Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque Du Soleil in Las Vegas - My Review

Freddy Sherman, Yahoo! Contributor Network

As a forty-something music fan, I grew up listening to Michael Jackson and I associate his music with milestones in my life. While in Las Vegas recently, I had a chance to see the MIchael Jackson ONE show by Cirque du Soleil at Mandalay Bay. The show is a brilliant blending of the King of Pop's iconic songs (and image) with the acrobatics and stunning presentation I expect of Cirque du Soleil.

The show
Using a group of four young adventurer characters, backed and joined by 63 dancers, the show takes the audience through various Michael Jackson hits, performing or acting out the lyrics and themes from the songs. Directed by a former Michael Jackson backup dancer, Jamie King, ONE really does bring the songs to life and enhance the experience of hearing them. It's like you're actually part of a giant Michael Jackson music video. There is a lot of cool technology used, lighting, lasers, video walls, everything works together to improve the experience, not distract from it.

The music
This show is all about the music of Michael Jackson and it delivers hit after hit. Michael's music and dancing is so good, I think they could sell tickets to a show that was just that, watching him perform on giant screens. The sound system in the theater is also excellent, so there's a great surround sound effect and the music is crisp and clear, adding to the overall sensory experience.

The Cirque du Soleil influence
This is a all-encompassing, three dimensional experience. Dancers and aerial artists perform overhead as the music plays and they also move back and forth above the crowd on all kinds of amazing mechanical systems built into the theater. The entire stage show is also acrobatic, with large ferris wheel-like machines, trampolines in the floor and other devices that magnify the dancers' already brilliant abilities.

I really liked some of the "clothesline" dances they did on bouncy ropes stretched across the stage. Another stand-out was a line of dancers wearing black outfits with LED displays on them. The row of LED displays was computer-controlled and as the dancers performed Michael's moves, the LED lights framed and highlighted some of them, then all of them and back and forth. The effect, with the music, was really cool and a great combination of great human dancing with computer technology..

Memories of Michael
The dancers in the show are amazing, and many of them perform some of Michael's signature moves as part of the show choreography. But one thing that stayed with me after the show was watching the videos of Michael himself performing, which were beautifully woven into the overall performance. To watch him dance, moonwalk, everything, is just so amazing and you realize what a true genius he really was..

An amazing, overall entertainment experience
I was really blown away by how well everything came together, the music, the Cirque aspect, the dancers and the overall visual artistry. I also liked how the show appeals to all ages, it's a great family activity in Vegas.

Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil at Mandalay Bay
The Michael Jackson ONE show is in its own theater, easily accessible inside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino . There are two 90-minute shows nightly, 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. (7:30 and 9:30 after August 29) and the show is dark Thursdays and Fridays. Ticket prices start at a reasonable $69 each, with Gold Circle tickets starting at $180 each.

Tip
For a great overnight experience, try THEhotel , the stylish 43-story, all-suite "hotel within a hotel" at the Mandalay Bay. The Michael Jackson ONE theater is right near the hallway leading the THEhotel lobby.

I do not remember seeing those shirts in May. I wonder if they are new or I just missed it. Where did you find popcorn & a drink? It seems there is more stuff in there than I thought. I guess now I have to get these shirts.

Jaydom popcorn and drinks are pricy in the cinemas too, and you are not even there to see a live show.

Re: Cirque du Soleil "Michael Jackson ONE" permanent Las Vega show

For those of you that have not seen it and are cirque fans.. When going know that you are going to primarily a dance show. Its a different approach than other cirque shows and there would be a slight change it would not live to your expectation..

If you go in expecting to see a lot of dancing, great sound/music than you will lovvee it.. Its a great show, I personally was expecting a little more cirque flavor.

So far it seems it seems it more than lived up to expectations. And I don't mean just MJ fans. Many well respected Las Vegas critics (such as Robin Leach, who is not known to hide his opinion if he doesn't like something) described it as Cirque's best show yet.

It got great reviews because its a great show.. When I said there's a chance if you go in expecting a cirque type show it may slightly not live to expectations its because exactly that..

Cirque shows traditionally have much more grand stunts, and more theatrical.. ONE is a great dance show is some acrobatics, and great music and scenery.

Its just not what a traditional cirque fan Would expect a different type of production..

Might not be the best example but let's say you are a Tim Burton fan and you expect that darker approach to a film and it was a great movie but was pretty different tham what you'd expect from him.

I would imagine before someone goes to a performance he would inform themselves about what type of show he can expect. Cirque doesn't just have their traditional acrobatics shows any more. Several shows (not just the MJ show) are centered around dance. I have heard a lot more complaints about Immortal because of this. Apparently ONE is so mind-blowing that people usually come away more than satisfied. And if they want more traditional Cirque acrobatics, then well, they should choose another Cirque show to visit. It wouldn't make sense if all Cirque shows would be the same or similar.

Lol OK... You don't like my statement I get it!

Its not just my opinion either but whatever..

^^I don't think she does not like your statement. I felt she was saying something like Cirque has moved or evolved in the way they do their shows, so that they are not centering on mainly one type of genre type anymore. Due to this, several Cirque fans have now seen different types of Cirque productions where they do not merely focus on grand theater. Of course they will always have the acrobats because that is the core of their dance form, and their productions will change depending on the music or story they are telling. Everyone knows this is a show with an artist's music, and the artist is known for his dancing and singing. He also has signature moves. That alone will make people expect a different type of show. Even the show title Michael Jackson ONE tells them it is about Michael Jackson. I think this is good. Cirque should not stay stagnant and do the same types of productions all the time. It is like an artist who always plays a mom in a movie.

I agree with you that people who go to see the shows like you describe, if they are only excited by those types of shows, then One may not be their ideal. However, seeing Michael on the poster and his name should give them a clue that it is not about a warrior fighting with swords, for example.

Re: Cirque du Soleil "Michael Jackson ONE" permanent Las Vega show

Hi friends!

I landed yesterday in Las Vegas and checked into Mandalay Bay. At check in I got a lovely gift bag with a really nice souvenir program for MJOne, A poster signed by the cast, a t-shirt...

And an invitation!!

From the looks of the invitation, people who will be there include:

John Branca
Jamie King
Rich + Tone Talauega
Greg Phillinganes

This must be the surprise, as well as Joe Vogel signing today. I picked up my copy of Man in the Music yesterday, I will bring it back to be signed today.

The MJOne shop is just as overwhelming as I thought it would be, but I feel so at home there... just wanted to buy everything!

Re: Cirque du Soleil "Michael Jackson ONE" permanent Las Vega show

If the surprise is that the executor of the MJ Estate, the creative director, the musical director, and two of the choreographers are going to attend the show then that's a disappointment IMO.

I think there will be another surprise.....

I'll keep my fingers crossed that a real surprise happens. Please post asap if something happens (e.g. any big announcements etc)

Whatever happens, enjoy the show!! Wish I could be there!!

It's not a surprise that they are at one of the shows, it is a surprise that they are willing to do a meet and greet with fans. I think it's really nice, and personally, I am just happy and grateful to be here and to be meeting them.

Also, after opening, generally directors and those involved with a production do not go to see it. They would go to the opening after previews, but once a run starts, people have other projects to do and they can't be going to one show all the time. So I think it's nice they've taken the time to come back.

Looks like everybody is seeing the early show. My only disappointment is that I got a ticket for the later show, so while all the fans are getting together for dinner after the early show, I have to miss out :( I haven't met any other fans.

There's a few clips on Youtube, nothing special.. still cool to see!

Re: Cirque du Soleil "Michael Jackson ONE" permanent Las Vega show

I feel I could cry I am so disappointed. Everybody was crowded with fans and I couldn't get near them, I was just waiting my turn. But then Travis Payne showed up. There were so many people, and they all kept cutting in on me, I wanted to talk to him. I wanted to tell him all that Immortal meant to me, but finally I got my moment as his manager came to take him away and gave him a tissue.

He was so sweet and gracious, it was obvious he was trying to get away. But he have me a quick greeting and even asked me where I was from. But with his two managers there, I could tell I was keeping him.

I got to hug him, biut not say what I wanted to. i really wanted him to sign my picture of Michael and Mandela, but he got whisked away. I know I shouldn't, but I can't help crying. By the time this all happened, everybody had left.

Joe Vogel was so kind to me, he signed my book and even let me take a picture of him with holding a picture of Michael and Mandela for the tribute.

I was so excited... never thought it would end in tears.

Re: Cirque du Soleil "Michael Jackson ONE" permanent Las Vega show

 My pic of Joe Vogel with the pic of Mandela is so blurry, you can't even see the picture he's holding. My picture of me with Travis Payne is bad and blurry too  If only I was pushier, I would have met him before he had to run.
