US Celebrities Rally to the Cause
Stars including Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts and Will Smith will take part in an unprecedented US TV telethon that will be broadcast on all the major networks this Friday.
Further to the news that Michael Jackson is producing a charity single to aid victims of last week's terrorist attacks, a host of celebrities are to appear in an unprecedented US TV telethon. Stars including Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts and Will Smith will take part in America: A Tribute to Heroes this Friday.

The two-hour special will be aired without commercials on all six of the US's major networks as well as a large contingent of cable networks. All money raised will go toward relief efforts relating to last week's attacks.

Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Jim Carrey and Bruce Springsteen have confirmed they are to appear. They will be joining Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow, the Dixie Chicks, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Faith Hill, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Tom Petty, Paul Simon, Robin Williams, Stevie Wonder and Neil Young.

Other celebrities have been keen to help in whatever way they can. Daniel Day-Lewis and Robin Williams were among people who gave blood. Robert DeNiro delivered meals from his Tribeca Grill restaurant to rescue crews working around the ruined towers, and William Baldwin joined New York Knicks basketball player Charlie Ward in a visit to a fire station to console relatives of the dead.

The Walt Disney Company has donated more than £3.4m to organizations responding to the US terrorist attacks. The family of Disney chief executive officer Michael Eisner have also donated £700,000 from the Eisner Foundation.

• Director Woody Allen, who will not be appearing in the Telethon - he's in Europe promoting his latest film - spoke out yesterday, counseling caution.

"It won't do anyone any good if American hits back with exaggerated military force," he said in an interview with Germany's Die Welt newspaper.

"I'm fully aware that there has to be a response to these attacks, but a military attack should be the final means after all other means have been exhausted," Allen said. "It's important to root out the causes of this hatred."

Allen said he and many other New Yorkers had long been expecting some sort of guerrilla attack on the city. "Most thought there would be some sort of bomb attack in the subway," he said. "But not something like this. We used to make jokes about it. I even made jokes about it."

Looks like the guardian erroneously picked up an old story and published it for no good reason. The article it links to is this one from Sept 01:

Michael Jackson and Britney Spears are to collaborate on a single whose profits will go to help survivors and families of those killed in last week's terrorist attacks. Jackson, who will produce the record, has also enlisted Destiny's Child, Justin Timberlake of 'N Sync, and Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys.
It is hoped the song called What More Can I Give, will raise millions of dollars to help bereaved families. Two versions are to be recorded, in English and Spanish.
In a statement issued yesterday, the reclusive singer said: "I believe in my heart that the music community will come together as one and rally to the aid of thousands of innocent victims.
"There is a tremendous need for relief dollars right now and through this effort each one of us can play an immediate role in helping comfort so many people.
"We have demonstrated time and again that music can touch our souls. It is time we used that power to help us begin the process of healing immediately."
Jackson who is already working on the song, intends to record and release it as soon as possible.
The original charity single was Feed the World, organised by Bob Geldof in 1985. Jackson was heavily involved in the US equivalent of Band Aid - USA for Africa. He co-wrote and performed on the single We Are The World, which raised more than £40m ($59m) for the USA For Africa famine relief fund.

this is in regard to the united we stand show that helped raise funds for the 9/11 attacks

Thanks. Did Michael ever produce something for that? I wasn't a fan yet at that time. Would this be the song that Schaffel tied up with his shenanigans?

I agree with Marni - The Guardian may have published an old article in error.

In 2001 Michael did perform "What More Can I Give" at the "United We Stand" benefit Concert in Washington DC- Oct 21, 2001

Thanks for the video Mickson. That is great. It is hard to believe 9/11 happened so long ago. I seems like yesterday but so much has happened. Michael was great in that and in terms of what we hear about Michael not performing (as opposed to how it feels about 9/11) it seems recent.

I must admit that when I first saw this I thought it was current and my heart jumped. I thought it was the big surprise we were waiting for. I mean with so many disasters going on it is hard to keep track anymore. Any of them or all could warrent a benefit. Then after I got over the first rush I realized they were probably referring to 9/11 and I had to settle down and edit my first post so as not to mislead others. I am just so 'expectant' of something about to happen with Michael I can't help it.
