I Am a Fan, But... (What Makes You Heretic Among Other Fans?)

  • Michael’s habit of dismissing his talents as divine intervention or something along those lines annoys the hell out of me. I would love to see a serious exploration of his songwriting and production process from his viewpoint, but he refused to elaborate unless he had to (e.g., the 1993 deposition).
It is this that leads me to suspect he had many songs that were ghostwritten. The foreword to Jean Beauvoir's memoir "BET MY SOUL ON ROCK 'N' ROLL: DIARY OF A BLACK PUNK ICON" by a certain MJ protege is interesting to say the least...

Anyways..

- Who Do You Know sounds great production-wise but is one of the worst demos lyrically. Composition sounds like Paul Anka collab meets Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas with I'm So Blue type lyrics.
- Pitch correction in Invincible tracks is one thing I can look over, but what really annoys me is the "for me" cut from R. Kelly in One More Chance and the fake note extensions in Speechless and You Are Not Alone.

On vocal impersonators:
- Jean Walker is overrated and his voice has not aged well
- Jason Malachi still does one of the best grits, Jeffrey Perez may have more control but has a kiddy tone to his voice
- Marcus Joseph Williams exaggerates too much of the "bubbly" voice and struggles elsewhere

- I love Girlfriend, It's The Falling In Love, Don't Walk Away, You Are My Life. These four songs are much maligned in the fan community but they are some of my favourites.
- PYT is my least favourite song on Thriller. I prefer the demo version.
- Baby Be Mine is the most underrated song on Thriller.
- Michael discarded too many gems. Songs like Sunset Driver, Who Do You Know, Chicago 1945, Hollywood Tonight should have been released on albums during his lifetime.

Absolutely agree
I love Sunset Driver, Chicago 1945 and Hollywood Tonight so much ( I'm listening Chicago 1945 every day and I can't stop :ROFLMAO: )
Baby Be Mine is perfect song

Any examples of pitch correction? I'm not sure Mj would need that!

I haven't a clue what you mean about 'One more chance', that has gone right over my head lol.

I understand what you mean about YANA, I don't see the problem with that unless he lip syncs it. I don't think 'Speechless' had a fake note extension?

I didn't notice One More Chance, but those who are big R Kelly fans noticed it right away. In the Ford Remix (which uses R. Kelly's guide vocal, despite DJ Ford's adamant claims he pitch-corrected MJ's voice sourced from multitracks), there is the exact same grit for "tell her this for me". In the final studio version, only the "see, tell her this for me" after the bridge is MJ. In the last chorus, you can hear R. Kelly make some ad-libs ("tell her this for me... one more chance at love yeah" which have the same grit as the "for me" used at the start.

Speechless uses the fake note extension. It even is spliced a split second before the long note starts. I get that it is a studio effect if it is to make it echoey but gives the false sense he is holding the notes long.
(heaa)
You are always, in my heaaaaaaarrrrrrr eaaaaaaaaaaaaaarttttttt
eaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I’m the other way around for me MJ is a balladeer, I prefer them over the uptempo songs because ballads let his voice shine.

I also prefer digital because physical only collects dust.

I wonder what is the most 'hated' song among Michael's fans. And when I say hated, I mean least loved. I bet girlfriend is somewhere on the top!

A lot of people seem to not care for Childhood, which... well, my heresy of the day is that it always makes me cry, in a positive but still sad way. It just makes me love him even more... I guess not everyone understands this though, which... well, that's their prerogative, I just see it differently.

Honestly, I believe I've already mentioned this a while back, but there's not a single MJ song I don't at least like. The only songs I don't like are... the Cascio tracks, and those aren't even Michael, lol. Even the songs that fans are usually "meh" about or sometimes even outright hate. Granted, I do have a broad taste and this isn't new for me at all, but still.

I LOVE Girlfriend 😂

Honestly if I'm a heretic it's that I barely ever find fault in anything Michael does or any of his music. I am in an intensely naive and blind love with him and I'm A-OK with it! 😂

My vote goes to You Are Not Alone. I can't stand that song, it is a combination of the awful cringeworthy video clip, live performances and the extended note at the end. It also sounds like any other slick modern r&b ballad.

Girlfriend on the other hand is playful and cheeky, the vocal performance brings it to life.

Of course I don't agree with you, 😆, no surprise there :)

One of my favorite songs on HIStory! I told you this and you never said it was among your LEAST favorite of ALL MJ songs!!

5 If You Don't Love Me
DO YOU JUST HATE FUN?!?!

Ok, in all honestly I don't know a portion of those songs at all and others I don't know well enough really. The only two on here I knew about were YANA and IJCSLY and you are deeply, totally wrong in at least one of those cases, but probably both lol.

You have got to be kidding!!! 😯. I think you need to see a doctor! ASAP! go into the emergency! help!!! 🙀
In my defense I love the live performances of the song, especially when they "battle" at the end

I did tell you I didn't like it, I think :p

I love the bridge, I love the vocal delivery but it is repetitive as hell and the music sounds cheap. The general idea is good, needed reworking.

But all the MJ songs I love so much barely get any love from other fans at all!

what 😯 !!! did we agree on something? Unacceptable. I bet you prefer the Bad tour performance of this more than Dangerous, and guess which one I like more!

PS: I think we need to take this discussion off thread :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

You did, but I didn't realize the extent of it 😢

nooooooo!!! it brings me such immeasurable joy! (though I do get that it's repetitive, I just don't care lol).

But all the MJ songs I love so much barely get any love from other fans at all!
But I love all of them! Girlfriend, The Girl is Mine, Someone in the Dark, Be Not Always... I love them all!

@Hiker alright this will be the last post about it
I don't have a preference really, maybe I even like the dangerous tour one slightly more ;-) but that is because I dislike Sheryl Crowe perhaps lol

spitting lyrics or singing lyrics it has an impact on me :p

I could possibly replace it because I do love the vibe and vocals but I would hurt you either way if I do 🙃
But I love all of them! Girlfriend, The Girl is Mine, Someone in the Dark, Be Not Always... I love them all!
Now we're talking...

9 working day and night live
This is my least favourite live performance, its too long, don't much care for the outfit in any of the tours, the whole magic / going crazy part towards the end is so silly!

my last post too, and I will take it, anyone who likes dangerous more, for whatever reason, is forgiven.

He's also wrong about Threatened, I can assure you. One of the best tracks on Invincible. I know you still need to check that one out in full, it's the final song on the album and was intended as a spiritual successor of sorts to Thriller. Sadly the short film never happened... But it's legit a very good song, trust me LOL.

Truthfully I think he's wrong about all of his picks, but then again I'm the wrong person to say that. 🤣
