Considered one of the most iconic and influential double albums in rock history, Prince's 1999 was released at a major turning point in the artist's career. After years of being relegated to the R&B charts, he experienced his first true crossover moment with the mega-hits "Little Red Corvette," "1999," and "Delirious," shattering barriers with his revolutionary blend of rock, funk, R&B and new wave pop, and making history by being one of the first black artists to have their videos in heavy rotation on MTV. The songs included on 1999 were just a small sampling of the work that was pouring out of Prince in the intensely prolific period of 1981 and 1982. In addition to his own material, he was also working up tracks that he would give to his protégés Vanity 6 and The Time, and recording dozens of songs that would be stored for possible later use, archiving them in his growing vault of unreleased material.

Remastered for the very first time
, November 2019 sees the timeless 1999 offered in a new reissue suite that includes: astandalone colored 180g vinyl 2LP version; aDeluxe Edition 180g 4LP-set with 18 promo mixes & B-Sides; and a pair of Super Deluxe box sets with a total of 65 audio tracks across five CDs and ten 180g vinyl records plus a brand-new DVD containing another complete, previously unreleased concert from the 1999 tour.

The 1999 Super Deluxe Edition represents the deepest dive into Prince's vault to date, bringing fans all of the audio material that The Purple One officially released in and around 1982, as well as 23 previously unissued studio tracks recorded between November 1981 and January 1983, plus a complete live audio performance of the 1999 tour recorded at the late show (the second of two that day) in Detroit, MI on November 30, 1982. The accompanying DVD contains another complete, previously unreleased concert from the 1999 tour, recorded in multi-cam live at the Houston Summit on December 29, 1982.

The Super Deluxe Edition set also features Prince's previously unseen handwritten lyrics for several songs from the era, including the hit "Little Red Corvette," plus images of the analog tape reels from the vault and rare photography from Prince's early ‘80s photographer, Allen Beaulieu. TheSuper Deluxe Edition is completed with brand-new liner notes by longtime Rolling Stone critic David Fricke, revered Guns N' Roses bassist and author Duff McKagan, Minneapolis historian and radio host Andrea Swensson, and Prince scholar Duane Tudahl.

The 1999 Super Deluxe Edition shines a forensic light on the creative output of this truly unique musician, songwriter, producer, and performer at a pivotal point in his career and demonstrates why his unsurpassed body of work continues to generate so much love and passion around the world. Fricke notes, "A landmark collection of vision, craft, and urgency – an unprecedented immersion in the frenetic momentum and private working world of Prince in 1981 and 1982, en route to the profound breakthrough of his fifth studio album, 1999."

The Library of Congress has unveiled its annual selection of 25 films added to the National Film Registry, with an unprecedented seven titles directed by women, the most in a single year since the inaugural registry in 1989. (Scroll down for the full list.)

Among those making the cut for 2019 are Kimberly Peirce’s 1999 Oscar winner Boys Don’t Cry; Greta Schiller’s 1984 documentary Before Stonewall; Claudia Weill’s 1978 Girlfriends; Gunvor Nelson’s 1969 avant-garde pic My Name Is Oona; Elaine May’s A New Leaf, which in 1971 made her the first woman to write, direct and star in a major American studio feature; the 2002 indie Real Women Have Curves, directed by Patricia Cardoso; and Madeline Anderson’s 1970 I Am Somebody, which is considered the first documentary on civil rights directed by a woman of color.

Also notably added to the Film Registry are such classics as George Cukor’s 1944 Gaslight, which won Ingrid Bergman her first Oscar; as well as Robert Stevenson’s emotional dog story, Old Yeller, from 1957.

More recent titles include Martin Scorsese’s The Band documentary The Last Waltz; Sissy Spacek-starrer Coal Miner’s Daughter; Milos Forman’s Amadeus; Prince musical Purple Rain; Kevin Smith’s debut film Clerks (which received this year’s most public votes); Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It; and Oliver Stone’s Platoon.

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced the annual selection which is chosen based on cultural, historic and aesthetic importance to the nation’s film heritage and guarantees the film will be preserved under the National Film Preservation Act. The films must be at least 10 years old.

“The National Film Registry has become an important record of American history, culture and creativity,” said Hayden. “Unlike many other honors, the registry is not restricted to a time, place or genre. It encompasses 130 years of the full American cinematic experience — a virtual Olympiad of motion pictures. With the support of Congress, the studios and other archives, we are ensuring that the nation’s cinematic history will be around for generations to come.”

The 2019 selection brings the number of films in the registry to 775 and spans a century of filmmaking, from 1903 to 2003. The oldest film in this year’s class, is Alfred C Abadie’s short Emigrants Landing At Ellis Island, which was recorded for the Thomas A Edison company. The most recent is Errol Morris’ Robert McNamara documentary, Fog Of War.

Scorsese, who sits on the National Film Preservation Board, also commented today, “The National Film Registry is an essential American enterprise that officially recognizes the rich depth and variety, the eloquence and the real greatness of American cinema and the filmmakers who have created it, film by film.”

Coal Miner’s Daughter
helmer Michael Apted added, “It means the world to me that the world will know that Coal Miner’s Daughter has been acknowledged as an important and lasting film. For a young British director to be given the reins to capture what was truly a deep American subject was beyond rewarding.”

Albert Magnoli, why directed Purple Rain, also noted, “All of us strived to create a film that would capture the attention of what we believed at the time was a small audience. None of us expected this longevity. We simply worked hard every day to get it right, and this honor is a testament to the music, story and characters that were created by all of us so many years ago.”

Jacqueline Stewart, chair of the National Film Preservation Board’s task force on diversity, equity and inclusion, commented, “With this year’s National Film Registry selections, Dr Hayden recognizes the importance of amplifying cinematic voices and stories that have been marginalized for far too long. I look forward to continuing research and dialogue with the Librarian, board members, film communities and the American public to ensure that the registry reflects the full spectrum of our society.”

Anthony Anderson Talks Hanging Out With Prince, Tells His Best Prince Stories (January 2020)

A selection of The Purple One’s archived music that he recorded sometime in the early 2000s will be released on vinyl for the first time. Prince's estate announced the news last week via Instagram.

His estate is releasing Prince’s 2001 and 2002 albums The Rainbow Children and One Nite Alone, respectively, both of which will be reissued on April 17 via Legacy Recordings.

Two live studio albums, One Nite Alone…Live! and One Night Alone…The Aftershow: It Ain’t Over!, will also drop that same day. In addition to the vinyl releases, all of the records will be released on CD as Prince: The One Nite Alone Collection. This later box set will come with a DVD copy of Prince’s filmed concert at the Aladdin in Las Vegas.

Rolling Stone noted that Prince released The Rainbow Children and One Nite Alone under his name after he reverted it back from his iconic Love symbol following his legal dispute with Warner Bros.

These latest releases come after a series of Prince’s estate remastered his classic double-album, 1999, simultaneously released the project across digital and streaming platforms, according to Billboard. Previously, the estate dropped a 15-track album, Originals, comprised of previously unheard songs and re-released The Versace Experience (Prelude 2 Gold), Emancipation, and Chaos and Disorder on vinyl versions as well.

Editor’s note: This piece originally appeared in Missouri Lawyers Weekly, Minnesota Lawyer’s sister publication. For more updates on the case visit Missouri Lawyers Weekly.

One of the most hotly contested celebrity estates of recent years has triggered a new dispute in the Jackson County (Missouri) Circuit Court’s probate division.

The dispute in Missouri stems from the death of pop superstar Prince, whose full name was Prince Rogers Nelson. He died in April 2016 at age 57 of an accidental fentanyl overdose at his Paisley Park home in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

Prince did not have a will at the time of his death, prompting a high-profile, protracted dispute about who should inherit his estate, which is estimated to be worth between $100 million and $300 million. The estate’s value is largely tied to Prince’s intellectual property and music rights.

In 2017, a Minnesota judge decided Prince’s sister and five half-siblings would split the estate. The estate still has not been divided among the family members, however, because it has been tied up in various legal battles.

Now, a new wrinkle in the case has emerged in Missouri following the death of a Kansas City-area man who was Prince’s half-brother.

Alfred Jackson Jr., 66, died of coronary heart disease in August in his home in Lee’s Summit. Jackson and Prince were sons of the same mother, Mattie Baker, and Jackson was one of the siblings in line to inherit a portion of Prince’s estate.

Alfred Jackson’s death has created a new, separate dispute in Jackson County: One of his surviving half-brothers — Shawn Jackson, who is not a Prince sibling — is contesting a will purportedly written and signed by Alfred Jackson that would bypass his living siblings. Instead, that will would give Alfred Jackson’s entire estate to a California entertainment consultant who, according to Shawn Jackson, did not know him well or for very long.

Further complicating the case is a business deal Alfred Jackson purportedly completed on the day he died, in which he agreed to sell 90 percent of his expectancy interest in Prince’s estate to Primary Wave, a music publishing and talent management company.

Shawn Jackson, of Kansas City, filed suit Dec. 13, 2019, calling into question the validity of the will executed in July 2019 and filed in Jackson County’s probate division by attorney Leonardo da Vinci Starke of Miami, Florida.

Alfred Jackson died without children, surviving parents or a spouse, according to the suit. He was survived by five half-siblings, two of whom also are related to Prince. No family members have filed a competing will.

Instead of leaving Alfred Jackson’s estate to his siblings, the challenged will leaves 100 percent of his estate to Raffles van Exel, an entertainment consultant based in West Hollywood, California. Van Exel has been associated with the late singers Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and other celebrities.

Shawn Jackson’s lawsuit alleges that “[van Exel] has a history of searching out celebrities and their family when they are at a low point and then inserting himself into their lives ultimately for his own financial gain or for financial gain of those he is associated with.”

The suit alleges that van Exel benefited from Michael Jackson’s death.

Van Exel initially was listed as the personal representative of Alfred Jackson’s estate, but he stepped down in November, making Starke the successor personal representative.

Shawn Jackson alleges in his suit that after Alfred Jackson was determined to have an expectancy interest in Prince’s estate, “non-family members began appearing in Alfred’s life” and attempting to befriend Alfred to exert influence over him for their own monetary gain.

In his suit, Shawn Jackson identifies van Exel as one of those people, calling him “a person with a questionable history, and an individual with whom Alfred did not have a lengthy or deep relationship.”

Shawn Jackson contends that van Exel devised a scheme to have Starke draft the will, and have it notarized and executed before witnesses who did not know Alfred Jackson or understand his limitations and medical and psychiatric history.

Alfred Jackson lacked the mental capacity to understand the will and agree to it, according to Shawn Jackson. He said Alfred Jackson suffered from Parkinson’s disease and was being treated with antipsychotic medication.

Alfred Jackson also was unable to manage his financial affairs, suffered from confusion and exhibited childlike characteristics, Shawn Jackson alleged in his suit. He also asserted that Alfred Jackson would have wanted to leave his assets to his family.

Starke denied Shawn Jackson’s allegations in his answer to the suit. He is represented by Mark J. Murphy of the Murphy Law Firm in Liberty, Missouri. Murphy did not respond to a message seeking comment. Van Exel also did not respond to a request for comment.

The suit does not explicitly reference the Primary Wave deal, but probate court records shed some light on it. The case record includes an affidavit filed in a Minnesota probate court by Joseph Cassioppi, a Minneapolis-based attorney representing Comerica Bank & Trust, the personal representative of Prince’s estate.

In the affidavit, Cassioppi memorialized a meeting held on the morning of Aug. 29, 2019, between Comerica’s attorneys and Primary Wave attorney Eric Magnuson of Robins Kaplan in Minneapolis.

At that meeting, Magnuson informed Comerica that Alfred Jackson had sold 90 percent of his expectancy interest in Prince’s estate to Primary Wave the prior afternoon, Cassioppi said in the filing. Starke represented Alfred Jackson in the negotiations with Primary Wave, Cassioppi said.

Later that day, Magnuson informed Comerica’s attorneys that Alfred Jackson had died the previous night, Cassioppi said.

Starke’s involvement with both the will and the Primary Wave deal have led a Jackson County judge to remove him as the personal representative of Alfred’s estate.

In January, Shawn Jackson filed a motion asking Judge Mark A. Styles Jr. to remove Starke from the role, citing conflicts of interest. On Feb. 21, Styles granted the motion and agreed to appoint a new administrator to oversee the estate.

Brian Jorde of the Domina Law Group in Omaha is representing Shawn Jackson. He said Alfred Jackson’s heirs-at-law are “incredibly concerned” by pre-death transfers and transactions involving his assets.

“Those need to be investigated … to get a thorough investigation into all of the players and individuals and events that occurred at that time,” Jorde said.

Jorde said discovery in the case is stayed until a March 24 scheduling conference. Court records show he has sought to obtain records of phone calls between van Exel and Starke.

“I’m going to connect all the dots, and I bet it’s going to turn out that all these people were communicating,” he said. “I bet it’s going to turn out there were very few calls to Alfred himself.”

He also believes discovery will show that a “lot of people with a lot of financial motivations were doing a lot of deals,” he added.

The case is Jackson v. Starke, personal representative of the estate of Alfred Jackson Jr., 1916-CV33231.

Little Richard inspired so many musicians and artists including Prince, he was a one of a kind and revered by many. I heard one story that in 1984 when Michael bought the ATV catalogue, he gave Little Richard his masters back.

Richard also appeared on the MTV launch party of Purple Rain in July 1984 (It's on the Purple Rain 20th anniversary deluxe DVD) and Richard gave Prince a bible with his initials on it. Prince kept that bible - even funnier was Richard said "I love Prince, he is me in this generation, him and Michael Jackson and I am going to give him this bible". Then Eddie Murphy came on and lampooned him.

I really don't know. they kind of did with BAD25. but that was almost 8 years ago I think. if the estate look at other estates and listen to fans more and get a better team we probably would get more stuff like BAD25. but I don't know.

hopefully Michael kids will one day own his estate.

While it was not his most commercially successful album, Prince’s 1987 double-set “Sign O’ the Times” is widely recognized as the most diverse, creative and far-reaching outing of his career. The 16-track, 90-minute album represents a distillation of countless hours of songs the artist recorded during one of the most fruitful and prolific eras of his career — the album featured tracks from no less than three proposed albums that preceded it: “Dream Factory,” his final set of recordings with the Revolution; “Camille,” a short solo album by Prince’s autotuned alter ego; and “Crystal Ball,” a triple-album version that was eventually condensed into “Sign O’ the Times.”

While several albums’ worth of songs from this era have long circulated on B-sides, bootlegs or compilations, they’ve never been served up in a single set — but they will on Sept. 25, when Prince’s estate and Warner Records will release a sprawling reissue of the album, the expanded version of which features 63 bonus track – yes, 63 — and two complete concerts, including his legendary New Year’s Eve set with Miles Davis as 1987 became 1988.

A preview track — a version of the unreleased song “Witness (for the Prosecution)” — is available on streaming services now.
Full details are below; the album follows deluxe reissues of Prince’s classic albums “Purple Rain” and “1999.”
The reissue suite will be comprised of the following formats:

 • Super Deluxe Edition(8CD+DVD / 13LP+DVD / audio-only download and streaming)
 • Deluxe Edition(3CD / 4LP 180g vinyl / download and streaming)
 • Remastered album(2CD / 2LP 180g peach vinyl / download and streaming)

Following the successful release of the 1999 Super Deluxe Edition in the fall of 2019, the Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition represents the deepest dive to date into Prince’s vault, and includes a total of 92 audio tracks across eight CDs and 13 180g vinyl records.

The Super Deluxe Edition brings fans all the audio material that Prince officially released in 1987, as well as 45 previously unissued studio songs recorded between May 1979 and July 1987, and a complete live audio performance from the June 20, 1987 stop on the Sign O’ The Times Tour at Stadium Galgenwaard in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

In addition, both CD and vinyl sets also boast a brand-new DVD containing the complete, previously unreleased New Year’s Eve benefit concert at Paisley Park on December 31, 1987, which was Prince’s final performance of the Sign O’ The Times Tour stage show and his only on-stage collaboration with jazz legend Miles Davis.

The Super Deluxe Edition set also features a 120-page hardcover book containing Prince’s handwritten lyrics for many of the songs from the era, including the hits “U Got The Look,” “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man,” and “Hot Thing,” images from the era taken by Prince’s primary photographer in the mid-1980s to early 90s, Jeff Katz, plus images of archive assets including original analog tape reels and studio tracking sheets.

The Super Deluxe Edition book is completed with brand-new liner notes by Prince’s creative peers and friends Dave Chappelle (in conversation with photographer Mathieu Bitton) and Lenny Kravitz; Prince’s longtime engineer Susan Rogers; Daphne A. Brooks, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of African American Studies, American Studies and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies at Yale University; Minneapolis radio host and author Andrea Swensson, host of the Official Prince Podcast; and Prince scholar Duane Tudahl.

As a companion collector piece, fans have the opportunity to order a numbered 7” singles boxed set, strictly limited to 1,987 units, and manufactured by Third Man Pressing in Detroit. Containing remastered audio for all four official 7” singles released in 1987, as well as the two official Warner Records promo singles, the set contains a brand new 7” single comprising two versions of the previously unreleased track “Witness 4 The Prosecution”. The set is available to order now, exclusively via the official Prince Store and Third Man Records Store, and is expected to ship on or before August 14.

I love Sign o the Times super deluxe.

It was not even released in New Zealand and is still not here, due to Covid 19 based shipping delays and the record stores reluctance to buy it as there are almost no Prince fans in New Zealand.

I bought my copy and imported it via Amazon in the USA and think it is the greatest thing ever made, the original album is so well made and sounds great and the outtakes are all outstanding.

Why can't the MJ estate do the same for classic albums like Dangerous and HIStory, 2020 would have been the 25th anniversary and nothing happened!

A lot of great SOTT Super Deluxe videos up on Youtube.

Prince's friend -

Mine -

In honor of Black History Month, Pollstar is spotlighting seminal live performances by black artists every day throughout February. With a deep, rich tradition of transcendent and powerful performers across genres and the ages, we are well aware that we can only scratch the surface of so many thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, brilliant Black performances. In fact, any one genre by itself, be it Jazz, Soul, R&B, Hip-Hop, Blues, Rock, Classical, House, Techno, Country, Reggae and more, could easily fill this one list. Therefore, in this series, we aim to hit on a variety of music from different periods and sounds to help put into perspective the depth and range of so much incredible Black music performances that have infinitely enriched our culture and lives.

On an already incredible night of music that saw James Brown performing with the blues legend B.B. King at L.A.'s Beverly Theater, The Godfather of Soul brought out two unexpected surprise superstar guests to make the night legendary. It came towards the end of the night during an extended jam of “It's A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” when Brown, much to the audience's shock and awe, called Michael Jackson up to the stage from the audience.

Michael Jackson, in his Thriller prime, took the stage, sang a couple of pitch perfect “I love yous" and then pow! The JB’s amped up the tempo and lit into “Hustle!!! (Dead On It).” as The King of Pop exploded into several of his classic dance moves: the quadruple spin, the Thriller knee band and gravity-defying moon walk. On his way off stage Jackson whispered something into Brown’s ear.

“He just insisted that I introduce Prince!" Brown says calling Prince Rogers Nelson to the stage. Of course, if you’re Prince, you make your stage entrance riding piggyback on a large bearded man while pulling off your spangled gloves with your teeth. Prince then straps on a guitar, tosses off a couple of mostly rhythmic licks before squatting down, placing the guitar between his legs and thrusting. Seemingly caught up in the moment, Prince removes his guitar, then his shirt and does a couple of mic stand kicks before leaving exiting and knocking over a prop lamp. It's a shame the two guests didn’t perform longer, with each other and/or with Brown., but perhaps no stage could handle that much star power at once.
