In the song she's out of my life what is the instrument that plays during the song? Its very pretty and I kinda want to know what its called.

edit:its really only prominent sounding after the strings end in the beginning. If you have seen the bucharest dangerous tour, it is sounding there too. thanks again! Also it plays in the beginning of the song Childhood from the HIStory album

The only credits I have are:

  • Written and composed by Tom Bahler
  • Produced by Quincy Jones
  • Lead and background vocals: Michael Jackson
  • Bass: Louis Johnson
  • Guitar: Larry Carlton
  • Electric piano: Greg Phillinganes
  • String arrangement by Johnny Mandel
  • Concert master: Gerald Vinci

hmm so its an electric piano....but why does it sound so warm and soft? hmm I'm gonna do some more research on it, but thanks a lot!

on the original recording, it's a Fender Rhodes that's used (greatest instrument ever created lol)

in the Bad and Dangerous Tours, it was a synthesizer called the Yamaha DX7 (used a lot during the late 80s and 90s ballads and easy to carry around for gigs).

and i'm not sure about the beginning of Childhood.. sounds like real acoustic piano layered with some synths..

Now what I want to know is what in the world is a "How Now Brown Cow"? According to the Bad credits Mike plays this.

I think How Now Brown Cow is the name of the group or person that did the percussion. The credits say "Percussion by How Now Brown Cow".

  • Written and composed by Michael Jackson
  • Solo and background vocals: Michael Jackson
  • Percussion - How Now Brown Cow
:)

No, it's listed as an instrument, not a group. The instruments are listed after each person's name like this
Jimmy Smith: blah, blah, blah
The HNBC is listed after Mike's name

thanks for everyone's help so far! Can I get the same type of setting I'm looking for on the fender rhodes?

the Fender Rhodes is what the Yamaha DX7's E. Piano 1 is digitally modeled after - although quite badly..

since the Rhodes isn't a synthesiser (made of steel tines), expensive and quite a b!tch to carry around, most people resorted to the DX7's preset as a substitute and ended up giving it its own sound, defining a period of that 'cheesy' 80s ballad sound.

here's the Rhodes sound:

and the DX7's emulation:

so there are no presets on the Rhodes. you can tweak only a couple of settings on it like Vibrato and Panning but most effects came from outside processing units unlike the DX7's digital inside-the-box effects, making it very versatile.

are you looking to get any of them or their emulations?
