Docs on Dangerous/History

Dangerous doc, since it's not 25 years anymore, I have to drop the 25, but I'd would love a dangerous documentary, directed by Spike Lee, he did a great job with Bad 25.
And a History doc, (not likely, but who knows)
Invincible doc (I saw some pics of Mike in the studio, studio footage pics, from a video)

Dangerous documentary

"From the success of Bad tour, Michael is in the process of recording next album, Dangerous, from going from a compilations album, to a full album, you will get to see Michael Jackson, in the recording sessions of Dangerous." Starting from June 1989- Late 1991, you will see Mike recording, Mike filming the videos for dangerous, with never before seen footage.."

accompanied by Michael Jackson's new unreleased singles from Dangerous, "Men In Black", and "Black Or White" demo.

Dangerous directed by Spike Lee

featuring archive footage of MJ, and Bruce Swedien. (2021)

They should do some stuff like this, (if they still have the tapes and footage)

I saw a tape on Entertainment Tonight, which keeps the faith that I believe they still have the tapes, here it is!:

None. I'd only buy a new HQ/HD concert release.
Here's the question then. Why are so many people interested in HD versions of the videos, but not as many people are interested in HD versions of the actual audio?

Thriller on SACD is out of print and virtually unknown. Virtually nobody is asking for Dangerous/Bad/History on SACD or BD.

Everybody else is getting it (Beatles, Bowie, Clapton, Dylan, Eagles, Floyd, GNR, REM, Toto). Why not MJ? Even Sheryl Crow has beaten MJ to it!

They're already available as digital downloads, check this https://www.hdtracks.com/#/artist/Michael Jackson

I wonder that too, there are MJ folks who are into audio, but proportionally, not so many.

Another problem for me is that if they release something now it's going to "remastered", so unless it uses a true "audiophile" mastering, I'm not sure if I'm interested.

In example, I heard the early Thriller SACD from Japan ... the sound is literally orgasmic (and I don't think it has to do with the SACD performances because I converted the file to FLAC which can't reach SACD specs, it's the mix/mastering that is perfect). But I've heard that later Thriller SACDs actually use the 2001/2008 mastering ... which is not going in a good direction.

I also got Dylan's "Blood On The Tracks" MoFi SACD, I must say yes it's good but I wasn't has blown away by this one than by Thriller SACD (or also Thriller master reel rip is differernt but as orgasmic as the SACD)

Because we have good mixes of the songs. Most people can appreciate these. However, the short films do not hold up the same and are also easier to notice the difference in quality.

This is the first positive review of the Thriller SACD IÂ’ve ever seen - itÂ’s funny how people have different tastes in the same thing

Did you get the actual CD?

Yeah, but people like to own stuff. Plus those aren't in multichannel. I think it's a shame: after all, MJ was a pioneer in this area (Black Or White was the world's first music video in Dolby Surround). Imagine the choir in Keep The Faith in 5.1. Or the news clips in HIStory all coming from different directions. Or the Jam sound effects coming from above. There are endless possibilities.

I've heard that later Thriller SACDs actually use the 2001/2008 mastering ... which is not going in a good direction.
I don't think that's right. There are no "later Thriller SACDs". They made one small batch in 1999 and then stopped making them. It's out of print, that's why you can't get it...

But yeah, agreed. I don't buy anything based on those crappy 2001/2008 masterings. Shudder.

Hmm. The picture quality for something like Billie Jean isn't actually that good. You can use as many pixels as you like and it still won't improve the picture quality. Putting a 4K logo on the box is just an exercise in wasting storage space.

SACD never caught on with the general public, neither has DVD audio or Blu Ray audio. Most people did not buy Quadraphonic & half speed masters versions of albums in the 1970s/1980s. Those audiophile formats usually cost more anyway and you had to have special equipment to play it on. You didn't need special stereos to play Quadraphonic/half speed, but you wouldn't get the effect with any stereo. I don't think most people care about that kind of thing, especially the Napster/MP3 generation. Today streaming is more popular than buying records/tapes/CDs. The average current artist is lucky to go gold from physical sales, other than a few exceptions like Taylor Swift. For most people it's like "why buy a CD when entire albums are on Youtube for free". :laughingv6: You don't even have to buy a download.

If you are talking about trying to upscale the Vision source as 4k then you are correct. However if they actually remastered it from the film source it would look fantastic. I think Billie Jean was only filmed on 16mm so the best quality would be 1080p. If they can do it for Thriller then they could/should do it for Billie Jean, Beat it, etc.

I can't understand the issue of not 4k'ing them like wtf!!! I just hope I don't die before they do it

Billie Jean ripped from 16/32mm film is a more obvious and rewarding release than a Blu Ray audio of the single.

Correct me if IÂ’m wrong, but werenÂ’t the three videos from Off the Wall filmed on tape? I donÂ’t know much about remastering, but I couldÂ’ve sworn I heard that those videos arenÂ’t able to be upscaled to 4K.

They're on tape as well. Beat it I think was the 1st to be shot on 35mm.... might have been can you feel it too though. I'm not sure but so far as solo yeah beat it. The previous ones like Blame it on the boogie- rock with you are on tape

First of all, a Blu-ray collection of concerts from his solo tours, filmed in 35mm + multitrack would be nice. (Hopefully a better 5.1 mix than Wembley though.) The thing about Hi-Res releases is that only a very small percentage of people are actually gonna buy those, since a) most of the tracks are already available in 96khz/24bit on several websites, including this forum. b) be honest. How many people you know are actual audiophiles? c) it would just be another rerelease of the same tracks we already know and love. Nothing new for the mainstream pop culture. And if the estate gets small sales, they're gonna release even less new stuff than they do already. Things like TDCAU 2020 directed by Spike Lee are a nice and welcome addition, though this shouldn't be a replacement for HIStory 25. Now, for the Jacksons' tours, the one I would most like a release for is the Goin' Places tour. Almost no information about it can be found nowadays and a potential live version of Goin' Places alone is enough for me. I would be totally happy with a master tape and soundboard audio release of that.

If the Estate aren't interested in releasing "new music", studio footage or new concerts
I'd love them to release an EP something like MJ's work tape for a song like Liberian Girl or Smooth Criminal alongside the demo, along with the song itself. Maybe release an interview with someone like John Barnes or Matt Forger talking about the conception of the track. Just something for us fans you know
The work tape for Beat It was a highlight of the This Is It soundtrack for me personally

I realise that. Maybe it's because you couldn't get Bad and Dangerous!

They only cost more because of scaling. If more people buy it the price comes down. Anyway, lots of people bought (and are still buying) stuff like the Number Ones DVD. Could have had 5.1 mixes on that.

That's the beauty of modern technology. Graceful degradation. Multiple soundtracks are available on the same disc. If somebody doesn't have Atmos they just listen in stereo. It's fine.

Historically, labels have used big-name artists to sell new technology. If they don't use MJ to push this stuff out then you're letting down the whole music industry down.

I don't think most people care about that kind of thing, especially the Napster/MP3 generation. Today streaming is more popular than buying records/tapes/CDs
Exactly. If you don't offer the customer anything that's superior to their existing version (or YouTube) then why would you expect them to buy anything? If Sony expect the MJ industry to continue, they're actually gonna have to release something that's not just another greatest hits compilation.

And whatever they do release, quality matters

The average current artist is lucky to go gold from physical sales,
Correction: the vast majority of artists never sell enough records to cover their costs. Like seriously, 80% of artists are a commercial failure. And that's just the ones that get signed. 99% of artists never set foot in a recording studio, never mind about selling their first copy.

If you are talking about trying to upscale the Vision source as 4k then you are correct. However if they actually remastered it from the film source it would look fantastic. DVD is already beyond the source material. BJ looked bad on the HIStory DVD. It looked bad on the Visionary DVD. Etc.

You could upscale them to 16K or 256K, but it won't make them look any better. You're just increasing the pixel count.

Another BAD Tour concert (preferably one of the 1st shows of the 2nd leg)

A fan collection with demoes - alternate vocals - studio footage - behind the scenes from the iconic musicvideos etc. etc.

I know this is directed at a small fan circle - but it would be great.

Then they could also release something for the general public to earn money. - new album, Cirque du solei, Broadway etc.

But it would be nice with something directed to the fans also. (and I think that could be done without loosing money, but I know they would not earn a lot from such a project)

I would love to see new concerts being released (Bad Tour Kansas City or Los Angeles). After hearing the Throwing your life Away demo, it would be great for that to be released too.
