The Official 'Michael' Bio-Pic Thread

I'm curious in how the upcoming 4 individual Beatles biopics are gonna do. I think they're all going to be released on the same day. I don't see a huge amount of people going to the movie theater to watch all 4. Also is each movie going to play on more than 1 screen at the multiplex? I also wonder if they're going to cover the Stuart Sutcliffe & Pete Best lineup (or The Quarrymen). I know there's an actress for Yoko Ono, but that's the later days.
🫠 🫠 🫠 🫠 4? Are they megalomaniac? Oh, shush, bluemoon, that has always been attributed to Michael Jackson, no? :sneaky::sneaky:

Jackson 5 plus siblings, come on!!! 😅🤣

Yes. But those are the fans. The ones that go multiple times. What I like to know is how many average people go watch that movie. People who are open minded and not deterred by those damn allegations. With the multiple views that's going on, I feel the Queen movie was way better received by the average audience (who also doesn't mind and is unaware of the fumbled timeline), who are not nesessarily huge Queen fans. Hence the huge dollar number it ended up with. With Michael I feel the huge number is coming from many multiple views. But we'll see the number we end up with to really compare.

Your deluding yourself (and trying to delude others, it seems).

MICHAEL is blowing up on all formats and is all over instagram, TikTok, etc.
90% of these people weren’t born/old enough even to remember MJ.

These are new, young fans. captivated by his musical and performing genius.

I’ll guess Bo Rap audiences were a lot more ‘niche’. I’ll say, mainly, white rock fans of a certain age. Don’t get me wrong, it’s well known there are millions and millions of white rock fans who love almost anything in that genre and will support it. So it was hugely successful.

What makes MJ’s success do AMAZING, is that he’s doing it DESPITE the media. Whereas Queen and Bo Rap had it largely BECAUSE of their media support.

You do see that, don’t you?

Nah. MJ is, once again, having a lasting impact on the younger generation - 17 years after his death - in a way no other Legacy artist seems to be able to get close to. 💪👏👏🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️

But you keep kidding yourself, if you like. 😉🤣

But, four individual films is four individual budgets and four individual box office figures.

Knowing the white rock dominated media, predominantly full of old men, they will add all 4 together - if they can make out the Beatles‘ film are “more successful than tje Michael Jackson biopic”! 🤔😂😂

Also, I hope Beatles fans don’t go and watch them more than once 😡
That really would be on! 😉🤣

Hi beltrano,

The ‘domestic’ figures for MICHAEL seem to get updated fairly regularly but, not the International’ figures.

Ate the International figures updated weekly, do you know?

It’s still very early for numbers like this.

I know it’s #1 in France with 10,248 units shifted. But No news in breakdown of format.

Michael shifts more CD’s and ‘old school’ formats, as a percentage, than a lot of modern acts though.

I’ll try and get some US and UK sales figures and come back to you.

If beltrano doesn’t beat me to it, that is. 😉😂

Some confirmed figures (first few days/up to 7 days)

France 10,248 - #1
UK 13,244 - #4
USA. 20,000* - #37

👍

You have to consider, BR had 6 months leg that's why it got massive. That's Pre- pandemic cinema as well and oscar winning. The actor also did great. We have to wait Japan and SK too as these were massive in BR also.
Well, the 6 months leg is only relevant if the numbers keep up and the people watching the movie keep coming. I sure do hope they do. And by that the multiple views and repeat customers play a role too.

It gives you a strong indication that the biopic is reaching non-hardcore fans and a new audience when you watch it in theaters. So many young people. Another unknowable indication that it is reaching a new audience is this unprecedented boost in streaming and purchases in his music from the biopic. So far, Queen has really been the benchmark here. In my opinion the only ones who really received a strong and lasting increase in their audience through their biopic. The growth in streaming does not come from existing fans.
Yes. For sure it reaches non hardcore fans too. Have I said it doesn't? The question is how many? None of us really knows what numbers is needed for the streaming to go up in a meaningful way as, like with the movie, it counts the streams, not the people.

For one, I really do NOT appreciate your tone. I'm not deluding myself or anyone.

Maybe it is you who does? 90%? A number totally pulled out of your ass and thin air. But even if the number is debateable, that kinda is my point, young people who weren't born or old enough when he was around. Young and enthusiastic people who not only see a movie once, but multiple times. Young people who became fans since his passing and now get their first chance to witness/be part of an MJ era, even if it is one that really has nothing to do with Michael and is about him instead of with him. And older people, who always were fans. That's what I get from the countless posts and comments I've read all over in the past couple of weeks, including in my own fan group of people, who collectively have seen the real MJ hundreds of times in concert and in person (in that particular group the interest ranges from zero to having seen the movie 7 times in the cinema already) and what I've actually seen with my own eyes at the premiere in Berlin and in the cinema and again countless of reels. I don't think that was the case with the Queen movie (I mean, for sure it applied for some too, but does Queen reach younger people in the way MJ does? I don't think so.), which didn't have to face a general audience that screams pedo, whenever the subject of the movie is mentioned and by that makes the audience way wider and definitely not more niche.

That said, to me the success is not that amazing or surprising. It still is Michael Jackson and fans didn't just go away. The fans, who were actually fans, did stay loyal. It's the fair weather people or people who didn't care too much in the first place that went away. I do wonder though how much of the success is due to people who didn't really care about Michael before and are now going to see the movie, as opposed to people who always were fans and are now showing up over and over. Obviously fans do not give a shit about what the media says and come either way.

And once again, I'm not kidding anyone. I thought, we could have an honest discussion without hostility or ridicule because some don't like what is being said.

Ok. I apologise 👍

I just don’t see why that level of detail matters to some MJ fans, I suppose.

I’m don’t know of any other act where fans forensically dissect their success, like this. Especially when it’s this massive. They just enjoy it. 🤷‍♂️

All good though 👌

I dissect it, because I want a billion people to go watch the movie. Not 100 mio people seeing it a billion times.

I was hoping they'd use Mike's Beat It worktape for the Beat It scene, as it is it just felt a bit flat without the music.

One thing I loved on the latest viewing, was Q's reaction to hearing MJ singing DSTYGE and the transition into the video was great

Haha, my thoughts EXACTLY 🤣

That really would be on! 😉🤣
They would have to go to the movies at least 8 times then lmao!
That would be too much stress for all the (predominantly) old white Beatles fans. 👴👴👴👴👴 whoopsies 🤭

Now this is the perplexing part ...pre pandemic theatrical run was a 90 days window, unless 6 months leg included streaming after the theatre runs, but then again streaming does not add to box office numbers...unless the release is staggered in different countries...um...
