Michael Jackson’s Thriller 3D

Recent John landis quotes extracted just to take a look: underlined the part that gets raises my ears..

“I am so happy to have had the chance not only to restore but enhance Michael Jackson’s Thriller. We took full advantage of the remarkable advances in technology to add new dimensions to both the visual and the audio bringing it to a whole new level. Even though Thriller was shot traditionally, I was able to use the 3-D creatively. Let me just warn you, there is a rather shocking surprise in there.”

“I’d been trying to get to the negative for a long time as the new digital technologies are amazing at restoring films. And Michael and I always intended for people to see Thriller in a movie theater.”

Re: Michael Jackson's Thriller 3D to Premiere at Venice Film Festival

Not trying to be a smart @ss.. is there a reason we split this into a new thread?

Someone not following the other thread would miss the official announcement i guess.

Re: John Landis - Top Secret Thriller Project!!!! Coming 2017

Yes finally a new thread about the news.

looking Forward to the further announcemets:

John Branca, co-executor of the estate of Michael Jackson, describes the restored and enhanced Thriller as “authentic, visceral and still impactful. When you see it in a theater on the big screen with a theater-level sound system, it’s pretty unbelievable,” he adds. “Michael was going to use 3D elements on the This Is It tour, so this is something Michael would have done. He would love this.”

Branca and fellow Jackson estate co-executor John McClain will join Landis when Michael Jackson’s Thriller 3D is screened at the Venice Film Festival along with the original Making of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. It was Branca, Jackson’s then-attorney, who negotiated the history-making deal between MTV and Showtime for this first of its kind documentary, which helped offset the cost of filming Thriller.

According to Branca, more news and events tied to Michael Jackson’s Thriller 3D will be announced in the coming weeks. Thriller remains the only music video to be inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

Re: Michael Jackson's Thriller 3D to Premiere at Venice Film Festival

It may not be possible for some of them like Billie Jean. Even if shot on film originally, I remember reading that visual effects for Billie Jean were mixed / created on a lower-resolution film, making an HD or 4K conversion impossible.

Some of his earlier films won't be (OTW era was shot on tape - that's standard definition). Billie Jean was shot on 16mm, later edited on tape so any restoration will be welcome. From then on he mostly shot his films in 35mm (and edited them on tape for financial reasons - a common tactic especially for music videos) which is great, but to get HD quality they'll have to go back to the original negatives like they did for Thriller 3D. Later films that utilize CGI will need to have their visual effects redone as they were likely produced in SD, given their original destination at the time.

Sounds exciting, looking forward to it. Wonder what the shocking surprise will be??

Re: John Landis - Top Secret Thriller Project!!!! Coming 2017

cool. cant wait. i dont even own a 3DTV lol so i dont know if i can actually own a 3D thriller video unless they release it in blu ray or 4k also.

what could this shocking surprise be? could Michael have already been part of the actual filming for Thriller 3D for This is It and they found a way to fit it in??

Just a thought, not trying to start rumors

They mentioned Thriller 3D on the Today Show this morning. They said nothing new but did mention about the shocking surprise. Gonna be hard waiting to find out what it is. Maybe something else will leek out about it. lol

Re: John Landis - Top Secret Thriller Project!!!! Coming 2017

Guys please dont get your hopes up...

This time I'm glad we did. ?

Although I think that Thriller is getting more attention than other albums in MJ's career I'm totally glad to learn that Thriller got a Dolby Atmos treatment. I hope it also got a Dolby Vision treatment too.

I own an Atmos setup at home and I can't wait to enjoy it here!

I've seen it in theaters, put simple it's a lot of speakers - way more than the standard 5.1/7.1 you're used to. I'm talking like 22+ speakers, the positions and speakers of which are uniquely designed to give you an incredibly immersive experience when properly set up. Essentially a 360° experience - like if a helicopter flies overhead in the film it literally feels like it's flying overheard in a proper setup.

I once read some theaters had 22 speakers set up, but that was a while ago when it was being introduced so some places might have even more now. That I'm not sure.

It's not as crazy in home, but there's still lots of speakers - similar with the overheard situation.

I just hope they will also make a version that's not 3D.

Most people don't care for 3D - and very few have a 3D TV at home.

So I hope we get The making of Thriller in 4K with great sound - and Thriller music video in best possible quality in both normal and 3D versions.

Of course they will. It would be really stupid not to release a normal version too. Movies are released on both so I'm sure this will be too. Creature from the Black Lagoon has the normal and 3D version on the same disc.

Michael Jackson's ‘Thriller’ short film making headlines 34 years after its premiere. #Thriller3D

and the build up with "shocking surprise" tag raises the bar in expectations around the world!

I wonder if they will re-film any scenes? If so, the Palace theater in DTLA really needs some work. Should be fun to watch!

I'm ready to buy the standard blu ray, 3D, 4K, DVD etc. I'm gonna buy them all no matter what, Thriller in HD is gold and this will be a collectors item for sure.

Let's start guessing what the shocking surprise will be!

1. Alternative ending? (in this case, what would you expect?)

2. Alternative vocals of Michael?

3. Alternative vocals of Vincent Price?

4. An added scene of the dance routine, never published and used before?

Didn't they say it hadn't been recut or reedited?
That would rule out 1 and 4.

I hope the Blu-Ray release will include the original version in HD too with no new edits. A new version would be fine if they include the original.

I must have missed that motion ;) In that case we could rule out nr. 2 and 3 as well because I'd say that adding vocals would mean reediting.

What else could be shocking? Hmm, could it be connected to a recertification of Thriller's sales maybe?
