Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary - Estate Announcement Page 66

You quoted my post twice on page 76...I'm assuming you didn't mean to because your responses are weird and don't apply to what I said...

Truth, the doc isn't gonna make any money at all.

That's clearly not true. Just selling rights to various TV stations will make good money. Re-release of the album will be just some extra money on the side. That's why they didn't add anything to it. Their expenses for this release are very low, so the profit will be even bigger even if the release does not sell well. Bad 25 sold poorly but they had much bigger expenses with re-release, documentary, live CD & DVD, restoration of seriously damaged old VHS, remixes by some of the biggest DJs, Pitbull guest appearance, remastering the original album and the demos...

Just as I thought. It's £21 on UK Amazon. Asking fans to pay that price tag just for a documentary is disgusting.

To me that seems like a very fair price. - In Denmark a new Blu-Ray often cost £20 - so to get both tha album and the new Spike Lee doc for just £21 does not seem like much at all IMO - not in Denmark anyway... I will buy for sure. I am looking very much forward to the doc by Spike Lee. - I bought the BAD25 doc too - and though I would have liked subtitles and extra material - I really enjoy the doc, it was worth every penny - and I am sure OTW-doc will be great too!

People who wants it and can afford it, buy it without complaints.

I will buy no doubt, and only if the Spike Lee doc is really bad (which I doubt very much!) I will complain! I am looking forward to recieving the doc on Blu-Ray.

Those people are being exploited too. Whether they realise it or not.

Wow. - This is just one of those awful, very very stupid comments I try not to reply to, but this time I will.
How on earth can you say people gets exploited? They do have brains you know, right? They can make decisions themselves, I hope you realise that..? They can decide for themselves whether or not they think it's worth the money... If they think the price is fair for a fantastic album and a great doc by Spike Lee about a very intresting period in MJ's life - then they will buy it... If they think it's too expensive for an album they already have and a new doc - they will not buy... Easy as that !! People earn their own money and can decide for themselves what they think is fair. so don't say they are just too stupid to realise they are being exploited...

for those of you, who are interested in buying...

#MichaelJackson ❤️❤️Off the wall package PreOrder here now >>>http://www.shopmichaeljackson.com

Thanks very much !! :)

I will pre-order straight away. Can't wait to add this to my collection! :)

Hope the doc is good.

Very disappointed about the total absent of new material or even some extra material on the Blu-Ray... Sad. Had hoped for a concert too, but that was maybe asking too much. - But why they do not add some demoes and extended versions are beyond me... Stupid decision IMO.
I really really hope Dangerous25 will be more like BAD25 - and a new concert released, NOT Bucharest... - And on Blu-Ray !!

From 10 projects deal between Estate and Sony so far we got 7. So there is 3 more projects coming in just little less than 2 years. It will be interesting 2 years for MJ fans! I guess Thriller 3D for Halloween 2016. Then HIStory Tour in spring of 2017 and to finish it with a bang, a brand new studio/posthumous album with all new previously unreleased recordings similar to Xscape. That is my realistic wishlist. I won't post my unrealistic wishlist like some because I know what is realistic and what isn't.

1. This Is It soundtrack (2009)
2. Vision (2010)
3. MICHAEL (2010)
4. Immortal soundtrack (2011)
5. Bad 25 with Spike Lee's documentary (2012)
6. Xscape (2014)
7. Off The Wall re-release with Spike Lee's documentary (2016)
8. ??? Thriller 3D ??? (201?)
9. ??? HIStory World Tour ??? (201?)
10. ??? Xscape Part II ??? (201?)

^ This is sorta off topic, but I'd like to see Bad tour on HD before they wrap up :(

For me its easy, torrent the doc, watch then delete - Job done........ I now have no interest in anything post Michael, why I hear you say, well for one very huge reason - he is not here to be involved in it, never will a bunch of suits and lawyers replace or even try to transcend the talent Michael possessed when giving us and the world his master pieces.

I would guess that the vast majority of posts on here, for a good few years now, talk about issues post Michael's tragic death. A good proportion of these posts will be about products released by The Estate. I would also guess that this site would be just about dead now, without the post 2009 projects. It seems odd, knowing your current attitude, that you bother to keep the site going.

I'm glad you do, by the way. In the same way that I am glad The Estate keep giving fans something to talk about and look forward to, with regular releases.

Be careful what you wish for, Gaz.

Xscape part 2? BIG no! Thriller 3d HELL yea! & history.... im not too sure. Smh i wish they would be creative & do something new! It's the same method for every project instead of starting from scratch. Same fan made looking videos with random ppl just imitating mj. We always expect demos & unreleased music & it has got to the point where we want a spike doc for every album now. Something needs to give. We need a new format!

I think everyone here would like to see that :D. But I think it's highly unrealistic. Maybe under the new contract if they find the film reels.

OnirMJ, thank you for this list. It is sobering in my view.

After review, it seems Sony has most likely already seen the return on their investment in the Estate/Sony partnership with AEG's TII and Cirque’s Immortal ventures. Several of the offerings - and most likely the remaining offerings - were safe, lukewarm, and characteristically lazy with low expenses in return for safe, guaranteed, low profit margin, but, profit nonetheless. I dare say some of these offerings should not have seen profit but, they most likely did because MJ fans continue to support even when disrespected.

The future looks bleak. I truly wanted an ultimate live collection that spanned Michael’s full career. I will have to continue with my makeshift live collection. OTW had a chance to show Michael as a well rounded artist where Bad25 failed. Without a restored, pristine quality live DVD with accompanying CD, the opportunity continues to be missed. In these years, Estate/Sony stubbornly refused to employ someone(s) who could assist them with developing quality product offerings and it shows.

Tis interesting and unfortunate that the posthumous products I treasure most are not on this listing....

Adding: ...minus the two Lee documentaries. I am sure I will enjoy the OTW documentary as I trust Lee as a documentarian.

I still think MJ ONE IN VEGAS IS A SEPARATE PROJECT... THERE IS NO SOUNDTRACK FOR IT...

It is separate project from Immortal. But still Estate/Cirque collaboration. Nothing to do with Sony Music other than music licensing. So MJ ONE is not one of the 10 Estate/Sony projects.

I've felt the same way since he died. I haven't purchased one thing that was released post 09. Downloaded sure, but in my opinion, no one can put out new MJ product but MJ in my opinion, so I just never bothered. And to be honest, for me, it's been the fans that have kept MJ's Legacy going. I have received more rad stuff from the community and 2000 Watts than anything from the Estate combined, so I'm a happy kid either way :)

I'm pretty sure I don't need to point out Michael's sole legacy is not about the estate and what they release, he gave me decades of activities to cherish and love prior to them which is where my fandom is and my tribute that being MJJC and it's continuation lies, I for one am not sitting here thanking the estate for giving MJJC traffic on the contrary my friend.

Apologies, I forgot to say three Lee documentaries. It would be nonsensical to prevent Lee from completing the Jones/Jackson trilogy. Thriller deserves to be documented appropriately.

This would leave two projects remaining for Estate/Sony.

You guys know that the estate will continue stuff after those supposed finite # of projects is done, right? Or if not them, another company with similar interests.

I'm afraid I'm with you in this-I've bought precious little since his death-I did listen to some of Xscape on YouTube and Spotify-and even though I liked some of it, I kept thinking it was missing something. And a lot later, I realized I was missing the special unexpected touches of music that Michael would add to his songs. The new songs are just flat out missing Michael-They're definitely not the same.

Isn't TII the movie one of the projects? And where is Dangerous? I thought that was 98% of the fan base's favorite album.

Looking at your list, I have bought more since 2009 than I thought-but everything had Michael's involvement. I bought Vision because I thought it would be a nice way to have all the short films together-but I haven't watched it yet. I still watch my old ones. I bought the Wembley show-and I just bought Spike's BAD 25 doc. I went to Immortal-does that count? Main reason I approved of the Cirque shows is that they used HIS voice, his image, his band-and I loved Immortal. I've heard MJ One is even better.

I personally hope they don't waste the money on a Thriller 3D-I'd much rather them just run Thriller itself in the cinemas as a short before a movie around Halloween.

^ Nothing the Estate does can be compared to projects Michael himself was involved in from production to release.

However, I do understand the vital role the Estate needs to play in preserving his legacy and introducing Michael to new audiences/generations. That is needed to preserve his legacy for years to come. His existing fans already know the A-Z of Michael, his genius and are picky - because we don't need confirmation of any of that. There are loads of younger people, however, who don't really know much about Michael or his music.

While what the Estate has done so far and continue to do is debatable, and they probably had more misses than hits, it is most likely because they have to focus on these two segments - existing fans and potential fans.

So if some of their projects don't appeal to existing fans, but helps bring in new fans, so what?

If, however, they fail to do both, then they have a problem.

Probably shouldn't be trying to bring in new fans by offering them chalk :baby:

But that only keeps MJ's legacy alive within an ever diminishing group of current fans.

I believe Michael's talent, love, and legacy, needs to be introduced and cemented to future generations of music fans.

Projects put out since Michael's passing will never reach the high standards he set. But, as long as they are done in the right spirit - which I believe they are - and they remind people of his creative genius, and get them thinking about his catalogue of work - which I believe they do - then I will support them.

I want to share Michael's genius to the world, not hide it within an ever diminishing pre 2009 community. I think MJ would want that as well.

Exactly. Couldn't agree more.

Um what do you mean?

I think Tinny is referring to the 'promotional / marketing' aspect of the new OTW/ Doc. packaging, which includes chalk and a chalkboard. Whereas I think established fans want 'cheese and a cheeseboard'...ie the 'longer established fans' are probably more difficult to market to, because we have as many likes / dislikes and preferences as there are varieties of cheese......

Isn't TII the movie one of the projects?

No, Michael Jackson's This Is It was distributed by Columbia Pictures. Only Michael Jackson's This Is It (album) was released by Epic as part of the 10 projects deal between MJ's Estate and Sony.

And where is Dangerous? I thought that was 98% of the fan base's favorite album.

I would love that to happen but I think it's highly unlikely. Yes, it is fan's favourite but it's not that popular outside the fanbase and it's not among critics' favourite. And judging by Bad 25 sales I doubt they will have the courage to release another anniversary album. Maybe Thriller because that will sell, but not Dangerous or any '90s album. That's just reality. You'll all see Dangerous 25 won't happen.

What we need for that kind of releases is collectors label under Sony Music, as I said multiple times already.
