How Many Unreleased Songs are Complete Enough for a Release?

Their main investment is the distribution of the albums and songs that made MJ a star, they get a lot of revenues from his old classics.
Unlike what many fans have been falsely believing, NEW material is not what generates large sums of money.

Exactly. New posthumous albums will sell well in the short run but they will be forgotten eventually. In the long run, most of the money will come from albums such as Thriller, Numbers Ones & Essential and to a certain extent, Bad & Off The Wall. The Estate are better off promoting MJ's already released material, if they want to make more money.

Please don’t give them anymore awful ideas like this😂

I cannot for the life of me remember where I heard this, but someone once told me they had gone to an Estate-funded fan event (likely for either Bad 25 or Xscape) and John Branca had said they were looking to reissue This Is It with new footage to commemorate the 10 year anniversary. Take that with a grain of salt, but I would absolutely love that. I'm impatiently waiting to see the footage from "Dangerous" and "Stranger in Moscow".

Sadly, the likelihood of a new album this or next year is very slim. There's no substantial source of revenue there. Michael's pre-existing catalog has always and will always be the Estate's main source of income (though I have noticed there is always a spike in sales for past albums every time the Estate releases something new, so it could be spun to say that new projects help push the general population towards the old music). On top of that, Branca acknowledged that the estate would be moving away from unreleased music for the foreseeable future, which I'd wager stretches at the very least into 2020 and likely further. Unless something leaks, I'd imagine we won't see anything new for a long time.

I will forever advocate an Ultimate Collection type box set with previously released music, demo recordings, unreleased music, and Michael's instrumental pieces (because what else are they gonna do with those?) though.

I personally think a “duets” album featuring others artists with unreleased songs that are not entirely finished would also make for a good idea. I can see it selling quite well.

We’ll get more rehashes which are “innovative” and “reach new fans”. As for This Is It, it would be the same cleverly edited work the original was, which all became quickly unraveled with both the Murray and Katherine trials. Let’s be real, they probably used most of if not all the best footage in the original as they were clearly pushing an agenda. Why would they hold any good MJ footage back? They needed to show he was healthy enough to do the shows. Let’s not forget Mr Ortega and AEG met the same weekend MJ died to come up with a plan.

We need a collectors label but the Estate won’t do it because they probably don’t have the content. We’ll have to wait for LaVelle and MJ whatever fan page to leak/sell whatever they have got. The Wembley film reels are all but lost, and even if they did find them could we trust the release would be handled well?

Unreleased music doesn’t necessarily mean entirely new compositions to me. I’d love to hear HIStory demo’s. Did he ever record a different verse for They Don’t Care About Us? Let’s hear it! Even if it’s only a single line change in a random song, it’s still awesome for me to hear. This year is probably Thriller and Ghosts 3D (wonder if they will butcher the soundtrack to that one too?!) so I guess it’s just next year we’ll have to wait and see.

There is a TDCAU from 1989, or even earlier :)

I just hope very much, that when Thriller and Ghosts 3D is released on Blu-Ray/4K there will also be a 2D version - maybe with the original music.

3D is just annoying IMO. - It adds nothing, but takes focus and looks odd... - Hope for a 2D version in the new 4K quality - and great sound.

They absolutely butchered Thriller for the 3D remake from all accounts.

Agreed. I'm not really a 3D fan, myself.

Not from all accounts. Not at all, really, from what I saw and heard.

Really?? How? with the 3D or the music? - or both?

I haven't seen it (like most people..) but those in here who saw it and wrote about it in the Thriller 3D thread - I remember people being mostly positive? or do I remember wrong?

I really don't hope they changed anything to the worse... - Why would the even wanna change a thing - it's a legendary masterpiece as it is...

In the UK - Yes, they did. The content itself? No. It's absolutely incredible. I've never seen anything better. They fixed the issues that presented themselves during the screening in the UK. I saw the showing in Los Angeles. I really do hope they release the new 'version'.

From an audio standpoint. Many reported the mix was terrible. Didn't they even play the wrong thing at one showing!?

I've heard nothing but positivity from Thriller 3D screenings. The worst comments I've come across were that the bass was too loud (which could very well be a theater issue and not something present in the actual film) and that the music was edited a bit (which is a minor inconvenience).

Unless I've missed something, it seems like Thriller 3D is pretty much on point.

Huh. Odd, wonder what those who saw it were talking about then. I’ll see if I can find what I originally saw about the audio being terrible.

I just hope it's good.

And I hope Ghost will be made into 4K too.

Another Tragedy News:

WILL.I.AM WON'T RELEASE MICHAEL JACKSON TRACKS

BANG Showbiz | a day ago
LOS ANGELES - will.i.am, whose real name is William James Adams Jr, insists he would never release the songs he recorded with the late Michael Jackson because he has too much 'integrity'.

The Black Eyed Peas star was the last person to work with the King of Pop before he died from acute propofol intoxication in 2009, and though he would make millions from bringing out the tracks they worked on together, he knows the Thriller hitmaker wasn't happy with what they'd done and he respects his idol's legacy too much to ignore that.

Asked about releasing the songs, he said: "I would never do that. I grew up obsessed with Michael Jackson. When he called me to ask him to work with him I didn't believe it was him. But those songs weren't perfected in the way someone like him wanted them to be perfected. You don't do that. You have integrity. You respect the legacy."

The 42-year-old star believes a lot of young people think they can reach the heights that Jackson did, but he doesn't think that's possible if they don't put in the work.

He told Event magazine: "It's all about work. You need to be prepared to stand up, get knocked down and stand up again. Society has created a lot of snowflakes and social media has created a generation of kids who think they can be Beyoncé or Michael Jackson on social media. You don't get to be that person unless you give it everything."

The Where Is The Love? hitmaker is single and has no children, but insists his legacy is about more than passing down his genes because his work in technology and the scholarship programme he set up in the Los Angeles neighbourhood where he grew up is far more valuable to the future.

He said: "I don't want to talk about marriage and kids. But it is completely egotistical to think that a legacy is all about you having children. For me, a legacy is the things you do.

"I have a whole generation of kids from my streets going to college and being educated, I'm part of a movement of people working in technology and artificial intelligence trying to make a better future.

"Today we have racism, sexism, a celebrity president [in] Donald Trump, and that's scary. Tomorrow we can make it a better world."

Boooooo. I do have respect.. for his respect though. :) It speaks volumes for those who have thrown Michael under the bus for so many years.

Will.i.am is nothing but an attention seeker. I don't take anything he says seriously.

Now he's just being selfish and greedy.

The songs probably are not any good or MJ would have released them or at least talk about their release. The work Will did on Thriller 25 was garbage. He has not been relivent in years his time has passed long ago. Don’t over think this it’s probably for the best.

just take the vocals of the will.i.am session, get a decent and much better producer and put out the songs.

will.i.am is painfully inconsistent. One minute he refuses to release them, the next he'd consider it if Katherine contacted him, the next he tries to put one of them on his own album. I don't believe a damn thing he says.

Since will.i.am is a cowriter, you'd need his consent to release anything they did together.

he is just seeking attention.............. I hate all the tracks of will's which are in thriller 25.......
we need MJ's Originality, I dont care about will........ as he tried to put the MJ track on his album..... will is self oriented i think and this is bad....

.

Yes after the Katrhine-Story he told he wanted to release a song on his last album but did not get permission from the Estate.

about will.i.am.. we are dealing with someone that has music, would like the world to hear it, yet is conflicted with if/when/why/how it should be released in a way it would honor Michael's wishes..

There will be inconsistencies with that load..

I mean think about it, if it wasn't perfected/finished to Mjs standards back then, why should it be released now? I respect his decision not to release material if MJ himself didn't like it in the state he left it in...

If The Estate ever releases something the The Ultimate Collection again - they could go there if they are no finished.
