The Official 'Michael' Bio-Pic Thread

To my German fellows:
Did you watch the film in English or the German dubbed version? The cinemas near me rarely screen the English version (and if they do, they do in the smallest rooms). How good or bad is the dub?
So either it will be German and in Dolby Atmos (there is no or almost no real IMAX in Germany anyways) or original English, but super small and probably only with standard surround sound.
Went to see the original version. They even showed it at the largest cinema in my town (2 or 3 screenings per week in OV, I think)

EDIT: They even have screenings OV plus subtitles which I find interesting

Only OV, but I am in Nuremberg, so they show it quite often, thankfully... I think the German dubbed version would be weird to watch 🙈. Also...I watched it in Dolby Atmos OV but imo the sound wasn't so great, way too much bass...so I, personally would always prefer the OV.

I recommend both. First German IMAX and then English Dolby Atmos or IMAX. German dub is actually pretty good!

It would be nice, but I think the reaction on charts in the public is worth so much more than that. Freddie and Queen didn't have a large section of the population question whether they were a dark criminal - yet look at what MJ's name and music has caused in 2026 after what happened 7 years ago.

I believe that this is one of the biggest wins of his story. With everything against him, he pulled this off.
Yes. But we also have to consider fans going to the cinema 3, 4, 5 and more times. I'm not really sure Queen fans massively went on repeated viewings in the cinema. Though at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. Only the money it makes matters.

I wouldn't bother with the german as Jaafar's voice acting is phenomenal.

Of course some Queen fans went multiple times 😂

Same as ABBA fans for Mama Mia.

You think only MJ fans do this??

Mind you from what I see and hear all over social media, there could be more repeat visits for MICHAEL, as it’s a blast and highly enjoyable.

Strange thing to throw shade about. It’s like people repeat buying Coke or Pepsi, and others moaning “they only buy so much because they enjoy it!”

🤷‍♂️😂😂😂

WHY are we going multiple times and enjoying it!!!!

Most real Queen fans seem not too happy with the movie. I doubt that there are that many who saw it multiple times in the cinema. I'm a Queen fan and didn't even see it once in the Cinema. And then I saw it once on streaming and didn't feel the need to watch it again. Not even for free. Really, where is the shade?? I'm just saying Michael fans are more likely to go watch that movie multiple times in the cinema, also as Michael fans on the average I would say, are a lot younger than the average Queen fan.

Any idea where to find sales numbers for the 'Michael' music album?
Amazon report 400 copies of the CD in a month. Maybe extrapolate from that?

Really, it's not gonna be a lot of copies. The audience for the movie is people who already like Michael and therefore have all the albums.

Plus, you know, record sales are dead because everybody is streaming now.

why paris jackson says that it's "fantasy land" and that it panders to a certain faction of her dad's fanbase
I didn't read anything into that regarding guilt, lol. She's just saying it's sugar-coated because... it is. Basically it's a fictional story that has been written by John Logan and the rest of the PR department. It's just a promotional tool to make people stream Billie Jean more often. Think of it as a 2-hour commercial.

she shouldn't say such ambiguous things like that because the media will run with it
I guess there always comes a point where you stop caring what the media says, because it's so unimportant.

And if your net worth is $100 million, that day comes a lot quicker than it does for everybody else.

I wonder what streaming platform they will release this on. Netflix would make the most sense and get the most streams. We know it won’t be HBO lol.
I've seen ads on Netflix and Prime.

It will be amazon prime apparantly. I would prefer it to be netflix since I think its more mainstream.
But maybe Amazon has more streams in total inernationally?
I have absolutely no idea. Maybe Amazon pay a better royalty rate or something.

You say you are apathetic about the movie and don't care whether it fails or succeeds. But you are here in this thread, being a killjoy and having a go at people who are celebrating the success of the biopic.
I wouldn't really call it having a go. I come in every 3 days or so to see what's new.

You do the same thing in the charts thread. You always have a go at @beltrano for posting updates about Michael's streaming numbers.
Well, the chart thread is something different. What beltrano does is literally spam the thread every 30 minutes or so, 24/7, with stuff that isn't interesting, isn't important and isn't discussable, and often the meaning isn't even clear. You'll see that nobody actually replies to them, all it does is clog the thread up and make it hard to read.

If you don't care about the biopic or the music charts, why are you always in those threads, spreading your constant negativity?
Again, negativity is subjective.

But I do find it worth trying to correct stuff like this:

I believe that this is one of the biggest wins of his story. With everything against him, he pulled this off.
It's just, you know, it's not Michael's product. He had no idea about this movie. The way you're talking it's as though he's alive, he created this, and he will benefit from it. But he won't. Michael Jackson is dead, this is simply a bunch of suits profiteering from his name.

I might have had more respect for the movie if they'd made it while he was alive, when he actually needed the publicity.

Oh, whoops, is that me being a hater again?

Strange thing to throw shade about. It’s like people repeat buying Coke or Pepsi, and others moaning “they only buy so much because they enjoy it!”
I know, right? Such a strange thing for people to be obsessed about.

It is not fictional.

Obsessed??? It's an observation. Nothing more. Personally I would be more interested in seeing how many people actually watch the movie, instead of how many dollars it makes. But like I said, in the end only the dollar counts.

As you say, the Bo Rap film wasn’t loved by Queen fans, as they perceived it as being no good. But plenty of people were persuaded into going to see it, by the pro white rock loving media. What a shame they were duped.

MICHAEL seems to be the opposite of that. Hated by the predominantly white media, and loved by the public, who just can’t get enough of the ‘feel good’ factor.

That’s a testament to Jafar doing an amazing job but, more so, the everlasting appeal of MJ and his time defying great music. 👌

Any idea where to find sales numbers for the 'Michael' music album? Would like to know how many copies been sold so far. Especially the audio cassette, since it's a release I did not expect.

It’s still very early for numbers like this.

I know it’s #1 in France with 10,248 units shifted. But No news in breakdown of format.

Michael shifts more CD’s and ‘old school’ formats, as a percentage, than a lot of modern acts though.

I’ll try and get some US and UK sales figures and come back to you.

If beltrano doesn’t beat me to it, that is. 😉😂

Yes. But those are the fans. The ones that go multiple times. What I like to know is how many average people go watch that movie. People who are open minded and not deterred by those damn allegations. With the multiple views that's going on, I feel the Queen movie was way better received by the average audience (who also doesn't mind and is unaware of the fumbled timeline), who are not nesessarily huge Queen fans. Hence the huge dollar number it ended up with. With Michael I feel the huge number is coming from many multiple views. But we'll see the number we end up with to really compare.

I think they did a good job with the dub version.

Is it normal that the film is allready going out of IMAX?

I'm curious in how the upcoming 4 individual Beatles biopics are gonna do. I think they're all going to be released on the same day. I don't see a huge amount of people going to the movie theater to watch all 4. Also is each movie going to play on more than 1 screen at the multiplex? I also wonder if they're going to cover the Stuart Sutcliffe & Pete Best lineup (or The Quarrymen). I know there's an actress for Yoko Ono, but that's the later days.

It gives you a strong indication that the biopic is reaching non-hardcore fans and a new audience when you watch it in theaters. So many young people. Another unknowable indication that it is reaching a new audience is this unprecedented boost in streaming and purchases in his music from the biopic. So far, Queen has really been the benchmark here. In my opinion the only ones who really received a strong and lasting increase in their audience through their biopic. The growth in streaming does not come from existing fans.

You have to consider, BR had 6 months leg that's why it got massive. That's Pre- pandemic cinema as well and oscar winning. The actor also did great. We have to wait Japan and SK too as these were massive in BR also.
