What Michael Jackson, Beyonce And Jay Z Have In Common
http://www.forbes.com/sites/zackoma...ael-jackson-beyonce-and-jay-z-have-in-common/

Michael Jackson’s postmortem fortunes got another boost yesterday with the announcement that Epic Records will release Xscape, an album of all-new material by the King of Pop, on May 13th.

Xscape came together after Jackson’s estate granted Epic chief Antonio “L.A.” Reid unlimited access to the singer’s musical archives. Reid selected eight tracks on which Jackson had already recorded vocals and passed them along to a team of producers led by Timbaland, who then made additional sonic contributions. The result, according to Reid, is something worthy of Jackson’s legacy.

“Michael left behind some musical performances that we take great pride in presenting through the vision of music producers that he either worked directly with or expressed strong desire to work with,” said Reid in a statement. “We are extremely proud and honored to present this music to the world.”

“Michael was always on the cutting edge and was constantly reaching out to new producers, looking for new sounds,” added John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of Jackson’s estate. “He was always relevant and current. These tracks, in many ways, capture that spirit. We thank L.A. Reid for his vision.”

With the release strategy for Xscape–radio silence up until an announcement just six weeks before launch–Jackson also finds himself on the cutting edge of album rollout planning. The approach isn’t entirely different from the likes of Beyoncé and Jay Z.

True, those two superstars left even less time between the announcements and launches of their albums. For Jay Z, it was about three weeks; for Beyoncé, the events occurred simultaneously. But even Jackson’s six-week window is a short one compared to other recent releases by big acts like 50 Cent and Coldplay, both of whom announced their albums more than two months in advance.

Jackson’s former publicist, Susan Blond, remembers putting together album publicity campaigns that began three to four months before the King of Pop’s releases. For other artists releasing music from beyond the grave, the window is still wide: the estate of Johnny Cash first publicized the launch date of Out Among The Stars, released this month, in mid-December.

Of course, with a departed act, a short runway can be much easier to negotiate. There are no tours or publicity appearances to organize. And as with living acts, the advent of social media has rendered a lengthy leadup unnecessary. With over 70 million likes on Facebook, Jackson is as well equipped as any to spread the word.

“The only thing the record company needs to do is get the word out and the record will sell itself,” says veteran entertainment attorney Owen Sloane, who once represented the Jacksons. “Since social networking is the key to getting the word out, and that happens instantaneously today, long lead times are not necessary.”

Will other artists follow the lead of Beyoncé, Jay Z and, now, Jackson? A few have, most recently Kid Cudi and Skrillex, with mixed results. As one major label president recently said: “This kind of event is the territory for maybe 10 artists in the world.”

Even from beyond the grave, Jackson is clearly part of that group.

XSCAPE: Reviewing the reviews and analysing the clues regarding the new Michael Jackson album

I think this clears up how Chicago and SWLM are two different songs. Joe stated that he sings "Chicago" in SWLM, and Damien confirms this, but that alone isn't a reason why they are the same.

So Chicago is the last track on the first disc! Can't wait to hear these two.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Soo any speculations on what the 2 videos might be ? Unreleased videos ?

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Reading french reviews from Le Parisien & Le Figaro....somewhat different from the British reviewers.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

No. I've lightened up since I first found out and at the moment don't have a substantial problem with the album but six of the eight songs have been heard.

LNFSG - original demo leaked
SWLM - unleaked
Chicago - unleaked
APWNN - 2008 mix leaked (not that different from the original)
STRR - heard in some capacity
DYKWYCA - 2010 mix leaked (not that different from the original apparently)
BG - original recording leaked
Escape - 2002 mix leaked

Truthfully, there are only TWO songs on the whole compilation that have never been heard. Everything else has in some degree (remixed or original). I'm not complaining any at the moment, I'm just saying. And don't get technical and say "The demos are different!" Doesn't matter; we know what's going to happen. We know the lyrics. We know what Michael sings and how he songs it. Therefore, we've already heard it.

Again, I've lightened up so I'm not complaining. Just beig honest

lol. I liked this post cause it helped me remember what SLWM is lol

Le Figaro called DYKWYCA's chorus "embarrassing" considering the story we all know. Both mentioned that some songs are overproduced.

The good news in all this?....Even when he was alive, MJ never got good reviews. So keep up the trend!!!

Now that the British & French media got a preview of the album, when will the US?

I'm just afraid they will overuse "hees", "hoos", random beatboxing, chopping up stuff, etc. Like Teddy did with HT. When I heard the new Xscape snippet, I instantly thought of HT

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

I'm curious what the reviews would have said if they had heard the real original songs... Would they still think it's Off the Wall era?

And this is my problem with these releases: they are a conceptless bunch of everything thrown together, without clear logic, or dating, or indication where the song comes from. It shouldn't require "serious digging," - but it does. "Much too soon" on Michael was dated in 80s when in reality it was a HIStory session track... Now they think these songs are Off the Wall. For an iconic artist like Michael such utter confusion in the media reviews is embarrassing!

I wish they did one "work of last years" release in 2010, as was originally planned, and then made deluxe editions of MJ studio albums with extra tracks. Invincible could really benefit from being rediscovered together with fresh tracks like BG, APWNN, etc. - that are put in the context of the album. Ugh.

Work of last years release?

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Thanks for the interview with Mat Maitland, it's really interesting! I so love the fresh look of it all. Even though I love the BAD-Michael etc. as well, this is something new and different and I sooooooo love it! I think it really appeals to the younger generation and the media coverage is so good. Sony has definitely improved. ;D I think we're in for a big treat! :clapping::punk:

I translated the 2 articles..The le figaro journalist seemed to be an ass hole, he hates MJ so much it seems...

but it seemed that They are making listening Parties EveryWhere....Monday on UK and today in Paris...Where Next ?? :D

who'll care 'bout the remixes? As long as we'll get the untouched mixes everything will be fine:chillin:

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Don't you find it weird how they claim that they researched picked the best tracks but have come up with a lot of songs that have been released in some capacity which brings me to the idea that there are probably loads of songs but are not full songs so cannot be released as a proper song

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Honestly I like when Michael's beatboxing is utilized. It was never really prominent in his music and it's a nice touch. Of course don't overdo it but make it sound good.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

The estate has lots of unreleased material still but be honest! Would you want it all instead of letting and keeping Michael living on through his music.

i for one want them to continue for years to come .

my wish list is to eventually hear from the bottom of my heart, the Katrina song. The Xmas song . But I can wait.

Xmas song?

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Back in '94 Michael and a children's choir recorded the Christmas song from Home Alone for some reason :p it isn't a full song, so don't expect it to show up on an album.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Where can I hear snippets online on phone

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Do you think there'll be a 'proper' single or just downloads? And it would be released quite soon wouldn't it? I mean, if they want to promote the album, there should be some time between the single and the album release..

The whole world.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

I must say I'm really looking forward to the remixes. If they're made well they could hit radio stations and dancefloors all over the world and they would reach a wider audience (and generate more MJ fans ;) ).

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

I'm loving the confusion going on now :D It makes the suspense that much higher
