The topic of HSP ( Highly Sensitive Person) - Let´s discuss and chat

One aspect of HSP can be:

Your emotions are often intense and even rollercoastering to the point you feel physically exhausted 🫠

It was a gamechanger for me to learn that this is not necessarily pathological.

However, if you feel this rollercoastering of and being plunged into feelings, emotions is asking too much of you, keeping you from leading your everyday life, ...

... you should open up about it to someone you trust or see a professional. 🤗

Isn't this true for anyone ?
Could also be the result of abusing coffee.

Is anything "pathological" as long as you are not a threat to yourself or others, and you can make or have the material/financial resources to live?

I don´t drink coffee with caffeine, only "decaf".
Omg, bluemoon. I don't know if I'm an HSP but if I drink coffee at any time my heart beats fast like I'm climbing the Everest Mount! And drinks like Red Bull or something like that make my heart beating fast as well 🥲 It's like poison for me, really

Interesting thread and I'm not surprised to find it in an MJ-Forum :) .

I can connect to many things and also most...no, all of my friends have similar issues - people that feel alike often meet each other, that's why I wrote my first sentence. I also think a lot of empathic people are Michael fans, because they can feel what he went through and understand his message. Everything connected somehow...and yeah, I only go shopping with noise cancelling earbuds, listening to music or podcasts. Need sunglasses all the time, I am easily stressed out (mostly by people doing stupid things), I am very empathic and could add a lot of things to that list - ah, of course tinnitus and hearing loss on one ear, too. But the text is already long enough 🙃.

Wish I could put on a thick armor of indifference.
Feel u...I am trying very hard atm. It's just too many bad messages at once 😐

I like to sleep 😂. No, seriously...most of the time I am stressed out because there is not enough time to do the things I like: photography, drawing, hiking (especially Ireland, Norway,...), riding, listening to music, singing (when noone is listening 🤭) etc. ...and I really love to just stay in bed and sleep bcs everything is so exhausting 🫠

@bluemoon7 what's your favourite songs to sing? A certain style or anything?

I love to sing jazz standards and pop, but I am really very active in a choir that performs sacred music (Kirchenmusik), although I am not really religious (anymore) lol. But choir singing gives me so much  On April 6th, we well have a hugeeee concert in my city - Bach: Matthäuspassion

I imagine jazz is very cool to sing. I was in a choir, too loooong time ago at school 😅. Mainly because we were allowed to leave class for practicing :ROFLMAO: .

But yeah, the concert-feeling is cool. Especially when it's a big one like yours. Will it be in a church then?

Wellllll, that is a good enough reason! :ROFLMAO:

Yes

Had to think about this thread again for two reasons:

  • the sun is shining so much at the moment and I am always blinded/my eyes hurt, so I only go out with sunglasses on and keep my blinds closed at home
  • had an amazing vacation with my friend and a family visit after but now I am so happy to have some days without any people around me (at least hope so) because my social battery is so empty 😶‍🌫️

Yes, I do this as well. My friends think I am weird for this. I love the sun, of course, but sometimes the light and heat is too much, especially when I have a migraine day 🫥

For sooo many years, I thought this was weird of me (because people thought so) Know I know this is normal for introverts / HSP, and I can enjoy my alone time even more.

I don't really love the sun 😅 . In Athens I felt like the light (to me) was not as pleasant as in countries that are more up north because it felt more...intense? Dunno...maybe imagination.

And in general it's sad that we always feel weird when we are different like "most" people. Everyone is an individuum and has different needs. We should all stop judging others and especially stop being so harsh on ourselves.

We, especially as HSP, tend to hold a lot of tension in our bodies. This can lead to problems like pain.

When we learn to see our bodies as our friends, and take care of it, we gain confidence and even a new sense of peace / safety.

Activities like dancing, singing, exercise, to name a few, can help us connect with our bodies. You don't need to be a pro like Michael 😄, just try to feel and have fun!

Sorry for asking, but HSP and autism are same things? I just don't really understand what is HSP

No, they are not the same thing.

A definition from PSYCHOLOGY TODAY:

"Highly Sensitive Person, or HSP, is a term coined by psychologist Elaine Aron. According to Aron’s theory, HSPs are a subset of the population who are high in a personality trait known as sensory-processing sensitivity, or SPS. Those with high levels of SPS display increased emotional sensitivity, stronger reactivity to both external and internal stimuli—pain, hunger, light, and noise—and a complex inner life. [...]

HSPs are thought to be more disturbed than others by violence, tension, or feelings of being overwhelmed. They may, as a result, make concerted efforts to avoid situations in which such things are likely to occur. On the more positive end of the trait, high sensitivity is thought to be linked to higher levels of creativity, richer personal relationships, and a greater appreciation for beauty. [...]

Clinical psychologist and researcher Elaine Aron describes four indicators that we can use to judge whether we are highly sensitive, which she refers to using the acronym DOES:

  • Depth of processing
  • Overstimulation
  • Emotional reactivity, including empathy
  • Sensitivity to subtle stimuli"

Autism, according to Wikipedia:

"Autism spectrum disorder[a] (ASD), or simply autism, is a neurodevelopmental disorder"

I mean, when I watch some favourite sad moment of movie, I can cry. And when I listen to favourite song, I can't stop myself from dancing. Does it mean, that I am HSP?

Sorry for asking, but HSP and autism are same things? I just don't really understand what is HSP
Autism is a spectrum and people who are autistic to a certain degree can be overstimulated very easily, too, depending on the situation.

Just wanting to dance or cry by watching things doesn't make you HSP. But again, this is a spectrum, too. You always have to ask yourself if you kind of suffer in certain situations or you feel overwhelmed when there are too many signals entering your brain. Hope that's understandable 🤷.

Not necessarily. There are some tests online you can do to find out if you might be an HSP :)

For example: https://hsperson.com/test/highly-sensitive-test/
Done! What does it mean?
