Why the lip-synching?

I've never seen a documentary where MJ got trashed for lypsinging in concert or award-show, It's really the fans that bring it into focus.
Fans are often MJ´s worst critics. When you go in the Bad-Wembley-Concert-Thread you can even find fans who complain that he wore a black jacket and not a white shirt in the man in the mirror-perfomance.

The 'Off the Wall' medley should have been re-recorded if it was going to be lip-synced or pitched down like Billie Jean.

But to be fair at least MJ was one of the best lip syncers out there. Only thing that gave it away was if he wasnt wearing a mic for a performance.
The fact that you just praised someone who's been considered "the greatest vocalist of all time" for actually faking his gift just tells me how big time crushed were your standards by his maniacal use of lip-synching .
I admire the sadism though

It's usually because people fail at noticing the outright obvious,in general.

A few things gave it away. Like how he'd go from out of breath spoken vocals on In The Closet into perfect album vocals, and how he'd go from perfect album vocals into rough and scratchy live vocals on Beat It.

If even a notoriously average singer like Britney Spears doesn’t get away with miming then so doesn’t one of the greatest voices of all time.

I remember fans booing Britney for just that in Belgium. MJ gets outsung on tracks like Jam or Smooth Criminal by his own impersonators. If these amateurs can do it then so can a guy who sings professionally since before he turned 10.

I’m not going to place MJ on a pedestal for miming through 2,5 tours. I am absolutely not surprised to find out that none of his tours post Victory are highly regarded by professional music critics.

I can show you clips of people attending HIStory concerts being hugely disappointed for paying hundreds of euros to watch a playback show.

This is just NOT DONE period.

PS I’m giving the bad tour a pass because people probably didn’t notice it because he did sing each song live for at least a small part

I agree with you,but could I please see that?I would like to have it for my personal gain (if it makes any sense, not that I care if it doesn’t).

Ok I’ll look it up on youtube. It was a newsreport after the Ostend concert in 97, I had it on VHS but I’m fairly sure I saw it on youtube as well. Not sure if it had subtitles.

In real time, most of his fans did not seem to care about his extensive use of lip-syncing (of the HIStory Tour).

That is pretty obvious from the fact that each subsequent HIStory concert would become sold-out, even though fans (before attending the concert) were already aware (via news reports, etc) that Michael Jackson lip-synced for nearly the entire duration of each previous HIStory concert.

But if it is just one TV news report (from the Ostend concert), then this cannot be a representative example.

The Ostend concert was just one of the 82 concerts of that tour.

@PurpleThriller

So it is without subtitles. the blonde woman around 6 minutes massacres the show, the guy before her was not impressed either though he didn’t mention the miming. Around 2min30 the angryness comes from the cancellation of the show due to Diana’s death.
Also I have to mention I was there so I know from first hand that reactions were very mixed. I say this because this report only has 2 negative interviews @mj_frenzy is right about that it is not representative. When the show got cancelled it actually became a bit grim with people kicking the fences and booing and chanting anti Michael stuff.

Now that I see some of the show again I even find his dancing subpar, his spins are so sloppy. He didn’t even mention Diana once during the concert, one would think an ode would be deserved but no he didn’t change one bit from the entire setup. Autopilot!

I owe you a favor 😈.("thank you" in my language)
What is the blonde woman saying though?
And yeah I agree, the show looks abysmal from the snippets shown. Not energetic and the dancing is ridiculous

It was ok that he faked his gift, because he had that gift.

It was probably a contractual issue that he had to do the tour. It was probably a unanimous decision for the show to lip synced. I can't see why it's such a huge deal and remember, it was also a product of its time.

Translation

“If I put on a CD at home it is exactly the same, two or three minutes of singing nothing more, it sucked”
the guy before her said it wasn’t a “wow” experience, he found it a bit “kitsch”.

I agree with both statements.

To be fair music critics trashed pretty much everything he did post Thriller era.
Bad got decent reviews I think, music websites give it favorable scores as well. Dangerous was mixed on both accounts. After that you are right, everything got trashed. It irritates me when I read reviews for Beyonce or The Weeknd praising them while the critics found dangerous bloated and too long. Albums these days don’t get that critique.

Wow!

Abysmal and ridiculous!

No wonder Michael was crippled with pressure. We put so much pressure and expectation on the man. Sometimes I think we undervalue and under appreciate what he gave us. We have a tendency to turn his material inside outside that you start to lose the essence and magic.

I myself used to be in awe of seeing and hearing things for the first few times. Of course you start to tire of it after a while as it’s not longer fresh but I’ll never forget the excitement of discovering new performances (History tour included)

As always; Michael’s tours are always a divisive topic!

What I’d give to have seen Michael live. Hopefully none of you had rather displeasure of seeing him perform post Bad Tour? What a waste if you had!

Admittedly the lip sync is pretty poor in this performance!

Imagine having the opportunity to see the Michael Jackson in flesh and bones, and not only see him, but be able to see him perform on stage, seeing his artistic creations take shape in front of you, yet still complain about it. Some people just don’t understand how lucky they are.

Look at all these sad people, devastated MJ is lip syncing

Michael Jackson wasn't perfect and there were times that he did things that deserve criticism. His usage of excessive lip-syncing during the 90s is one of those things that deserve criticism. But according to some stans, Michael Jackson was perfect and he did no wrong in his life, and criticising him is blasphemous. These two posts represent everything that is wrong with stan culture.

It’s not about that at all. I have never in my life claimed that Michael was perfect and that criticising him is blasphemous. I just find it sad to see or hear about people who have been fortunate enough to get to experience one of his shows, something which so many others would die for, and still complain about it. It has nothing to do with the criticism itself, it’s about which side of the coin you decide to focus on.

The last thing I would personally do after having seen MJ in concert is tell people how bad the show was because it was mostly lip-synched. That’s insanity!

I had to bite my lips several times but I cannot tell people the truth, it would be too damaging.

Grow up. No one said he's immune to criticism, just that this is pathetic & overkill, as per usual when this BS comes back round every 10 minutes on here. He was ill, should he have performed, no, but we don't know the true circumstances.. and still put on a damn good show to 95% of people. The other 5% are entitled fans and snobby critics who hated his every move anyway.

If I am part of that 5% I can counteract that immediatelly with showing you my Spotify stats.

It's not insanity. Live vocals is a big part of a live show. For many people, arguably the most important. People have every right to be pissed off about a show that is 95% lip-synced.

So no true MJ fan can criticise History Tour? So anyone who criticises MJ for excessive lip-syncing is a entitled fan? Okay (y)
