I just heard on the AP that Alan Rickman has died. I know most people here probably know him from the Harry Potter movies, but I fell crazy in love with him in 'Truly, Madly, Deeply.'
I would crush even harder when he was being insufferable or playing the villain. Sexiest Voice ever.
RIP. I will miss him.

Don't forget him as Hans Gruber in some little film called DIE HARD?.

Watched "Truly, Madly, Deeply" again last night, and even though I thought I wouldn't, started crying at the exact same place I always have at the end.

How could I forget him in "Robin Hood"-amazing how many tributes I've read today end with "I will cut your heart out with a SPOON!"

And I was incredibly touched reading the tribute that Paris Jackson left that was posted on 2300 Jackson Street forum-how they loved the Harry Potter books and movies and he was her favorite. So sad that this little girl has written a tribute to her favorite performer now, much like we all have. I'm glad that she loved and appreciated Alan Rickman and that Michael gave her that.

Alan Rickman, who has died at the age of 69 following a private battle with cancer, was a mesmerising screen presence, whether playing the villain, the hero, or simply rock-solid support. While his death is an unexpected blow for British drama, we can at least look back at some of his most memorable appearances on screen…
Hans Gruber - ‘Die Hard’ (1988)

Strangely, it was his role in John McTiernan’s action classic ‘Die Hard’ that proved Rickman’s big-screen break.

A classical theatre actor up to that point – he’d just dazzled critics as Vicomte de Valmont in Les Liaisons Dangereuses both for the RSC and on Broadway,
where he was nominated for a Tony – he showed that he was no elitist, playing to the crowd superbly as the maniacal terrorist leader Hans Gruber. It remains one of his most memorable roles.
Severus Snape – The Harry Potter Series (2001-2011)

It’s perhaps his Severus Snape that Rickman was most synonymous with in recent years, what turned out to be a rich and continually shape-shifting role over all eight of the Harry Potter movies. He played both antagonist and ally to Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry firstly as potion master, and latterly headmaster of Hogwarts. Sneering and deceitful, one could hardly imagine another actor doing Snape the same justice.
Jamie – ‘Truly, Madly, Deeply’ (1990)

A heartbreaking performance from Rickman in the late Anthony Minghella’s celebrated BBC movie, at turns funny, poignant and deeply moving. He played Jamie, the boyfriend of Juliet Stevenson’s Nina, who appears seemingly as a projection of her grief following his death. Pitched perfectly, it won Rickman and Stevenson the BAFTAs for Best Actor and Best Actress that same year.
The Sheriff of Nottingham – ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ (1991)

tumblr_inline_o0y792JYme1tvm1vp_1280.jpg

If there’s been a better Sheriff of Nottingham in any of the adaptations of the Robin Hood story, we’ll eat our hats. Like Gruber, Rickman revelled in the dastardliness of his character, but skirted caricature deftly, while effortlessly holding his own among a star-studded cast which included Kevin Costner, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Christian Slater and Morgan Freeman. He, quite rightly, won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor for his trouble.
Dr Lazarus – ‘Galaxy Quest’ (1999)

tumblr_inline_o0y67lNHqH1tvm1vp_1280.jpg

Rickman sent himself up with aplomb in this much-loved sci-fi spoof, as the classically-trained Shakespearean actor Alexander Dane, brimming with simmering resentment at the fact that he’s been reduced to hackneyed catchphrases and ludicrous prosthetics for his role as the alien Dr. Lazarus in the Galaxy Quest TV series.
Harry – ‘Love Actually’ (2003)

tumblr_inline_o0y68234IC1tvm1vp_1280.jpg

A linchpin of Richard Curtis’s glistening ensemble in the intertwined rom-com 'Love Actually’, Rickman played Harry, the charismatic husband to Emma Thompson’s Karen, who has his head turned by Mia, the new secretary at his design agency. His sterling performance once he is caught out pleasingly avoided sugar-coating the damage such betrayal can have on a relationship, despite his contrition.
Rasputin - ‘Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny’ (1996)

tumblr_inline_o0y79dzmc61tvm1vp_1280.jpg

German director Uli Edel’s superior TV movie of the Rasputin story hinged on Rickman’s dark and brooding portrayal of the debauched 'mad monk’ who climbed his way to power and infamy during the reign of Tsar Nicholas II (played by Sir Ian McKellen). It was a lavish production, winning Rickman both an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Die Hard, Robin Hood (91) and Galaxy Quest are the movies I've watched Alan in the most. I'm not a Harry Potter fan, so I haven't seen him in them.

Rest in Peace, Alan...
