That’s just amazing, by far the best selling artists of 2009 and ge would have had the best seller by far if there was just one greatest hits album in his discograpy.

Edit: History and Invincible surely also sold at least around 1 million copies

I see Thriller selling 200,000 copies in pure sales and 750,000 overall units including streaming in 2023.

Yes.

Any album that is 18 months old is eligible to appear on Catalog albums list.

When Michael passed away, catolog albums couldn't appear on Billboard 200, which costed Michael a number 1 position on Billboard 200, as Number Ones was the best selling album for 6 weeks straight after MJ's passing. They did change the rules in late 2009 to allow catolog albums to appear on Billboard 200.

So basically number ones would have been longer at nr 1 than Bad, Dangerous, HIStory and Invincible lol

The relatively low sales of Triumph post Off the Wall are particularly head scratching. It is amazing how much name recognition plays a part of success. My gut says Triumph would have reached the top 5 if it was released as a Michael Jackson album.

That's the thing, OTW only got number 3. It didn't do nearly as well as it should have, with the 1 2 punch of DSTYGE and RWY.

Well yes but it is just a number. I don’t know its chart run but it was probably in the top 10 for quite a while. I also don’t know what albums were in front of OTW but it was probably a very competitive period. Expectations were probably rather low saleswise so it is possible they released it in a very strong month.
Triumph a year later was only nr 10 for a week (I believe). Did the general public even realize the Jacksons lead singer was the same singer who did rock with you and DSTYGE? Sounds far fetched but there must be a reason for the difference in sales.

Same for the singles. The OTW singles were top 10s while the Triumph singles failed to reach the top 10. Can you feel it and walk right now were nrs 77 and 73 respectively, Heartbreak Hotel was just nr 22 and Lovely One had decent success at nr 12.

Not unimportant both She’s out of my life and off the wall just barely made top 10

In the UK OTW album peaked at No.3 and spent 24 weeks (apparently!) on the Top 10, 63 weeks in the Top 20. 😲

UK charts - Can You Feel It peaked at No.6, Top 10 for 4 weeks, Top 20 for 6 weeks.

WRN peaked at No.7 although it was only in the Top 10 for 2 weeks.

This one didn't do so well. Peaked at No.7 and was only in the Top 10 for one week.

Dude it's Michael Jackson. He has the most recognizable voice of all time.

It's advertising surely. Just not nearly as much promo. Putting lovely one as the first single certainly didn't help, Can You Feel It is right there. Or even Heartbreak Hotel...
 
Sorry guys I’m not convinced. The sales difference is night and day. Give Triumph MJ’s name and it would have had longevity. I mean it’s quite clear isn’t it, even here these albums are pretty much glossed over because they‘re tagged as Jacksons albums, it has nothing to do with the quality of the music either because it is good.

Also I was talking about the USA, how it did in Europe wasn’t in my mind. The only logical explanation is that the Jacksons barely got airplay on pop radio while MJ solo did. (Just a guess, I literally have no clue) Luckily in the UK that didn’t seem to be the case, probably due to their nr 1 hit of SYTWTG in 1977.

That’s a great chart run for OTW @zinniabooklover , now compare it with Triumph’s….

Also it is something I cannot prove but European people have a much better taste than Americans 😜

Promo surely plays a part but did OTW receive lots of promo then? Genuine question…
As for his voice in 1980, was it that well known? We all know everything kickstarted in 1983 then even the Pope would have known MJ’s voice, not so sure about 1980.

I half agree. I mean Michael Jackson wasn't quite the world-ending megastar we know now in 1980. He was just a young, yet pretty damn successful pop star. I do think most people would recognize his voice though - maybe not the pope, but most music-loving Americans surely.

Yeah, it's good but is it Off The Wall or Thriller good? No. Let's face it, Michael's brothers were all tag alongs. None of them had even 1/10th of the talent Michael had. They had some nice songs together but there's a clear reason why Michael's career exploded and Jermaines went nowhere.

But that’s not the point I’m trying to make. Straight after coming from a blockbuster success Triumph’s success was quite meek, even a widely critically praised triumph tour didn’t carry the album much further.

Take Lovely One it was a good choice as first single, it continued in the party mould of Off the Wall, it features Michael on lead, it is catchy and danceable yet as a first single for a high calibre new album a top 10 really is a must and it didn’t make it, then we had Heartbreak Hotel which is a complete 100% MJ song in all but name and it failed to reach the top 20. Give that song a spot on Thriller and it is top 5.

Look a bit further to Victory, that album got a huge boost by the Thriller success but Triumph which features Michael’s vocals on all but one song did not. So this means it was only since thriller that anything with MJ’s involvement turned into a commercial success. This is the point where he got recognized as the mega star that he was. Now imagine Victory had as much Michael vocals as Triumph had… it would have been a diamond seller. Most likely….

So I can only conclude people were not exactly aware that MJ was the lead singer of the Jacksons. Heck maybe many of them were even still confused who the Jacksons were after the name change.

I am convinced if you go on the streets right now and ask random people who the lead singer of the Jacksons is, many of them would not know it.
