Dangerous 2LP 33RPM & SACD announced

except the Vocal Version and Instrumental iirc
The vocal version is clean of most clipping in the lead, yes.
The instrumental straight up has neither clipping or most of the distortion on the guitar.

So in order of most affected it would be like
1. Album (both lead and guitar dist)
2. Vocal Version (just guitar dist)
3. Instrumental (clean)

Again, I've already checked all versions yesterday looking specifically for this. Yall are not gonna argue with me over this lol

Soooo... should I be considering returning this or...?

if you want a good sounding release yes, the original CD and Vinyl sounds 100x better than this and probably still will be the best official sounding version to have ever been released in the next 100 years

I‘m a collector and because of that I‘ll keep mine (when it arrives in September)

Is there anything on the SACD that surpasses any previous release?

Nothing except dynamic range but that doesn't matter as long as the master and transfer isn't right. The overall mastering really sucks and is the worst one of all so far, the first two tracks are louder in one channel making them imbalanced and Will You Be There is a faulty transfer that was done with Dolby NR although it shouldn't have been done and distorts the audio in the intro. After I heard all of these I remastered and fixed the whole album and now I can say I have the definitive best version of the album to listen to

Would be nice to have some clarity on whether there are actually any problems with the vinyl release or if it's just the SACD.

some comments from SH forums:

So I got my SACD (#440) and took a listen.

As others have mentioned, "Jam" has a problem. I noticed this on the vinyl copy they sent me as well, compared to the original LP pressing and a Japanese 1991 CD version I have.

"Who Is It" is the clear winner of the set. They've really properly mastered this track now. I'd say "Keep The Faith" actually benefits the most, but I simply prefer the former track mentioned. "Will You Be There" is excellent as well.

Of the New Jack Swing tracks, "Why You Wanna Trip On Me" is the most improved. Raised his backing vocals a good amount.

So a mixed bag. Didn't notice any difference with "Remember The Time", to my disappointment.

After listening to the SACD and comparing to the original 1991 CD, I can say that I prefer the MFSL for Why You Wanna Trip on Me, In the Closet, Can't Let Her Get Away, and Who Is it. For the rest of the tracks, they didn't sound poor on the MFSL, but they had all the energy sucked out of them. The Original CD is fairly harsh at times, so for the songs mentioned I didn't mind having them sound a bit more tame, but for the rest, I can't in good conscience recommend them (especially at that price mark).

Yeah but its insane you have to do anything to something youve already paid €50+ for! Thanks for your info, appreciate it.

I ripped and compared both 1991 and 2025 (and later remastered the DSD to be the best sounding of all), Black Or White, Who Is It, Give In To Me, Keep The Faith, She Drives Me Wild and Can't Let Her Get Away were the songs closest to the original but a very tiny bit worse. The others are a significant amount worse/dull sounding

If i ever get it I'll hear for myself. Seen people say it sounds good and also that it's the worst thing ever lol.

Me getting it will be decided by whether they do anything about the issues, though.

I was gonna get the vinyl so that's why I'm mostly interested in that.

you can get an original Holland pressing for cheaper and that is the absolute best pressing of the album

This is all very disappointing, so I'm just going to wait for the official response from Mofi as to whether the issues will be corrected or if they will play the "this is how we got the tapes" card

The imbalance could be sourced from a faulty transfer. "Mind in the magic" from the Siegfried & Roy cd album has channel imbalance, too.

Yeah but that's easily fixed by rising the volume of one channel and they haven't even done that

Tbh I don't expect any significant improvement on the Dangerous sacd except its higher resolution.

Dangerous is the first album in Michael's catalogue that was produced for a cd medium. And it was propperly mastered, too.

I don't need it to sound exactly like the original release to enjoy it. Thriller and OTW didn't either and I thought those were great. But yeah the issues need to be fixed.

well... the album was originally recorded to analog tape but then immediately transferred to digital tape, with the final mix laid back onto analog, except for Heal the World and Keep the Faith, which remained fully digital tape. Because of that, all tracks are effectively capped at 44.1kHz, and anything above that is just noise and artifacts.

Yeah but Off The Wall and Thriller at least sounded good, Dangerous doesn't sound good at all except a couple trakcs which sound closer to the original. Of course can't say how the vinyl sounds but it uses the same source as the SACD

Please be so kind and describe how the past MoFi releases sound to your ears compared to their original counterparts (OTW & Thriller).

Because there are people who state the same opinion as you do in regards to Dangerous, about those past releases..

It’s all funny to me. We have some audiophile experts in here..
and like I said some days ago, we really have the guys who believe that their fan mastering / mixing is superior to anything else..

And I‘m not talking in regards to legitimate issues with the release. If there are issues they need to be fixed - by the responsible company, namely MoFi.

It‘s been a while but I‘ll try my best:

Thriller has less punch, it is more warm and sounds definitely wider and „different“ than the previous masters. I still prefer the 1999 SACD master as this one is the best sounding version to my ears when comparing each master.

My ranking would be:
1. 1999 SACD
2. 2001 SE / 2022 SACD
3. pre-2001 CD masters
4. 2008

Off The Wall sounds closer to the original than Thriller. The songs with the most significant changes were Don‘t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, Rock With You and Get On The Floor from what I remember. With all of their releases, they try to make the sound of each song consistant with the entire album, which makes those more punchy, detailed songs less immersive.

My ranking would be:
1. 2001 SE
2. 2024 SACD
3. any 1985-1999 Master
4. 1983 CD
5. 2015

(and just because something is on 3 or 4 doesn‘t mean it‘s a bad master, just that I have one or two more reasons that another is above it, at the end of the day it‘s all subjective, clearly the guys at MoFi like a warmer sound)

When I want to listen to an album, I listen to my own remaster which matches closely to the original master tape and or later changes purposefully made.

Hmm... I really shouldn't have jumped the gun on this. >.< I think I'll wait and see what they say about a fix, if any.

Granted, I do have Dangerous on vinyl already, but it's the one from the official MJ store. Not sure how good that is compared to, well, anything.

the original pressing sounds better than the 2015 but it‘s not such a huge difference like Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad

Is the Holland master different than in the other European/American pressings ?

well every vinyl does sound different due to different pressing plants and master tape copies as source
