History could have been better

You're completely right. But as i said, it's not about MJ's hate for anyone. He deals with the hate he received.
Other ones would say "he was hurt by other people". I would say he had to deal with hate. The media was the most hateful of them all.

And smile, yes that's another topic.
I would have to disagree on most opinions which were stated in this thread. Smile to me is not a "happy song" & not the ONE bright spot on otherwise aggressive, dark & sad album.
To me smile is the saddest song of them all. Yes he says: "Smile though your heart is aching, even if it's breaking..." But the fact is, the heart is aching & breaking. "Smile and MAYBE tomorrow..."
Also the strings & whole arrangement are more sad & weary to me, then happy & up lifting..
The LaLaLa & whistling at the end - to me also more sad then anything else...

It's on "my first disc / Hate" , because it's reflects MJ's feelings after dealing with those allegations & this situation in general..

Interesting points, and I love the idea of a ying & yang type concept. I just couldn't group Smile with a bunch of songs under the title Hate. I think it's massively inaccurate. I wouldn't group it under the title love either. As I think it's more complex than that. Is it sad? Absolutely agree. The lyrics and vocal delivery say it all. It's despairing and heart wrenching, but in the end the LaLaLa's and whistling are hopeful and optimistic about the future. That moment when you've been through something extremely painful and are just beginning to slowly heal and find your way back.

That also brings me to the hardest part of the HIStory album for me:
Finishing the album with Susie & Smile.
That was really hard to digest. And even to this day, i don't enjoy listening to these 2 songs. Even though Susie is a Masterpeace & Smile is a great song too. Just to dark & sad to finish this album.
If the ending would have been Susie - Smile - History, that would have been a little better IMHO.
I was in a hole when the cd had played out...
And i came out that hole, by listening to the so called "dark songs" like This Time Around, Scream, They Don't Care.. or DS & Money. for me those are not dark songs, they are fight songs. And THAT was up lifting part to me - MJ was fighting, he guarded himself against those made up stories..
Best song on HIStory for me is Tabloid Junkie - that's a true masterpiece & a symphony of new & unexpected sounds (also like scream).
So many times MJ already had surprised me, with this song he did it again.
The verses, the chorus, the layering of the vocals, those insane beats, aaahhh goosebumps...

Completely out of place on HIStory was Come Together. But that's been mentioned already in here...

Yeah, I can understand where your coming from with regards Little Susie and Smile. They are quite heavy hearted and deep for sure, and HIStory has that uplifting, anthemic quality to it that would pretty much guarantee the listener is left feeling completely optimistic and satisfied. I think you've got a genuinely good point there, but at the same time,Little Susie and Smile are two incredibly rich and beautiful recordings that are some of MJ's most mature work. Chaplin's character in his film Modern Times was put through all types of indignities (being fed by a modern machine) and Smile is that optimism at the end of surviving the indignities that various facets of modern life can bring, so perhaps MJ was drawing on parallels and found it fitting and maybe even necessary to end the album that way. As jamba has stated above, MJ's life also drew many parallels to Chaplins. MJ was certainly relating to his hero and perhaps he found it ultimately worthy and perhaps fitting to end such a personal album in such a personal way.

Just jumping off the OP:

Artistically, HIStory probably would have been much better with the above set list. But commercially, it wouldn't have made much of a difference. People in 1995 weren't big fans of the whole "Michael is the victim" outlook, so including different songs with the same intent wouldn't have changed anything.

^ There is ONE anti-tabloid and ONE lost-childhood song on HIStory...

Touché. ;)

Maybe that wasn't the best way for me to put it - I think it's more the overall angry/serious/worthy 'vibe', y'know? Obviously, that's just peachy for a lot of folks, but I'm an old school funk/soul/disco fan so I do gravitate towards the more fancy-free, R&B-oriented earlier stuff. I love the more 'old school soul' sounding stuff on Invincible for similar reasons.

That's a personal perspective, though - there's still an awful lot of extremely well-crafted stuff on HIStory.

No,Little Susie is a very pretty song.I also like Stranger in Moscow,History,This time around,They don't care...,but for me the most beautiful song from this album is Earth Song.Generally speaking there are too many songs from this album and I think it's not good.

History is "not good"?

An album with:
Scream
Stranger In Moscow
Earth Song
TDCAU

Not to mention:
2 Bad
Smile
Money
Tabloid Junkie

Okay, go stick to your Miley Cyrus & Rhianna. Mature pop music isn't for you.

I read it as if there are too many songs on the album (like preferring a shorter album, less than 15 tracks) not about critisizing its quality. At least that's how I read her comment.

That's what I meant(I didn't know that someone would misunderstand me).I prefer shorter albums."History" has lots of great songs but there are a few weaker ones, too. But I still like this album and I don't understand people saying that Michael's last good album was Dangerous and that his best years were till the early nineties. His music was no longer so good after that. That's what some people say,and I don't agree with that.

^ I do prefer shorter albums as well, TBH - not because I have some perverse thing against having more music to listen to, but just because an album can much more easily 'run out of steam' as a whole listening experience otherwise (as Invincible does halfway through, for me).

I consider LP-length (8-11 track) albums to be optimal, really.

Sorry I misunderstood you :)

In this case I agree, If History was 3 tracks shorter it would possibly be as perfect as Dangerous.

I would make TTA, YANA B sides & lose Come Together as was already a B side to Remember The Time.

But many fans really like TTA & YANA was one of his biggest singles ever so what do I know?!?

Also the track History never really lived up to its true potential for me. So while I agree its a bit too long, the overall quality of the tracks is outstanding.

"Is it scary", "blood on the dancefloor" and Morphine should have replaced TTA, Money and "2bad".

I agree with you McNug. The original LP-length was pretty perfect, and aswell as an album losing steam, you can also have too much of a good thing. The original LP length of around 20 minutes per-side was perfection. It also gaged optimal attention span, which is about 40 minutes. After that, our minds do begin to wonder off. I do love the HIStory album though, and it packs quite a punch. I totally get the concept of 'less is more though.

Speaking as I have just come across this thread.
I think HIStory couldn't be any better then it is, I love all the songs. The songs very empowering and upbeat. If I could just have 2 albums on my Ipod it would be Bad and HIStory. I'll have to come back and add more later :D

lol album tracklisting does not mean anything about how well the album will sell.

He needed killer singles going into 1996 to sustain sales but the promotion front dwindled more or less during and after the single for They Don't Care About Us.

Well yeah i agree. Internationally he continued to do well into 1997. Going back onto the OP which said that sales would of been better with a better track listing, I still have to do disagree.

Earth Song was the Christmas #1 over here and MJ's biggest selling single EVER in the UK! You Are Not Alone was the first song to debut at #1 in Billboards Hot 100. During 97 MJ was touring Europe, this sustained the album in Europe surely. Touring is some of the best promotion you can have. MJ has been much bigger on this side of the world, much more than America for many years.

HIStory is Michael's best album, in my opinion. When I first started discovering his music; HIStory hit so many cords with me. It's so emotional, pained and packed full of so much of this angry energy that he clearly needed to let go of and you just feel him on this album in ways that none of his other albums did. Of course, the rest of his albums are masterpieces in their own right but this one was all him. Not one of these songs could have been given to another artist to sing, not one of these songs could have been done justice by anybody else. Each track told his story in some kind of way and I truly believe it is more autobiographical than his own book.

The 1-2-3 punch of "Scream", "They Don't Care About Us" and "Stranger In Moscow" is something that no one has ever topped before or after this album. It's the most amazing trio of songs to begin an album. "Scream" is one of my favorite Michael tracks, the loud and exciting production mixed with both MJ and Janet's angry, fierce vocals with these lyrics that just spoke to whoever was listening, plus that video! One of my favorite tracks ever. TDCAU, another one of Michael's signature tracks. The urgency of "SITUATION, AGGRAVATION, EVERYBODY ALLEGATION!", the blistering chorus, the impactful guitar solo. Then from the anger of the first two tracks to "Stranger In Moscow". First off, the contrast going from those tracks to this one is killer. "Stranger" has this production that screams loneliness. The introduction with only instrumental just leads you into this mood of isolation, but beauty. The echoes of the chorus, "How does it feel (how does it feel?), How does it feel?... when you're alone, and you're cold inside?" Haunting. Perfection. The ad-libs at the end I'M FEELING LONELY BAAAABE LIKE STRANGER IN MOSCOW! LORD I MUST SAY! (or whatever he's saying, lol! Jacksonese!)

"This Time Around" is underrated. This song should NOT be removed in my opinion and should have also been released in the US as a single because it was very R&B/hip-hop sounding but with Michael's flawless vocal. This is the first time you really hear Michael curse with a vengeance. "This time around, I'm taking NO SHIT!" The lyrics in this song are what really punch me right in the stomach. People like to say that a lot of this album is not relatable because it's too personal to him with that one theme of allegations and everything, but to me, all the tracks so far are relatable. I relate to this song because I've dealt with backstabbers; you could have been in a bad relationship with someone who was just using/abusing you, and you can relate to Michael's anger and pain that you feel throughout the song. I love the understated production, it gives a claustrophobic feel with the repeats of "He really thought, he really had a hold of me...(woah oh oh oh! woah oh oh oh oh!)" LOVE this track and couldn't go without it.

"Earth Song" is obviously one of Michael's most artistic and perfect tracks he's ever made. I don't really feel the need to indulge too much in it, because it seems for the most part everyone agrees this track is like MJ's magnum opus. SO, so far, we are 5 tracks into the album and I would say at least 3 of the tracks are some of Michael's most artistic and best songs to date (TDCAU, Stranger and Earth Song). Quite a feat for an album that a lot of people see as Michael's beginning downfall in music quality.

Now, to the controversial part of HIStory. "DS", "Money", and "Come Together". "D.S." is definitely one of Michael's worse tracks, lol. The chorus is cute but the verses are really not very good. This is the one track that I would delete from the album. Funnily enough, I feel more of his anger on the other tracks than on D.S. which is literally straight-forwardly about the accusations. "Money" is VERY underrated though. I love the spoken verses, the lyrics and the chants going into the very smooth, light choruses with the heavy lyrics. I don't see how anyone could want this song off the album either, it's actually very catchy. "Is that your alibi? I don't think so. You don't care. You do it for the money." YAS MJ!! "Come Together" is another GREAT track and the only reasons people wouldn't want it on the album is because it's a cover of a very popular track and because it was heard since the late 80s from Michael, even with a video, so I can see why it's inclusion was a confusion. I never heard it until I heard the album so I love it's placement. His vocals are HOT on it, damn. I could see why this would want to be removed though, in order for the album to be shorter or to include a newer track.

Now, I DO NOT understand any of the hate or the unwanting of these tracks on the album:
"Childhood"
"HIStory"
"Little Susie"
"Smile"

Just like the beginning of the album, it ends with some of his most artistic and flawless works. "Childhood" has this classical, soaring production matching with his pristine voice, I've never heard him sing with such passion and hitting those high notes like he's flying through the Heavens. That track is another one that literally goes through my veins, how a MJ fan could not like this song is baffling to me!! "HIStory" with it's kicking verses, light chorus, sampling of historical speeches, etc. OMG I just love the melodies in this one!! "Lord we need your assistance!" The huge chorus at the end with everyone singing and harmonizing together, "THE SOLDIER DIES! HER MOTHER CRIES! ALL NATIONS SING! LET'S HARMONIZE ALL AROUND THE WOOORLD!" Ugh. The emotion in this track kills me, it's literally an epic anthem. "Smile" is blissful. It was actually my favorite MJ track for a while. It encompasses what Michael Jackson was. Happiness, positivity, strength. Just like "Childhood", his vocals are like butter. Both this and Childhood have this classical vibe, as weird as this sounds I LOVE to watch the sunset and listen to these two tracks. Therapeutic definitely and NEEDS to stay on this album, artistic masterpieces.

"Little Susie"... don't even get me started. This is a haunting piece that, again, I think is up there with Michael's best. The melodies are beautiful but eerie, the story told is piercing to anyone with a soul, and is the OPPOSITE(!) of "pointless" or "needs to be off the album"... The violins and instrumentals all together with Michael's delicate vocals are just shiver inducing. I think what's scariest about this beauty of a track is that it almost tells the story of the final days of Michael's life. Nobody was taking care of him, nobody was watching over him to make sure he was being treated alright. In the book "Remember the Time", written by his bodyguards, they said that Michael had no friends. His children had birthday parties and nobody would come to celebrate with them. After he was acquitted, 50 out of 300 invited guests came. Neglect can kill like a knife. It hurts so much more to hear this track now that I feel it connects deeply to him after his death. "Everyone came to see the girl that now is dead", just like with Michael, they neglected him for years and then when he died suddenly everyone came around the woodworks. "but only the man from next door knew Little Susie oh he cried..." Another killer line because only Michael's true friends and family (that you can count on 2 hands), really knew him and really actually grieved unlike all the fake industry people. People please understand that this song is so important, the message is just so beyond true. emotional neglect can kill.

Ending on a more positive note: "You Are Not Alone", "Tabloid Junkie" and "2 Bad" are more of the commercial songs and I absolutely LOVE them. Especially Tabloid Junkie and 2 Bad. Those are some killer dance tracks. First off with Tabloid Junkie, the way he sings "YOU'RE PARASITIN', BLACK AND WHITE DO ANYTHING FOR NEWS!" And after the instrumental bridge, "WHY DO WE KEEP FOOLIN OURSELVES, BAYBAY! BAYBAY!" Whenever I dance to this or "2 Bad" it's a sweatathon. Flinging myself across the room trying to keep up with the anger and heavy beats.

As you can see, I LOVE this album and it holds some of his best work EVER. I would love for someone to challenge me saying that these are not some of his best songs of his career:

They Don't Care About Us
Stranger In Moscow
Earth Song
Childhood
HIStory
Little Susie
Smile

^^ Brilliant post!!

Love it and I think I may re-visit the whole album on the back of it.

If you see my post earlier on page 5 (almost the same size of yours!) you'll see we agree on almost everything.

Thanks a lot for this.

Wow--what a wonderful discussion of HIStory!! :) Fantastic!! I agree re Childhood and the vocal power and feeling in that song, and you are absolutely right about Little Suzie and how it foreshadows or predicts MJ's death. So true that 'neglection' can kill. I sometimes get a shiver thinking about how that songs fits--and you describe it perfectly. 'Somebody killed little Suzie (or little Michael) the girl (or the boy) with the tune.' Really enjoyed reading this--so true about the anger and the sheer energy of it.

Sum up:

It was HIS story not yours, he choosed the tracklist himself, and he sold the album! End of story :p ;P

HIStory is Michael's best album, in my opinion. When I first started discovering his music; HIStory hit so many cords with me.

Smile

That's 7 tracks that are artistic masterpieces. And then don't forget that every other track that I mentioned are amazing also, I was just pointing out the fact that those songs are songs that only Michael could write and they were GENIUS. This is his best album and I love it.
Awesome work and I pretty much agree with you although I still think from beginning to end that Dangerous is the better of the two but the early to mid 90's was MJ's artistic peak and to be fair there are few people who have ever matched MJ's work during this time.
One thing though. Smile is Chaplin's classic. MJ's vocals however are sublime.

To me, Little Susie is the worst MJ song recorded. Boring, bla. I don't care what message he was conveying. Awful. waste of space.
The album desperately needed at least one more upbeat song that wasn't about people he hated.
I mean, DS/Tabloid Junkie/and Money ALONE are way too many angry songs about his personal life, not including the awesome ones like TDCAU, Scream, and This Time Around.

Come Together is like the only fun song on the album.

Don't get me wrong. I love the whole album, but it would have benefitted from at least one fun song that wasn't a cover.
Little Susie showed Michael Jackson 's songwriting genius for me

Yes little susie was a bold new direction. HIStory is probably his most creative work, not his best but fascinating for sure. He should have made space for supersly sister, morphine, ghosts and is it scary imo

History could have been better if Morphine and In The Back were on the album, in place of Come Together and Smile.

History is meant to be Michael’s most personal album, it is supposed to be his musical autobiography. And given Michael’s reliance on prescription medication, especially painkillers and how he died, Morphine is probably Michael’s most personal song. It would make sense to include it on History. Also, it’s a banging song with great vocal delivery, instrumentations and lyrics. Sadly only the very few hardcore fans care about it, because it’s released on a remix album that hardly anyone has ever heard of.

In The Back even though it is like only 10% complete sounds amazing. The beat is sick and the potential that song had was amazing, in my opinion. It’s just a shame that Michael couldn’t complete it and release it on History.

Both Morphine and In The Back would elevate History to another level, in my opinion. I feel that History is let down by songs like Come Together and Smile. Still a brilliant album, but could have been better.

It perhaps could have been more commercially successful with a change in the tracklist, but I don't it would have been as personal or interesting

I will say some of my favourite songs from Michael were released on Blood On The Dance Floor, so best of both worlds I guess

The only way that HIStory would have been better in my opinion is swapping out Come Together for Someone Put Your Hand Out, I cant help but always feel CT always seem out of place, think its because I know the track recorded 6/7 years prior.

Someone Put Your Hand out suits the flow of the album better, lyrics tie in with many of the HIStory struggles and would have felt more current.

Aside from that, the album is perfect

SCREAM
TDCAU
STRANGER IN MOSCOW
MORPHINE
EARTH SONG
BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR
MONEY
THIS TIME AROUND
YOU ARE NOT ALONE
CHILDHOOD
TABLOID JUNKIE
IS IT SCARY
2 BAD
HISTORY
SMILE

Had “in the back” been more complete I would put it in the place of “this time around”

It was a bit of a problem for the last 2 studio albums where some of the tracks that didn't end up in the albums were actually more impressive than several that did make the album.
I think Scream was also a bad choice for lead single. While a good track for me it lacks a hook, a memorable beat or chorus. I would have picked Money as it was a perfect statement after the allegations or Tabloid Junkie well for the same reasons.

I don't know if morphine, ghosts and is it scary were finished in 1995 but I would even argue those 3 songs were good enough reasons to even delay the HIStory album until they were fully finished!
