The Discussion of MJ's Unreleased Tracks

"It's one of his classics and I just sang along with it and did new background vocals ..."
Mariah Carey
Could be IJCSLY.
I don‘t think IJCSLY would be fitting, especially since it‘s already a duet, what about The Lady In My Life… or Liberian Girl, sure most wouldn‘t call them classics but come on, every one is a classic

Slave to the Rhythm is literally just the original version polished up with Timbaland idiosyncrasies though. Like they are very similar and it's incredibly obvious.

That's the truly valid criticism of Xscape, that the project is just a vehicle for L.A. Reid to get his unused MJ demo shined and shown to the world. Cause MJ was not gonna bring that one back out any time soon.

Otherwise, A Place with No Name, I hesitate to say it's bad cause Stargate were passionate and I do find the Higher Ground vibe interesting. But it just will never compare to America's sample.

And I forgot to finish this so I'm done talking for now lol

The whole Xscape album is shit because it sounds totally dated… when you listen to it you know exactly in which decade it was released thanks to The use of trap beats… even MJs Dangerous sounds more timeless..

The album itself could have been a timeless classic IF they had gone with the original versions only and allowed an actual mixing engineer do the finishing touches.

i remember when everyone said Bad was dated sounding before 2012s reappraisal came around.

I think we’re being a bit exaggeratory suggesting that the original versions are any less dated than the remixes. I totally empathize with not liking them, but both the remixes and the originals are (for the most part) very indicative of their time.

Maybe that’s why MJ didn’t release them. I’m not saying that MJs releases are all 100 percent timeless… but they are more timeless than Xscape

Personally I'm not against modernizing tracks the way they did with Xscape. Think about it, wouldn't the album have been worse with just the original versions? No cohesion at all in melodies, sounds, and approaches, with demos coming from the 80s, some from the 90s, others from the 2000s… not to mention the vocals, or how raw and unfinished some tracks were, like Loving You.

Whether they suck or not is subjective. I'm not a fan of DYWYCA (It throws in way too many unnecessary hee-hees, if I remember right) and STTR (especially that one, it makes it sound like some 00s eurodance track you'd hear in a nightclub, way too far from the original). But aside from those, the rest do a solid job of presenting a cohesive disc.

Every discussion people pick a different "best" and "worst" song. It's like The Rise of Skywalker discourse, what's the only good part and the worst part?

His albums are absolutely timeless, yeah. But the demos are very… not. The remixes gave them new life. We can debate the ethics and quality of said “new life,” but I would argue they’re no more or less dated than the originals.

So does anyone know if one source of Xscape Originals is better than others? Like does it differ between digital platforms and physical media, or are they all lackluster because of (non) mastering and the odd mono version, or even brickwalling/overcompression (like Bad 25)?

All releases share the same awful sound quality as far as I know.

Jumping to the HIStory era. I believe that "Ask DD" is in fact a post-Dangerous/pre-HIStory outtake:

The date written on the tape inlay is clearly 4-8-92 (April 8, 1992). SPYHO is said to have been finished with Bruce in April 1992. I wonder whether the song originates from the same sessions or maybe even from the Dangerous sessions (see "Ask Rene").

SPYHO was released as a promotional CD in Japan in 1991

Yet another confirmed unheard MJ song/collab. I haven't seen this collab been confirmed like this. So many songs out there, even if they aren't complete. Estate shooting them down as per usual

ok so... most possibly it's one of the known MJ classics but with added vocals by Mariah.
my guess: the estate would give us just one remixed song for the biopic best of compilation.

well.... my expectations are below zero (i want -new- songs!)

I wonder why we don’t have many HIStory outtakes, yet we have a bunch of Thriller, Bad, Dangerous, and Invincible ones. Same can be said for OTW. I really would love to hear more HIStory outtakes

Most of them were left as grooves, and the bulk of releasable leftovers were revisited for Blood On The Dance Floor ("Morphine" and "Is It Scary;" "Ghosts" and BOTDF outtake "In The Back" needed to be fleshed out after the HIStory sessions so they don't count). As far as I know, only three tracks are worthy of being released (technically two since one was remixed and released posthumously).

Can you name the two remaining tracks?

Apparently "Ask Rene" is just the instrumental groove of "2 Bad".

Because a good chunk of the work that went on HIStory was spent in revisiting Michael's old demos. At least a third of the songs that ended up on the album are songs from other eras, and the new songs that were left out ended up being released on other albums (Blood On The Dance Floor, TUC, and Michael) so now we're left with studio scraps.

I do think "Rich Girl" might be one of the rare few songs left from that era that's in a releasable state, though. Brad Buxer pointed out that the song was "far along" and that it's one that he wants to see get released the most.
