Xscape General Discussion

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Eee, I don't wanna make a review yet til' I have my pre-ordered album in my hands, even though I've practically heard all the songs, LOL. It's interesting and fun to read all your reviews! :D So many different tastes and gems that popped out to people more than others~

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

this can't be a coincident, compare the instrumental of price of fame with the contemporized version of a place with no name.... how has no one else stumbled on this????????

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Asks for a album with both Demos and NEW versions... still isn't satisfied Michael isn't here it will never be the same they can't exhume him and ask him to record new material they can only work with what was left live with it.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Woke up with Love never felt so good on the radio and they interviewed a member of the malibu forum here in Germany. Yeah finally.:wild:

What radio-station?

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

So quick question. I didn't realize that the Tricky version of Slave to the Rhythm wasn't different from the original demo. Makes sense. Is the Tricky version (or all 3 versions) on the deluxe edition of the album? If not is there a way I can get my hands on the Tricky version? I really enjoyed that one and would love to have it when the album comes out.

p.s. Oh by the way: Roger Friedman, don't you ever dare write an article about MJ's music, ever again, you bastard!

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

LOVE this album. Literally not a single song I don't like in terms of re-works. Blue Gangsta is incredible. Props to the Xscape team, I can't wait to see the world celebrating MJ more than they already are. This is just the start!

Yeah, they pulled it from it, or imitated it.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

'Loving You' is beautiful. I admit I teared up listening to Michael's vocals on that (and a few of the other tracks). He was just so unbelievably brilliant. Timbaland's remix is also very well done and worthy of being a single.

As for the remixes, a couple I liked, a couple were... meh, a couple I didn't like and a couple I hated. No biggie there. I'm just glad to have the historic recordings on the 2nd half of the disc.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Nope, it's Leave Me Alone

no ''well don't, just leave me alone'' haha, but compare the rhythm from the beats.. it is pretty awesome how they used his inspiration though.

Yes it's awesome, and when you compare Stargate's APWNN and London Symphonic Orchestra's Leave Me Alone you'll see where the inspiration might have come from.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

My initial impressions:

Love Never Felt So Good: The demo was never a favorite of mine, it's obviously the least finished song included on the album. So, in that sense I prefer both remixes over the original. I feel like it captures the spirit of the song.

Winner: Remix

Chicago: Things are a bit complicated here. The vocals on the remix are front and center, however there's this repeating sound that I find very annoying. It's the sound that opens the song and keeps repeating throughout, I found it distracting from first listen. The demo is more dark moody and fits the story that the song tells. I just wish that Michael's voice was mixed a tad louder.

Winner: Demo - but I can see myself listening to the remix on occasion for the louder vocals.

Loving You: I like what Timbaland did here, I think it's his best work on the album.

Winner: Tie. I can see listening to both versions regularly.

A Place With No Name: I feel like the remix completely destroys the intentions of the demo. Sure the remix distances itself from A Horse With No Name but replaces it with that Leave Me Alone riff instead...

Winner: Demo - I don't think I'll ever listen to the Stargate version ever again.

Slave To The Rhythm: The demo shocked me cause I didn't know that Timbaland took the epic intro from the demo. The demo sounds very much like a product of its time but has its own charm. It's easily my favorite version of the 3 we heard (4 if you count the one with that one Canadian :p )

Winner: Demo - I feel like I can finally enjoy this song.

Do You Know Where Your Children Are: I feel like Timbaland takes away the urgency that's in the song and makes the chorus sound very happy when it's supposed to be urgent. I love the demo but I feel like the 2010 remix captures the spirit of the song without ruining it, that was a very tasteful update.

Winner: Demo - the 2010 remix though is fantastic as well. I don't see myself listening to the Timbaland remix.

Blue Gangsta: I listened to the leak a gazillion times. The remix starts nicely almost acapella but it's downhill from there

Winner: Demo. I miss some of the western sounds from the leak we had though, in this early version they're replaced by a piano riff.

Xscape: I won't lie, the loud distorted "Darkchild" shoutout that seems to be taken from the quiet one from You Rock My World made me laugh on first listen. For the first time since (2002?) I can understand what Michael is saying without looking up the lyrics, I still remember listening to Xscape for the first time when it leaked. Kudos to Rodney for highlighting Michael's vocal performance on this song.

Winner:? Demo but I do like the remix.

Final Thoughts: Aside from Love Never Felt So Good, Loving You, Chicago and Xscape I'm sticking almost exclusively to the demos. Of those songs though I only prefer the remix of Love Never Felt So Good over the demo.

I'm very glad the estate decided to include the original demos so we can pick and choose based on our preference.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Okay DAfuq Blue Gangsta IS AWESOME!!! Can't stop listening

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

This is Daebak!

JEEP Commercial with *Love Never Felt So good* Mike's version...

I'm feeling it... I'm feeling the Love... :punk::clap::D

OMG that IS a real commercial!! Awesome.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

The more I listen the more I love them all. Some songs are growers not showers!

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

I think I'm going to review these in depth as well:

1. Love Never Felt So Good:

Winner: The Solo Remix

I've always loved the demo, but I felt that it lacked too much. The way they filled it out, and expanded it, is wonderful. And the version with Timberlake is an atrocity, as much as I like him, so I'm definitely going for the remix.

2. Chicago:

Winner: The Remix

This was hard, because I adore both. But as much as the demo has potential, it just lacks too much. The remix has a better grasp of what Michael was trying to do here.

3. Loving You:

Winner: Demo

I don't have to explain this. I love the remix, too, but the demo just screams "Bad era", and I adore the Bad era. It's like a second Liberian Girl.

4. A Place With No Name

Winner: Demo

I like the new version, but it seems they borrowed too much from Michael's past songs. The old version sounds like a new song, and they should have made that the finished version, instead of messing with it.

5. Slave To The Rhythm:

Winner: Demo

The remix may have more fleshed out, but the original is just so amazing. It really should have been on an album.

6. Do You Know Where Your Children Are:

Winner: Remix

They took a song, which sounded dated, and they made it modern. And they managed to keep the overall vibe. Excellent.

7. Blue Gangsta:

Winner: Demo

I like the remix. I really, really do. But it just seems to lack depth, compared to the original, which is just so many shades of awesome.

8. Xscape:

Winner: Remix

Rodney Jerkins remixed a masterpiece, and made it even more of a masterpiece. Let this song be a testament that, most of the time, if a producer has a vision on a song, they should be the one to remix it.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

As a hardcore fan of Michael's original creations, nothing will ever top the demo's for me.. especially Slave, Chicago, Do You Know & Loving You! they're purely sensational and gorgeous  but, as with any projects.. i have an open mind. I have been enjoying these new updated versions a lot, especially Loving you! Darkchild worked wonders with Xscape also.. overall, the album get's a 9.9/10 from me. *joking, it's 10/10 ;)

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

What I love about this album is that there is an honesty to it that was missing from the Michael album. And I'm not talking about the C.Tracks. It's the way that album tried to pass itself off as the album that michael was working on and was mixed using instructions he had left behind where as Xscape is basically people saying we were fans of michael and respected his art. This is what we did with some of the songs he left. And here is how he left them. We did the best we could and we hope you enjoy it. And what's more we are going to really promote it. For me that is all I can ask for and that is why I will support it 100%. Do I love ALL the tracks, no. Do I hate any of the tracks no. Am I glad that's it's been made, you betcha!

I understand, but you have to understand that sometimes remixes can be even better.

Genesis had their entire catalog remixed, with instruments added, instruments removed, and different sounds and feelings. I had a hard time listening to a lot of the new mixes, but I've learned to even like them better.

A lot of Michael's demos sound tinny, lacking instruments and depth. Sticking LA Reid and Timberland in a room with all of these demos was the best thing that could have ever happened to them. While I do like some of the demos better, as an album, the 8 remixes just work.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

And I also wanted to say...

They worked on about 30 songs, narrowed it down to 16, 8 made the cut.

Anyone want a sophmore album, anyone? I'd like another one just like this, please. :) But give it a few years.
