Thriller 40th Anniversary

I have high hopes for thriller 40 sonically. I preordered the album on itunes and the waveforms on the album itself are gorgeous. They are not brickwalled. I hope the complete package is the same way.

You can see the waveforms for Thriller 40 on iTunes? Waveforms don't tell everything about how an album will sound but if that's the case it's a good sign indeed.

You get the album tracks immediately on iTunes when you preorder it so you can use an audio editor app like ocenaudio or audacity (with a plugin) to view the aac files. When you compare it to Thriller 25 it is like night and day.

So, on a purely visual front, this seems to be a legitimately good remaster. I’m not an audiophile but that’s a strong start.

Michael’s albums should be updated to Dolby Atmos, even if it’s only the ‘classic’ ones at first (Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad).

I don’t understand why the Estate isn’t doing that, at least for Thriller, now that they are celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Agree. It’s small things like this that go along way alongside the main release.

Dolby Atmos would be amazing. A blu-ray and digital release with the album in Atmos, 7.1, 5.1 and Stereo. I gave up on this since they didn't done this until now so I'm doing it myself

There was a plan to do it when MJ was alive but he didn’t give it the pass. No idea why

What say the chart experts? Does T40 have a chance of hitting nr 1 in the US? T25 came short just 14000 peaking at nr 2 according to wiki
Maybe with a good single release it can?! The two T25 singles didn’t do particularly well yet the album still sold solid amounts…
I’m very curious about the campaign leading up to the release.

That's because the version of "Thriller 40" found in iTunes/Apple Music (or any streaming service that has Thriller 40 currently) is just the standard 1990's remaster of Thriller that every streaming service has had since decades ago. I'm sure that once Thriller 40 actually comes out they will replace it with their new "remaster", which is deffo gonna compete with Thriller 25 on who's louder and more brickwalled 💀

(For anyone curious, the masterings found on streaming for each album are these ones [not counting Hi-Res releases that can be found on sites like HDTracks or Qobuz, those ones are different.]
-Off The Wall: 1990s Remaster (Found in the late 80s/early 90s CD reissues of the album.)
-Thriller: 1990's Remaster (Found in late 80s/early 90s CD reissues of the album.)
-Bad: 2012/2014 Remaster
-Dangerous: 2014
-HIStory: OG Censored master (same as the censored CDs from the 90s)
-BOTDF: never got a remaster so it's the same as the original pressings.
-Invincible: should be the same as the original releases.

Chicago1945 and Hot Street are the best chances for singles to chart well, IMO. But it's also possible neither of those songs are on the album.

Best chances to chart well would be Billie Jean, Beat it and Thriller.

it depends on how much marketing is done in mainstream media. they have two months to spread the word.

thriller 25’ did quite well. for me, the absolute highlight was the dvd - which had all three short films and the Motown 25 performance in their entirety together for the first time. I cherish it to this day💜

I’m also looking forward to the con temporised single releases (and original demos); packaging, radio play, chart position, general reception.. even possible videos. I think this will be an indication of whether the album project will succeed or not.

I’m mostly anticipating the documentary, which I think has the potential to be the best one yet if done right (no profanity). I wonder if there will be previously unseen footage? who will take part? will they just cover the ‘thriller’ album or the entire era?

I’m enjoying the recent social media posts from the official account, referencing this time period. ‘thriller’ continues to make waves forty years later. it is beloved by hundreds of millions 💜 timing is important, but I can’t imagine this not working.

Interesting, regarding Off The Wall 44.1kHz 16 bit, that was my guess too.

But in case anyone would buy hi-res... On Qobuz, when I downloaded Hi Res Off The Wall, I got the 2016 master I think. And Hi Res Thriller the 2008 master I think. Unfortunately master depend on the file quality that you select.
I wrote to Qobuz about this, they replied that they depended entirely on the file that the music labels provide to them.

Knowing this, I feel like there's even less point in buying Hi Res... (or increased risk of wasting money on a poor master)

im genuinely getting really hyped for Thriller 40, i can tell that the box is going to look amazing as it will be extremely sparkly which will be very eye catching at a record store, and if they keep up with the big named demos (starlight, nightline, chicago 1945) we could have probably one of the greatest releases by the estate on our hands.

keep the faith lads, this could be something amazing for both mj's legacy and a new start for the estate.

Sorry but a lot of you are moaning, complaining that your getting songs that you already have well TOUGH LUCK you should not have them.
I never got any of these so they will be new to me and in top quality.
Sorry but these are Michael jacksons property not yours and now The estate of Michael Jackson wants to share these with the world so his legacy and love for his music carries on so don't blame the estate blame yourself.

I really hate that some people are complaining about the songs. First, we only have 2 of the songs so far. Second, you may have heard these songs on Youtube, but there are people that haven't. Thirdly, MJ is dead, he's not making music anymore. Quit acting like the estate has access to unlimited songs.

both of these songs, while on youtube, arent actually in a way if ye get me?
behind the mask - 2010 mix exists, but demo was never released/leaked (fanmade mixes do exist though.)
She's Trouble - only hq version we have is the unfinished demo version of it, and the final mix is in extremely low quality.

so these two songs are still of high value in a way, any songs that were leaked back in 2001 (starlight, nightline, hotstreet) were mixed poorly imo, so the quality difference inthe 40th anniversary will be stark.

also, the likelyhood of Slapstick being released is high as it is the complete version of Hot Street i believe.
