"Michael", a biopic about Michael Jackson, is officially happening.

"Frankesteining" tracks doesn't seem like a bad idea depending as to what extent it's being done—if we take "Dream Away" as an example which is a song with vocals that are almost complete but with a missing ending, and they borrow a bit of another song that has vocals that fits melodically and lyrically enough to fill in that specific gap then it seems ideal. It's also a good way to utilize those unfinished scraps rather than to leave them in the vault indefinitely. If it's done that way I'd absolutely be onboard with it.
In theory this sounds very cool and these days almost everything is possible using a combination of scraps, A.I., impersonators. etc..

In reality however there aren't a lot of examples of good Frankesteining imho and especially regarding MJ and The Estate I would be very cautious with all the fake tracks, weird remixes, wrong dates, wrong era sounds etc. they brought into this world

Not at all interested in an original song being written for the biopic ngl.
I take your point. Truthfully, idrc about it. It doesn't bother me that Michael doesn't have an Oscar. I did have a wild and crazy moment fantasising about a new Buz Kohan (or BB! or the other BB!) song just bc they are 3 of my fave Michael collaborators. Pure fantasy and very enjoyable. But in rl it doesn't concern me.

For 'new' music in the biopic I'd be very happy if they used Dream Away. As long as they don't mess with it and ruin it. I don't want AI or 'modernising' or any of that.

They changed the lyrics of the bridge, which completely changed the meaning of the song. That song was about underaged girls being taken advantage of by older Hollywood men who make them do sexual things with false promises of fame and glory that never come true. And Michael wrote that it was based on a true story.

Michael's lyrics were trying to warn young girls about what would happen if they went to Hollywood:
She doesn’t even have a ticket
She doesn’t even have a way back home
She’s lost and she’s alone
There’s no place for her to go
She is young and she is cold
Just like her father told her so
She's too young to understand
She a streetwalker at her age
She's young and she's afraid
She sells her body to get paid
It's too much for a girl her age
Police is stalking her today
They now know she ran away

She is running cause she's scarred

But they changed the lyrics for this instead, now suddenly the girl did make it big in Hollywood and her problem is just paparazzi, totally different story:
She gave up her life to follow her dreams
Left behind everything for the movie scene
Nothing more she could want, she was determined to follow her plan
She wanted Hollywood, she wanted it bad
Now that she got her dream, she became a star
It all looked so good, but only good from afar
Imprisoned in every paparazzi's camera, every guy wished they could

Now it's back to reality for Ms. Hollywood

Oh yeah I forgot about this.. Removing the lyric 'She Is Only Fifteen' is a crime in itself.
It's actually an important line for the meaning of the song, the melody of the song (it's a real punchline) and even for MJ's image (it's shows he was sensitive towards all children, especially showbiz children, and not just boys, so to speak)

Michael sort of seemed to love to tell stories about vicitimized girls. LS, DYWYCA or HT.

You forgot about his main song about abusing girls - Superfly Sister. This song is about Latoya, being abused by her husband and forced to make false allegation against Michael

Surely they’ve known that they were going to do a biopic for well over a decade, even if the script was only 2019 etc. They would have saved some of the best song/songs for it.
You‘re talking about the estate of estates aren’t you?
The same who released 3 fake songs on the biggest posthumous release of all time?
The same guys who thought chalk was a thing for an anniversary?
And on and on..

They've been floating the idea of an MJ biopic since 2008. Thome Thome floated the idea, along with the musical and Cirque De Soleil shows. Branca has followed that template to a Tee.

So says Jay_Tee.

Could they get away with saying a certain song from the late 2000's was created and recorded for the purpose of a biopic, even though it happened 20 years ago, to open the door for an Oscar nomination?

That looks doubtful, tbh. Looks like the song has to be directly connected to the project in question, not some notional project that might or might not happen in the future. If I'm understanding these notes correctly.

"B. Original Song:

An original song consists of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the motion picture. There must be a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition (not necessarily visually presented) of both lyric and melody, used in the body of the motion picture or as the first music cue in the end credits.

II: ELIGIBILITY

A. The work must be the result of a creative interaction between the filmmaker(s) and the composer(s)and/or songwriter(s) who have been engaged to work directly on the motion picture.

III: SUBMISSION

A. For an achievement to be eligible for nomination in any of the Music categories, the submission must be initiated either personally by the songwriter or composer, or by their authorized representative, or by an authorized representative of the distributing studio of that film."

Since there's obviously no way for Michael to write new music then I guess a way to make it eligible would be to get Jaafar to sing on a new song written for the biopic but then have it include unheard MJ verses, kind of like a "Don't Matter To Me" type of duet? Is that what they're planning to do?

They said they're gonna be using scraps of unheard MJ songs to make new music, I'm starting to think that's what they'll be doing lol
That might be OK just to create something to be used in the biopic but I don't think it'll work for a song that they wanted to submit for Oscar consideration - not that we know if that's what they're aiming at. But, anyway, writing a song but incorporating material from an earlier song could be problematic. The song from the Robbie Williams' biopic that got put forward for Oscar consideration got disqualified bc apparently it used some material that already existed. I don't know the full details but that's my understanding of what happened. I'm sure the production team know all of this stuff already and I'm sure they want Oscar nominations for the film itself but they might not be thinking about Oscars for the songs.

Maybe it depends on the status of the pre-existing song? With the Robbie Williams thing, I have no idea if the existing material that got incorporated into the new song had previously been released and therefore existed in the public domain. If a fragment of a song has truly not been heard before maybe that's different?

I don't care about Oscars, tbh. I'm sure it's something he would want but I'm happy with Michael's existing achievements. But I would love it if something new could be incorporated into the film, somehow.

I don't want them just replacing MJ vocals with Jafaar. That's hillarious! That will make movie more inauthentic. They already said, that Michael will use usual pills instead of demerol and morphine. I don't want this movie become too fabled

Any proof?
"In one of the moments from the "Michael" movie trailer shown at CinemaCon, viewers saw Michael Jackson sitting alone at a piano in a rather gloomy and quiet atmosphere.
He looks very tired and worn out. There’s a small bottle of pills placed on the piano.
Michael picks up a few pills with his hand and mechanically, without emotion, swallows them, washing them down with water.
The room is almost completely dark — everything is shrouded in semi-shadow, highlighting the character’s loneliness and inner pain.
At that moment, very soft, sad music plays in the background — most likely one of his songs, reimagined in a more minimalist arrangement.
This scene, apparently, highlights his vulnerability, psychological pressure, and health issues that had built up over the years"

Not like MJ was addicted to painkillers and quite publicly announced he was going to rehab for it, or anything.
He did rehab. Elizabeth forced him. Unfortunately it did not lead to anything. And eventually he become even more adicted during Invincible times

How is that? There are music biopics totally sung by the actors, all lip syncing to the original recordings, or a mixture of the 2. There's a John Lennon biopic called Nowhere Boy, where it's about him as a teenager. There's no recordings that exist of John or the other Beatles as teens. Even if there were, they would have most likely been home recordings that wouldn't have the sound quality needed for the movie. That's a reason Tina Turner re-recorded the Ike & Tina songs for her biopic. They used a session singer for Ike's vocals., even though Ike was still alive at the time and he actually visited the film set. What's Love Got To Do With It got some Oscar nominations. The voters didn't seem to care that there were no actual Ike Turner vocals featured in the movie.

It has to be lip synched! With Michael's voice!

listen to this
Shmuley about MJ working on Invincible:
"He could barely even get to the studio. He could barely even wake up. He had fraudulent doctors all around him, giving him crap, that was going to kill him."

Listen to it below, I've marked the spot.
