This is sad news to share. My dear friend- extraordinarily talented music producer, Bryan Loren has passed away 😔🙏🏽 He would have been 59 this year.
@shaniceonline and I had breakfast this weekend with Bryan’s brother, Geno, who delivered the sad news to us (swipe to see a pic from that meeting)Bryan produced Shanice’s debut album, which made Michael Jackson his biggest fan.
As Geno so beautifully wrote in his announcement:
“My brother was his father’s son… a brilliant musician who lived his life unapologetically. His talent was ELITE, and his character was true… given the gift, and he left his mark on the world.”-
I personally met Bryan in 1991 when he was working with Michael. I was working for Michael’s managers at the time, and Bryan came in for a meeting. We exchanged numbers and instantly became the best of friends.
Michael would often drive to Bryan’s house in Woodland Hills and record music in his basement studio. I remember they even spent a Thanksgiving together- just two guys, laughing, creating, talking about girls, cartoons, and life. Bryan wrote and played every instrument on “Do The Bartman” for The Simpsons. Bryan and MJ bonded because they were both young musical geniuses who loved nerdy things.
I’ll never forget the time MJ called me at work, in 1993, and said he had just written a song for his unreleased short film “Is This Scary” (that he eventually cast me in) and asked if he could dictate the lyrics to me so I could write them down and rush them to Sony. He kept me on the phone for nearly an hour, line by line. The song was called “Family Thing.”

Later that night, I told Bryan about MJ’s call- he just laughed. He told me HE had actually written the lyrics for MJ, who was being pressured by Sony for the song. I still have those handwritten pages from that call ❤️

MJ 1st became a fan of Bryan’s after hearing Shanice’s debut album -stunned that Bryan had written, produced, and played everything on it…at just 19 years old! His talent was on the level of Prince. Truly rare.

Rest easy, B 🤍Thank you for the decades of memories, the laughter, the stories, and the music. 🙏🏽❤️

R.I.P. to yet another MJ collaborateur who was extremely talented. Another one who the estate didn't work with on all the tons of unreleased material from their sessions together. The potentials of reworking demos, remastering, showing session work, footage, documentation, etc.

Could've done so much with him as they could with all of the other MJ collaborators who have died post 2009. They just miss chances after chances. And the rest of the "cast" probably don't have that much time left either because they are all getting old.

Sort of egoistic take from me from an MJ fan perspective, but it is what it is.

Agreed. His collaborators are holding on to some of the most sought after material and the estate refuses to strike a deal. We're losing.

when it came to loren, the estate wanted nothing to do with him professionally after the dangerous 25 talks, they went so bad that Karen said they'd never work with HIM specifically, meaning in a grotesque way, loren's passing means his work will be looked into.

That man knew his & his materials worth and took that worth to the grave, i hope to god whoever runs his estate keeps the same mindset.

This is likely true, but I'm curious how Loren's estate will play into this. I recall him living alone in a less than nice townhouse about 10 years ago or so, with his finances not being all that great (I'd imagine the way this was addressed played into his meeting with the estate). Also, as far as I'm aware, he didn't have any kids, so the master sessions and all that are probably with another family member I'd assume. The MJ estate does have some copies of certain songs, but to what degree that extends is unknown.

So the mj estate will release mj songs with loren?

I'm sad for him that he didn't have his "full circle" moment, with a spot on Michael or Xscape, what with whatever happened to him allegedly being blacklisted by the Estate (I believe?). He seemed so bitter about certain things to do with his work associated with MJ. I don't think he came across very well at times in the past few years, but I was hopeful for a resolution for his name to be attached to some upcoming MJ releases that may have been able to include the work he did.

Superfly Sister will always be one of my favourites. Thanks, Bryan.

It’s also worth noting something little known about Bryan’s work with MJ in that he was originally the musical director for the Dangerous Tour. Those tapes we have of the 1992 rehearsals are all Bryan and Brad on keys.

It was only when (in the nicest way possible) they realised Bryan didn’t really have the chops to be able to carry the full live gig that he was cut and they brought in Greg something like 3 days before opening night.

No doubt that contributed to the less than favourable opinions Bryan seemed to display in later life over his MJ experiences.

Thaaat would explain why he didn't like Brad Buxor, unless there's even more studio politics that contributed to it.

I've never heard of this before! Where is this screenshot even from?

But I believe it, the person in Greg's position in the rehearsal tapes doesn't seem to have the same build as him.

Rest in peace. Not a fan of any of the songs he produced for MJ, but he was definitely talented. Shame he didn't have more success in the industry.

The songs with Bryan Loren don't sound quite as polished as the songs that made it onto Dangerous. But that's okay, because they have personality and character. By the way, who played the guitar solo on Superfly Sister? Seems like it was Bryan Loren:
"Superfly Sister" was eventually completed at the Record Plant for Blood on the Dance Floor in 1997, with Loren adding the guitar solo

rip

A few interesting facts from the interview with Bryan Loren:
Loren wrote the rap in BoW, but wasn't credited.
D.S. sounds like a track Loren wrote. He worked with Michael on Money and is on the record.
Loren talks about the Cascio tracks.
Mottola made Michael cry during the production of Dangerous.
In this week’s exclusive interview, Jamon, who is hosting solo, welcomes Season 4’s first musical collaborator special guest, Bryan Loren.
