Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary - Estate Announcement Page 66

^^Totally agreed mate! I think there was a thread on who was the most talented Jacksons and Jackie was near the bottem, but in reality he should have be placed near the top, his songwriting top class from songs like "Your Ways" to "Touture", for me he was the second best in terms of songwriting out of the Jacksons clan.

exactly

that's what's so sad, after all these years, when people say they represent and know the facts, the truth says something altogether different

it says right there between the album sleeves when OTW was originally released in 1979, it shows that Randy Jackson helped developed the rhythm arrangement for a number of Michael's songs on the album......that information has been there from day one

AND he co-wrote Shake Your Body Down to the Ground with Michael, which stands as one of the greatest records ever made during the age of disco

Randy was a first rate musician and keyboardist and we are sitting around like the brothers meant nothing

we need to get down to the grit and gravy about all of this because the brothers have been overlooked for agees

many fans do not know that it was Marlon Jackson who helped developed the dance routines the brothers performed during those group tours, especially during the Triumph Tour w/Michael

and Jackie Jackson who was always working out then made sure the group stayed in tip top shape during that tour

if anyone has the OTW album or CD, or google it, it will show Randy's contribution to that album which still stands and always stands as the quintessential r&b/soul album of all time

there's never gonna be a release of the Triumph Tour, but if there ever was, it will show crystal clear just how much the brothers contributed to this entire experience

and even as Michael did solo tours, which his career deserved, there's no way those background dancers did a better job than his brothers did, the brothers hit those dance steps and can still hit it in their sleep

during the 2001 MSG concerts when NSYNC came on stage, and they are supposed to be the young guys, they couldn't even keep up, Marlon Jackson poppin up in the air from his knees on the ground w/out breaking stride
:clapping: awesome post. they definitely deserve more credit than they get

^I agree with you on the concert quality, but absolutely disagree with you on the brothers contributions. Did you not watch the doucmentary at all? Randy was responsible for SYBDTTG.
I finally got the computer to work and saw it tonight-then replayed it because something got to me in the middle and started crying.
But I loved it-loved it-loved it-so many, many things that's why I had to watch it over again immediately-and I am just flat out thrilled that Jackie and Marlon were in this-that clip at the LA forum talking about asking Quincy to produce his album-I had never seen before-and watch Marlon grin while he's telling the story-the pride, admiration, the joy that they have for Michael and those songs that they ALL did-or even with Michael's solo work-

Later on, yes-Victory I would say that they were more or less the backup-maybe if Jackie had been in the show, I'd say different-because a lot of those choreographies for WDAN and Beat It-You can tell there's supposed to be another singer/dancer on the other side of Michael-and so it seems to be lacking-but NOT at this time-they had come of age, and were showing the world what they had all learned. some of their interviews were the best part of this doc-they have the same appreciation for those collaborators that helped them achieve what they were meant to do, that Michael did-I'm proud of them. This doc also showcased what made them all so great together-that roar of the audiences had me beaming.

And I loved the interview in 76 at Hayvenhurst that I don't remember seeing before-surely I have-but if a boy had told me his favorite songwriters were Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin-I would have asked him to marry me immediately.

I really love Michael.
And I thank you Spike.

Can I watch this anywhere please? Ive spent nearly 3 hours looking for some sort of link online lol :bugeyed:rofl:

I cant wait till the 26th release and even then it will be released only in the US at the time being, I'm in the UK btw.

I really hope someone can provide a link to download. The links posted on page 167 have been taken down..... :-(((((

I think yes. One of the reasons is that MJ has his say in it - ie. it was a very good idea IMO that Spike took audio from interviews with MJ at the time and had it playing over some of footage. That way he let MJ talk about his artistry - something that was missing from Bad 25.
I loved in particular the one from Hayvenhurst-mainly because I don't remember seeing it before-and I expected a lot more of the Sylvia Chase one instead-but in defense for the Bad25 doc, Michael only gave two interviews at the time of BAD-the Ebony one and the Molly Meldrun one in Australia, and I think Spike used both.

Another thing I just loved and had me grinning ear to ear-was the shots of the audience at the Destiny/Triumph Tours-everybody smiling, dancing-ecstatic.

Was there ever any doubt Spike would do Michael justice and make him proud? Not where I come from anyhow :D

LOL @ the She's out of my life comment. I think it's pretty safe to assume that Spike will do the Thriller documentary as well.
.

OMG that would be so cool if he does !! :wild:

That was great! Especially Rock With You. "I wanna rock it, rock it, rock it!!" :girl_happy:
Also, It sounds like he's saying, "I wanna put em in my the pocket." @2 :16.

And from the beginning of Don't Stop.... to about 2 minutes in is just pure fire!
Sweat flying off of him when he spins @ 45 secs.
Then, when he slowly lifts his leg up and slowly raise his pants leg....one at a time. Whew!
And that foot work..... uh-may-zing!
Hahahaa! I love it! Michael is something else!
I really enjoyed the documentary. Learned a few things too. I'm gonna watch it again in a little while.

Thank you for the clip Respect. :)

This is worth another quote!!!!:woohoo::jumpcrazy::dropdead::stretcher

I totally agree! Lol!

Spoiler alert-I glanced down and this "baby picture of Michael" is really Katherine holding Taj. I guess they fooled poor Spike
but how did he get that picture? who gave it to him, or did he find it somewhere? I mean, both Katherine and Joseph were in it, shouldn't they have known it wasn't Michael? did they think it was him? why would they fool Spike? it was also kinda random showing that picture. Katherine talks about Michael when he was 2-3 years old, and then they show this picture of a baby that's clearly nowhere 2-3 years old. and even if it was Michael, there's pictures of him as a toddler they could have used instead. the whole thing is just weird

What I think was priceless about this docu as it relates to the brothers, was that it showed them with there was absolutely no jealousy in their hearts towards MJ and that they all effectively worked together and gave an ingredient for the recipe.

I can't get enough of this doc! I've watched it 4 times already (since I got off from work last night). I haven't watched the BAD25 doc this much and I OWN IT. It's collecting dust somewhere in my apartment, just like This Is It (for shame, I know, lol!)

Off The Wall means so much to me on so many levels, though. I can't explain it! My fellow J5-era fans can relate, know what I mean. :girl_dance:

After a long day at work, I came home, heated up the dinner my parents made earlier, sat down in front of the Playstation 4 and watched Spike Lee dive into my favourite solo artist once more.

I'll be straight up. I've never really been THAT huge into Michael's Motown era, I own this 3 disc compilation of his Motown stuff (which I've reworked into The Definitive Collection compilation on iTunes, with a few tracks switched around), I own The Essential The Jacksons, The Jacksons Live and that's good enough for me. Most of my information from this era had come from various books I had read years ago, notably Jermaine Jackson's book. Did I love OTW? Of course! Was it my favourite album? Nope, it was probably my 4th favourite MJ album but GOD I can't get enough of the opening four tracks. This documentary pretty much skyrocketed my appreciation for this era.

Now I admit, it's probably going to stay at #4 (Dangerous, Bad, Thriller, OTW in that order) and I do hope to check out The Jacksons discography more on Spotify at some point... but what I really loved about this documentary was that it reminded me of the under-appreciated genius that Michael was. I literally paused the doco at one point and I ended up ranting to my best friend (who's also a giant MJ fan) for a solid 10 minutes about that . As I sat watching this documentary, I actually wanted it to end quickly so I could hurry up, flip open my laptop, jump onto iTunes and play the record already!

Would I say it's better than Bad 25? I don't know, I want to actually rewatch that now so I might. I think I might like Bad 25 more simply because it's got so much behind the scenes footage and as a filmmaker, I'm really into that stuff. I've always followed Michael's advice "study the greats and become greater" and I've spent god knows how many hours just watching b-rolls and watching behind the scenes, reading up on the greats and applying their advice, works and philosophy to whatever work I'm a part of. In saying that though, I really appreciate how this reopened my eyes and made me further appreciate Michael's development as an artist and just this whole era in general.

I honestly can't wait for Spike Lee to work on the Thriller edition of this documentary series. In fact, I think I want him to work on every era as he seems to really "get" Michael. As the film was finishing up, I was thinking about how amazing it would be if, in a decade or so time, we had a complete documentary series of Michael's life. The Beatles have this amazing series called The Beatles Anthology that came out in the 1990s, it's a ten part documentary series that goes into incredible depth on their career as a group and it's honestly THE best source to learn about them. This series by Spike Lee very much reminds me of The Beatles Anthology and I would love if someday Michael had something similar in his calibre. I'm f*cking over all these bullshit "docos" about his nose, his death or his skin colour or whatever. I'd honestly rather watch paint dry. THIS is the kind of film we need. Just like Michael did with Thriller and the Making of Thriller, they should be distributing this worldwide to TV Stations for a low cost to encourage them all to play this and Bad 25. I also wouldn't be against them renaming this doco in the future, the title is admittedly pretty awkward to say.

I admit I'm not going to buy the Blu-ray. Mainly because there's no extra audio tracks and I don't see myself watching this doco more than once or twice (I haven't watched Bad 25 since 2013, though I hope to again in a few days to compare it to this doco), but I still found it to be a great documentary that enhanced my appreciation for Michael Jackson. I look forward very much to the hopeful Thriller sequel, and especially Dangerous if it could ever come. Oh god just gimme all the eras!!!!! I look forward to rewatching Bad 25 sometime this week!

If you guys don't mind, I'm gonna blast some 70s MJ now :)

Finally watched it and man, it was so great!! Really well done - well put together, interesting, great archival footage and audio of our beautiful young Michael! :D I was afraid I'd be let down because of the lack of 'new' stuff in it, but it didn't matter - I loved it! It was all about the music, so it can't go wrong. And that live footage was AMAZING as well, I really really want that Triumph tour release now!

This part tho, I love Siedah:lol:

I think if it does that it accomplished its goals.

One little thing I think it could have maybe focused more on the other tracks on Destiny (only Shake Your Body and Blame It on the Boogie were mentioned) because despite of those being the big hits of the album to me it's not actually a party album - or not only. I always viewed it as one of the most self-revealing, most personal albums of MJ until Dangerous. When you listen carefully to the lyrics of songs like Things I Do for You (one of the underrated gems IMO), Bless His Soul, That's What You Get for Being Polite, Destiny, Push Me Away - they are very soul baring. I know there wasn't so much time here to talk about everything in-depth, but it could have at least mentioned that aspect.

But I am not complaining, it's no biggy, overall this is a great documentary bringing attention to what people should pay attention to regarding Michael.

Lil- That was one part of the docu that made me laugh. Thanks for those GIFS. :D

Sheila-Yes, those are prize GIFS you posted.

Here is one thats a little clearer of the one I really like. :D

^Surely that's not sweat? :bugeyed

That would be... a lot of sweat (not that I'm an expert or anything). I know Michael was quite the theatrical guy so maybe he wetted his hair right before the performance so that when he spun, it shot out more water than normal? Ya know, for exaggerated effect?

Or maybe it is just a lot of sweat... who knows? :p

I am usually finicky, but I definitely wouldn't mind getting showered in Michael's sweat. I'd never bathe again too lol

I don't think it's fake sweat. When you look at the other concert footage of the doc MJ is pretty much covered in sweat everywhere - his face, his neck, his hand. I also remember to have read once he was pretty sweaty.
