What do you guys think the chances of getting a 50th anniversary album for "Off The Wall" is?

I, personally, think there is a smaller, yet great enough, chance of getting that album in 2029. I feel the same about maybe a "Dangerous 40th" anniversary album. But, I want to hear what all of you have to say about it! Also, if there has been any news regarding any more anniversary albums I have not heard about, forgive me. Lol.

It's 5 years from now... It is not worth debating this yet lol
But to give an answer I think we will get a celebration for one of the most legendary albums of all time, I have no doubt.
That's all I wanted to hear! (Yes, I was conflicted about asking this now since there is 5.5 years left.)

thread added to the schedule

Dangerous needs a documentary directed by us! We complain so much about the estate but...why not just make a real hq documentary about dangerous. It's more informative information about mj in this forum than anywhere in the planet...other than the estate who is pretty clueless to alot & I think they don't care because they're are old af. They were around the man...they could careless. We love him. They loved what he could do for him. So we should do something for Michael to commemorate dangerous, history & Invincible. Time to stop complaining & make a change!

I think we will get something for Off The Wall 50 but dont expect it to be any more impressive than Thriller 40. I expect anniversary re-releases of OTW, Thriller and BAD but the Estate do their best not to acknowledge anything he did post 1990.

The difference is that this would be a 50th year celebration and it is a legendary critically acclaimed album. Look up any large all time list and you will find the album
Included. They simply can’t let this pass up.

Speaking of Off The Wall, in 2015 MJBeats had leaked a trailer for OTW 35, hinting at the presence of unreleased tracks and, iirc, also showing a never-before-seen interview video. It was also constantly blocked on YouTube and Facebook, now there is no trace of it on the web.

I wonder: has it been confirmed that it was a fake?

MJCast episode 16 talked about this. The trailer was leaked, appeared to be a pro job and was shared across platforms. Within 24 hours Sony issued take down notices and the thing disappeared from the internet. It was quickly followed by a "mock" trailer that criticised previous estate releases.

On another note, prior to the "This is It" announcement at the 02, Michaeljackson.com had been given an Off the Wall theming with brick skins that were very obviously pointing to an Off the Wall release. Ultimately shelved with the This is Is announcement, it would appear that Sony had been planning a reissue for several years.

(It must take a long time to decide on the colour of chalk)!

Michael Jackson Describes the Music on His Album Off The Wall
July 23, 2024
Michael in 1980 on how to describe his hit album “Off the Wall”: “Music is music. If you can dance to it, fine. People love to dance. You can go out Friday night, you want to party, you want to dance, you really want to get crazy – live life off the wall. And that’s what it’s all about. Call it disco, whatever. It’s dance music. It’s got the African drum rhythms – original – like rock ‘n roll, disco – but it’s dance music and people shouldn’t categorize it racially – it’s for the whole world – because everybody dances – that’s the point.”

I can't even.

I mean, firstly, there's absolutely no chance. But secondly, it's not something I even want. I already own the album. Why would I want to buy it again with worse sound quality?!

If they've got new material to release, then just release it. I'd be up for an Xscape 2, but I'm not gonna buy an old album just for 2 "bonus tracks".

You guys need to stop thinking like label executives and start thinking more like fans.

As it will be 2029 we could get OTW 50 or TII 20.
It is not proper to celebrate one's death with an anniversary release.

Michael Jackson died because of what was going on during the 'This Is It' era.

It would look like you are happy because that person (in that case, Michael Jackson) died.

Thirdly, it would be pointless to release a 50th anniversary version of the 'Off The Wall' disco album, considering that the disco genre has been dead for half a century.

Disco is not dead. Just look at how many people love disco (including me) even though they are young ! Yes, it's from the 70s, but it's coming back to life !

It has? Then what were acts like Daft Punk & Jamiroquai doing? Disco never died, it was just retitled "dance music", "house music", "acid jazz", "techno", "EDM" etc. The entire idea of remixes & 12" maxi singles originated during the 1970s disco era. So has DJs (like Skrillex) as stars. Many 1970s disco songs have been sampled over the years too. Pet Shop Boys even have a series of remix albums called "Disco", "Disco 2" etc. Also a lot of what was called disco in the 1970s was really R&B & funk.

August 09, 2024
Released this week in 1979, Michael’s “Off The Wall” album is the first album he released as an adult solo star. NPR Podcast Celebrates the 45th Anniversary of “Off The Wall”
September 24, 2024

National Public Radio’s The Culture Corner podcast and its host John Morrison celebrated the 45th anniversary of “Off The Wall” in a recent episode, noting that the album “served as a gateway to Michael Jackson’s eventual domination of popular culture” and that “it remains a high artistic achievement to this day”. https://www.npr.org/2024/08/13/1198912635/culture-corner-michael-jackson-album-off-the-wall

More to the point, albums are dead. Nobody buys CDs. In an era of streaming, a release makes no sense. Might as well beg Sony for a wax cylinder.

Off The Wall is one of the greatest albums of all time and it absolutely deserves a 50th anniversary edition.

But is there enough unreleased material from Off The Wall recording sessions? I doubt it.

Maybe it they can make a great behind the scenes documentary on the recording process of the album, it would be great, but do I expect the Estate to do that? Absolutely not.
