I would not believe them if they said literally everything was destroyed and that's why they're uploading crappy AI upscales. They are known for
being cheap and lazy, and also lying, constantly.

If they were to be honest they would just say they can't be bothered.

Maybe I’d believe them if they said, “We can’t find the reels.” But I’d respond with, “Have you tried asking the directors of the short films? Or maybe just MAYBE looked in other places?”


It seems like they expect everything to be in one specific location, when in reality, I’m pretty sure there are multiple warehouses full of materials. Honestly, they should hire dedicated staff to regularly inspect, catalog, and organize everything in storage.

There is no way they haven't done that.
 
I would urge everyone to watch this BTS for the recent re-release of the film CANNIBAL THE MUSICAL as it goes into detail about the issues with early 90s video masters.


Again! Maybe they DO have the original source negatives lying in storage and are unable or unwilling to scan them (we know they had trims for BAD since we saw them in Spike’s doc). But it also wouldn’t shock me if they said “yeah, no, the original source is gone. Ooopsies!”
 
I can tell you what’s gonna happen:

1. they will say they don’t have access to films
2. they will use tape source for all videos
3. in a future documentary about dangerous or history they will use actual film footage from the short film reels they apparently didn’t have.
4. we will confront them
5. they will ignore us
6. 20 more years will pass
7. end of story
 
So you mean to tell me John Landis has all that extra footage of reels of Thriller with bts & he doesn't have black or white to give to the estate as a copy.

If you watch "THE ONE" dvd, you'll see short films footage in best quality (even for a dvd)... Pls don't lie to us..







You've million dollars equipment, studios, professional video editors, colorists... and using AI - sorry, but it looks like watercolor...

That's so sad, man... imagine the possibilities with professional editing of the original tapes, combined with a little AI. In 10 or 20 years there will be even better options. Hopefully, one day we will get something... trying to live as healthy as possible here to have a chance of seeing them do things in the future 🫠

Yeah believe it or not. Estate always try their best. You are just a stupid kiddo like all fans who doesn’t praise the estate.
 
Having the original footage does not necessarily mean anything. Peter Jackson had the original film footage to The Beatles Let It Be movie, and he DNR'd (removed the film grain) it to the point that everybody looks like wax dummies or video game characters. 😅 Paul, Ringo, Yoko, & Olivia apparently signed off on it to be shown on Disney+.
 
The thing is, the estate has all the money to do these kinds of things and there are certainly a lot of cheap alternatives with a combo of film and upscaled tape that would look brilliant. I mean look at the BBC and their Doctor Who collections: A lot of the earlier 1960s seasons were lost and they recovered a lot of these over the past decades. Although those are all sourced on tape, they try to make them look the best they can with the current technology while being on a relatively small budget, restoring the footage they have properly, without the use of AI

I agree. He shouldn’t have upscaled it like that. I mean upscaling would be fine but I don’t understand why everyone wants to have grain removed. He could have just reduced it.

To be honest, it's entirely believable that they have lost or otherwise can't find what they want.

Consider there must be at least 20,000 individual videotapes of MJs life taken by himself, that's not even including any of his actual work.

That's going to take up some serious space - think a soccer stadium or two. Then there's the high likelihood that in the last 50 years some of it has been damaged in a fire, a flood, or been eaten by mice or insects. Then there's actually trying to find that one tape you need on a particular timescale.

As anybody who ever moved house will tell you, it's just not at all trivial. And no, the estate realistically are not going to pay somebody (ie a large team) to do that.

Probably because the younger generation are used to digital shot movies & TV shows. A lot of old movies are degrained. I think it was done on the Terminator 2 Blu-ray & 4K discs. It's similar to brickwalled mixes on reissues or removing tape hiss from analog recordings.

This is the next level, The AI its powerful in the right escenario, they have access to the new remastered digital master in 6K or so. its a movie almost 100 years in 16K

Some footage I actually believe is lost but don't they have a dedicated person that is in charge of his archive material?

Think about how well fed we would've been by now if the estate gathered Michael's collaborators the year he passed. Sitting down with Quincy, Bruce, Rod, Barnes, Bottrell, Buxer, Rodney, Teddy, Vince, Porcaro, the short film directors and even his brothers.....coming up with plans and ideas to preserve his legacy and working with them to bring as much music and footage together to represent Michael the way he should be remembered but nooooooooooo.

Using logic and giving them ideas won't help with unreliable and dishonest people whose main goal is not to look after Michael's interests. The only way to change their attitude is to generate pressure and criticism on social media. That's just my humble opinion 🙄

If memory serves, it was actually Walter Yetnikoff who had the final reels of Thriller. But, per your question, no, I don't think John Landis has a personal copy of the film or outtakes sitting around his house. That's not how this works...

Again, watch the video I posted above. You'll learn a lot.
 
I feel like some fans are working themselves up over assumptions and hypotheticals, which imo is very weird and kinda unreasonable. There is a VERY fine line between “the estate is cheap and cuts corners which harms their relationship with MJ’s collaborators” and “the estate doesn’t care to regain ownership of material they don’t have.” I’m not even defending them here, it’s just odd.

MJ wasn’t the most contentious with his archival work, and films from the 20th century are lost consistently. Until we hear something that actually flat-out suggests negligence in this case, I’m just gonna presume laziness and conservative spending on the estate’s part.
