The Discussion of MJ's Unreleased Tracks

Shut Up and Dance is from 2008?! It sounds astoundingly dated - you could've told me that was early 1990s and I'd believe you.

For someone so forward thinking I can't believe he was working on something so dated.
By 2008 it was ten years old. It originated in 1998.

The year I was born...:

This!
'Hollwood Tonight' (although also still a demo) sounded dated too, imo

Matt Fiddes again claimed that Michael was working on an album with Barry Gibb in 2003:

'We were just viewing houses as Michael wanted to live on Palm Beach, so he could be close to his friend Barry Gibb'

'He was spending Christmas with a friend in Florida. He was recording an album with Barry Gibb on a daily basis and wanted to move to Palm Beach.'

I like certain things about "Shut Up And Dance" but overall I'm not a fan of it either, it sounds as if someone asked an A.I to generate the most generic sounding MJ song and this is what it came up with. And the rework is only a slight upgrade while being a downgrade in many aspects.

I don't know if Jason Derulo's "Let's Shut Up And Dance" song took any inspiration from it but it's a much, much better song. Can't say I blame them that they decided to go with an original tribute instead of reusing the demo.

I've seen quite a few MJ detractors say he couldn't move past Dangerous NJS style sonically.

I think the criticism is misguided but tracks like this being worked on don't help the case against the argument.

I get the argument of such songs being dated, but I truly believe the man was a visionary. A couple of years after his death we see a big wave of "Back to base" type of tracks mimicking the 80's and 90's style like Bruno Mars , The Weeknd and Dua Lipa did. So I really believe MJ was seeing that desire for the Nostalgic sound and worked on tracks like these.

Yeah I said it's the difference between Dangerous as done by Teddy and the original demo.

If MJ had at least recorded the hook of SUAD we’d have a better vision of it.

Absolutely too far now. That song is a pure ear worm.

2008 top hits were like Don't Stop the Music, Umbrella, Just Dance, 4 Minutes, Miss Independent, With You, Womanizer, When I Grow Up. To me it sounds right at home. But yes, it also does sound like his NJS tracks.

Please download link for Shut Up And Dance. Original source file if someone have. Thanks!

That song sounds nothing like the ones mentioned. SUAD does sound like it's from 89 or 90

I heard it at a Brad Buxer and Prince conference in France...
This song is a real caricature/parody, or of a Chris Tucker like with habitual mocking "hihi Shamone".
Do you remember what version they played? Was it the first version or was it the rework? I'm hearing reports saying that the latest version is actually a posthumous rework, did Michael Prince mention if he was working on the song back then?

Think it's important to remember that we have no idea what Mike would have done with any leaked songs we're hearing from the 2000s period / "Bedroom List".

They could have been left unfinished, finished but scrapped, they could have been part of a full album or put out as standalone singles. We have no idea. I try to keep things like this in mind whenever I hear a leak from the final era of his life.

What puzzles me most regarding the whole Shut Up and Dance leak is that Rodrigo Teaser (a very popular and proeminent brazilian MJ Impersonator) has talked about this song during a podcast in 2022 (
https://www.mjjcommunity.com/thread...he-unreleased-track-shut-up-and-dance.200452/ )
and how Michael Prince let him listen to a snippet of it. I really believe he heard Michael there, especially now that we've heard several mixes from Eric Kirkland and his MJ impression is alright, but not enough to fool us, MJ diehard fans. I don't know, just sharing some thoughts here that we might not know the whole picture of the recording process of it (maybe MJ did a vocal scratch take back in 2008?)

I thought the same, but MP said some time ago on the Archives that MJ never recorded any vocals.
