Controversial MJ Documentary Leaving Neverland [GENERAL DISCUSSION THREAD]

so there are still lawsuits from wade and james against the estate, correct? when will there be a decision on this?

there is no reason to let this go through. so i am waiting for the dismissals of both lawsuits.

The lawsuit is in the appeal.
It's a lawsuit against MJJ Vendures and MJJ Productions for responsibility.
Normaly the decison will be between 7/2019 - 1/2020.
That's what I know.

Unfortunately I think it's for the best that we don't kick up a stink about this. Don't support it, don't go watch it... that's fine. But Michael has enough bad publicity right now. We have a bigger fight on our hands. A fight that we are clearly fighting alone.

Agree. Sometimes the fans give things to much attention and publicity. Let it hopefully fade into oblivion.

the MJ Estate has to produce a credible show for the wide audience as well as the core fan base if they want a mainstream success (and they do!). Therein lies the problem.

The fan base do NOT want any mention of allegations in this production at all. they want the focus to be on the music, dance etc. It's understandable.

Clearly the MJ Estate thinks it's ok for the "dark side" to be mentioned as long as the show "celebrates" MJ, LOL.

Let's be realistic. The press and general public alike will be highly critical of a production that they perceive to white wash the troubles they believe are real, and sadly much of the Chandler, Robson, Safechuck business fits firmly within the time period covered by the show.

The MJ Estate should make a SERIOUS EFFORT to very publicly debunk these allegations in very specific and certain terms BEFORE the broadway show hits the stage. If they don't want to do that themselves then they should support Taj and others to do so on their behalf. That way they can avoid lay the foundations for what hopefully would be a more understanding audience.

BUT if during the "celebration" of MJ the show MUST mention the "dark side" then it MUST mention the extortion, the inaccurate press, AND the forced settlement. In that way the show itself can assist in debunking the allegations in a way the MJ Estate can control very well, but to do so would go beyond the planned time period of the show, which was the lead up to the Dangerous tour (rehearsals etc) and into the tour itself. Ultimately I guess the show would then need to end with the cancellation of the tour. not ideal.

What I'm wondering is, how are they even going to cover that in a musical? Will the person playing Michael re-enact where Michael told people all over the world he was innocent back in the 90s? I just can't picture how they will cover that in a musical.

I can't imagine that the estate are gonna go along with the "dark side" of MJ because you're pretty much just giving in to the whole thing and might as well just cancel your whole lawsuit against HBO altogether.

If you guys think this broadway musical is going to be a big MJ bash fest you are seriously delusional. Read between the lines guys. Did you even read the big New York Times article? These two individuals are clearly caught in the middle. They love MJ and respect him, they love his music. But they are highly respected people in their field and in this sensitive MeToo movement they are trying to stay neutral. In the NYT article both clearly state they don't have an opinion as to whether MJ was guilty or not. They pray that he is innocent. This broadway musical is going to be about Michael Jackson the musician, dabbling at times in controversy but that could turn out to be a good thing if they do it right. Im giving it the benefit of the doubt because what other options do we have? I'd rather have an award winning critically flawless show over a crappy tone deaf musical that just focuses on rainbows and lollipops.

If it is includes the LIES the accusers did and told in courth and how witnesses werr PAID to lie by tabloid, then I will see the open mind to it; if not, do not deal with none of it. But again, I do not see why 2 liars can come with a money motivated doc who lies have been even more revealed that will overstep what went on in 2005 and below. I do not get it.

I am sure there are some fans who want rainbows and lollipops.

I am all for a story that is complex and nuanced. It just cannot be ambiguous about whether Michael was a monster who made good music.

Explore his flaws, his mistakes, his human frailties. But do not let being a possible child molester be a part of the narrative.

"A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything" grow some balls and educate yourself or stop riding on the coat tails and taking money off someone who you think is a child rapist.. no morals whats so ever. And the estate is a joke for caring more about $ than mj.

I remember during the molestation trial the cops found a pictures of the Taj and brothers in photo shoot with Michael and they had their shirts off and they police tried to get them come forward as victims against their uncle because of the pictures that the cops made big deal of. Diane Dimond even tried to say there were victims on tv. Sneddon and Dimond
are and will always be trash.

I wouldn't read too much into it.
If they will include it in a musical, it will be in an artistic way. Just like Michael did it in the Leave Me Alone video.
There's no point in making a musical about him, and within that really putting him in a negative light...

They are not caught in the middle. Did you not read when she said "I believe they are telling the truth" about Wade and James? They should not be anywhere near an MJ project. Do not try and make this about fans only wanting to see "rainbows and lollipops". I do not care if the musical turns out great or not. People who think MJ raped kids should not be making it.

Even more when you only need to check a little of the latest updates and you see how full of shit these two liars are. Anyone that still believes them need their damn heads checked.

This people who have the crative control on this musical needs to get fired! Period!
When they find James and Wade belivable and think MJ meight be guilty of molesting children they have not understood him neighther his work and what it was all about!
When they have doubts in their head about his guilt it will influence everthing in the cretive process to bring this musical on stage.
They never will bring the real Michael Jackson magic on stage like they should do it!

The work needs do be done from peole who are 100 percent loyal people who belive in Michael innocence and have understand the purity and the meaning of his work (what was not only about dancing on stage and whriting sucessful music)!

The crazy article from MJFacts / MJand boys who called most of the young Jackson Family Members a possible victim including Taj and Brandi Jackson is

"Michael Jackson’s suspicious relationships with his young*relatives"

and they start whriting it on march 10 2019

Diane Dimond basically threatened Taj. She replied to him and said he should watch himself. Can this bitch just **** off already and get a life?

No kidding. I'm amazed she got hired by anyone with that shitty attitude of hers. If that attitude spilled over into her parenting then I feel so sorry for her kid.

An album with fake songs, 2 lacklustre Spike Lee documentaries, a tasteless hologram performance and now this. They just don't get it.

Didn't realize there were fans that disliked Bad25. I think that and the accompanying album were the best things put out under the Estate. Haven't seen the OTW one so I can't comment on that.

I know you're trying to be positive but it's hard to be when the two people writing the show seem to be leaning towards the negative and could potentially put said doubts into this show. The most we can hope for at this point is that the Estate forces them not to put such things in the show. Or the media is trolling us again and these two never actually said such things (it feels like the media is doing this to us a lot lately; report something, get us outraged, and then it turns out what they reported wasn't true but WE look like the bad ones).

Debating the new Michael Jackson musical: Why are respected artists participating?
Chris JonesContact Reporter
Chicago Tribune

Incredibly, the dangerously titled Michael Jackson musical, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” is moving forward in New York. Its creators are using what I’ll call the complexity defense. It’s fascinating and has implications far beyond Jackson and his legacy.

First, let’s review. The Tribune first reported Jan. 23 that the Broadway-bound musical, a jukebox biography focused around Jackson’s “Dangerous” world tour, would try out in Chicago this fall. That engagement subsequently was cancelled, seemingly in the immediately wake of the HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland,” wherein two adult males, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, claimed, in withering detail, that the so-called King of Pop had abused them at his Neverland ranch when both were underage boys. However, the producers of the show, which include the Jackson estate, claimed that the cancellation was a result of a workshop session being delayed by a now-resolved dispute involving Actors Equity. Whatever the truth, the timing was certainly striking.

This week, though, news came that the show was, as promised, continuing to wend toward Broadway in 2020, albeit without an out-of-town engagement.

You can see why the Jackson Estate, which has attacked the allegations in the documentary as baseless, financially motivated slander, wants the project to continue. Many recent cases involving revelations or allegations of past abusive or inappropriate behavior have resulted in fevered debate over how to handle the disgraced individual’s previous works of art. Is it still OK to watch early Miramax films in the wake of Harvey Weinstein? What about the films of Kevin Spacey? Those are merely the two most obvious examples of countless actors, directors, writers and painters under new scrutiny.

But those are works in the past. In this case, the Jackson musical is yet unfinished. It is in the future. It is one thing to argue that the brilliant artistry of, say, Jackson’s album “Off the Wall” is not invalidated by the artist’s personal behavior, but another to actually create a whole new work around his brand. Estates, though, are trusted with both curating and maximizing creative projects building on the work of deceased artists, further defining their legacy. If “Don’t Stop” were to be cancelled, it would put a chill on any and all future Jackson projects. So wherever you stand on this issue, their persistence is logical.

And it explains why, say, Louis C.K. keeps wanting to do stand-up. There are two debates there, too. There is one set of arguments surrounding the dispensation of Louis C.K. in the past, and another surrounding what he should or should not do be allowed to do in the future. And for those who argue for so-called “cancellation,” it is the future work that is the more egregious.

Look at the recent scandals surrounding racially insensitive statues or murals in schools, depicting very different Americas from the past. Debate ensues about whether they should be removed. Imagine, though, that someone had suggested painting a new one. In the old way.

So what about Lynn Nottage and Christopher Wheeldon, the two creative artists charged with the Jackson project? In recent days, both have given interviews in which they try to thread a very fine needle. In the case of Nottage, the book-writer, she first told Baz Bamigboye of the Daily Mail that she “believed” Robson and Safechuck, following a now-common edict that reflects the argument that survivors of abuse historically have had great difficulty in being heard, and, therefore, now deserve to be believed. “I think they were telling the truth,” she said.

Which begs the question: Why then are you participating in a musical produced by an estate that is calling the two men liars?

The statement also infuriated Jackson fans, who called for Nottage to be fired. And, presumably, it upset the estate, given their public statements on the matter. Then, in a judicious subsequent interview with the New York Times, Nottage walked that back: “What I was saying, and what I was getting at,” she told Michael Paulson, “is that the men came across as very believable. But here’s the caveat: Were they ultimately telling the truth? I cannot 100 percent say so, because I’m not judge and jury, and it’s not my place to do that.”

That is a fair point: the documentary was not a court of law and its content, most fair-minded people would say, did not rise to the level of legal proof. And the accused had no chance to defend himself. But then again, very few of the recent cases discussed above have been fully resolved in a court of law. Weinstein is about to stand trial. But his detractors have not waited for a verdict to condemn. It is hard to imagine someone now making a musical about him, or his auteurship, or anyone buying a ticket.

In the Times interview, both Nottage and Wheeldon essentially said, look, trust us, we’re artists, we understand complexity, none of us are wholly good or wholly bad and we’re going to create an art work that reflects both those sides of Michael Jackson, a show that could be enjoyed by those who believed the young men’s accounts and those who took Jackson’s side. In other words, a complicated, truthful show that will reveal a fuller vision of Jackson.

To wit.

Wheeldon: “This is obviously challenging — it makes this not without its complications, for sure — but part of what we do as artists is we respond to complexity.”

Nottage: “I see the artwork that we’re making as a way to more deeply understand Michael Jackson and process feelings, and ultimately that’s what theater can do.”

I’ve long argued to young writers that critics should always be on the side of complexity and resist binary thinking, life being otherwise and human flaws and hidden agendas existing at every turn. Still, I’ve been wrestling mightily with whether I think these are fair arguments — as distinct from rationalizations from otherwise progressive artists now in a difficult set of circumstances — and whether it is even remotely possible for a musical featuring Michael Jackson songs to be, in Wheeldon’s words, “a show that’s balanced.“

There are several thorny issues. One is that the permission, the dispensing of grand rights, and much of the content of the artists’ paychecks, is coming from an estate that does not share this view, at least in public. Is it really going to allow any suggestion otherwise in the final product? There is no evidence that it will.

The second is that for “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” to be a hit, it will have to rely on Jackson fans, and it will have to give them a good time. Many people now feel that it is inappropriate, given these allegations, to dance or sing along with music inherently tainted by biography. That is a very reasonable position.

Certainly, no jukebox show authorized by a living artist or an estate has ever dealt with anything quite like this. In Broadway biographies, peccadilloes and mistakes sometimes get a brief airing (as in “Summer, the Donna Summer Musical,” involving the subject’s controversial comments about gays), but they are quickly resolved. In an authorized voice. And then back to the dance party.

If the Jackson estate actually allows Nottage and Wheeldon to even hint at anything in “Leaving Neverland” in “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” that would make this the most remarkable jukebox musical in the history of Broadway.

On the other hand, what choice does the estate have?

From its point of view, cancellation would be far worse, putting a chill on the Jackson brand that might last for decades or forever. If they’re smart, they’ll let these two do what they feel they should. And as for Nottage and Wheeldon, they’re now under a moral obligation to at least partly sink their teeth into the hand that feeds them.

What did Corey say and is backtracking on? I’m confused.

Apparently he said he was exactly the type for MJ and he will never know if he was being groomed too. Let's just close the door on Corey from now on, this is ridiculous.

Check out @truthgrace19’s Tweet: https://twitter.com/truthgrace19/status/1121478735071301632?s=09

He went from him completely defending him, always saying he wasn't that kind of person to this. We know MJ took him under his wing when things went bad for him, when he was on drugs etc. Another "friend" who's really just an opportunist.

Just look at this tweet from 2017, talking about defending someone!!!

Check out @kjngofpops’s Tweet: https://twitter.com/kjngofpops/status/1121491176513769472?s=09

Just read a few tweets by TSCM and I never knew his flipflopping was this bad though, wow.

Corey has always been two-faced. In 05 he did Bashir interview to cause salacious headlines and rumors during trial ("Corey says MJ showed him nude photos when a teen!") - was non-story about a medical book he supposedly found & then weeks later Corey said he was duped by Bashir.

During the freaking trial of all times too!!!!

Did you read her twitter reaction though?

I had similar opinion in the beginning, even suggested to wait for confirmation if she even said what's quoted, because it doesn't make sense to alienate potential public. But obviously she did, and she reacted VERY unprofessionally about it on her twitter (blocking people and playing the victim instead of simply clearing things up). I really wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt (and I always gave it to the Estate until now actually), partly because I'm really fed up with the drama, but it doesn't look good at all (e.g. Dan Reed is proudly quoting her now to support his agenda :/).

But they are highly respected people in their field and in this sensitive MeToo movement they are trying to stay neutral.
If they are really independent they should state their opinion freely and openly though, not being wishy-washy in order to adapt it to what they think meets the public opinion. So no, that's not a sign of anything great at all, just follower mentality and lack of courage.

And I'm fed up with people being wishy-washy about MJ, as it's a clear situation: if all accusers lied then MJ is falsely accused and therefore innocent, no need for the "we'll never know" bullshit. And if you think the accusers are credible than you clearly don't know much about the cases.

BTW the Estate's response is unprofessional as well: it's not the fans they should criticize and convince, it's the writers who should be authentic and convincing - if they are not, that's a problem. And it should have been THEIR job to avoid controversy to begin with, not questioning the fans why don't just accept every drama.

I wasn't aware of this. Were you guys? This was the real Michael Jackson!

Michael Jackson made sure fans stranded in New York after 9/11 had a safe place to stay and enough money to take care of themselves, leaving his credit cards with security who checked in on them every day. He even had them drive down to his hotel in New Jersey. https://t.co/Co2P4SOjFI

Brenda Harvey Richie tweeted yesterday

When I was in the hospital after surgery and again after procedures Michael was there everyday trying to help. The doctors and nurses could not believe it. He was my ROCK! I am the LUCKY ONE! ???

Yes he gave his room to some fans to stay he after he left to go to new jersey. Security would come up to the hotel to check on fans as we used it as a meeting point after 911 and fans would pass each others numbers on so calls were made arpund the world from one to the other as not many ppl had mobiles that would work in the usa back then .we spent time out there at his hotel before obviously as mj was inside but after 911 it was used to make sure everyone was ok while waiting for flights home.

Even more when you only need to check a little of the latest updates and you see how full of shit these two liars are. Anyone that still believes them need their damn heads checked.

If any regular joe had this much lying going on in court or anywhere, he or she would be viewed innocent and everyone would move on and leave it alone. But look, these people tell one lie after the other; and when expose, some media (like Oprah and others) want to spin it. I have never seen people who want someone to be guilty so bad when all evidence point to being innocent from liars.
