Exclusive: Inside Michael Jackson’s “Hollywood”

I value Michael Jackson's art the same as you do.

You do?

I'm not happy that the lyrics are changed, but Michael didn't recorded it so Teddy decided to write his own lyrics because he thought that that would be better for the song. I don't approve his decision, but I like the final version very much.

Oh.. you don't.

Why? Because I like Teddy's version of Hollywood Tonight?

What exactly do you like about it? The fact that it's now a Teddy Riley bandaged-up track that contradicts what Michael intended for the song? I'm sorry...I'm a Michael Jackson fan, not a Teddy Riley fan..

"She's only fifteen" part probably was not even recorded

It was they just chose to omit it, like alot of Michaels/Brads other ideas, The Throwback mix retains alot of them, Teddys version is not even a shadow of what michael and Brad had in mind for this track

What I'm also frustrated about is the way they (re)produced the songs.

With this album it became clear to me that even though some of Michael's previously released music was not produced by him (but by other musicians - Riley, Jerkins etc.), he was the ultimate producer of all of his songs. The co-producer credit was really most due to him.

These songs that made the "Michael" album which were in demo state (i.e. Hollywood Tonight which is the most incomplete of all seven) could be turned into something as good as Michael's fully completed work if they tried enough.
I know for sure that "she was only fifteen" line was recorded by Michael but dropped from the final song (why?) and there are also multiple demos with different vocal takes. Combine this with layered production and interesting instrumental solos + a good rapper for a verse and we'd have something AMAZING. This song LACKS Michael's spirit because there's just not enough in there musically and it COULD be done by other people than MJ.
Unfortunately, it would take more than a day to complete a masterpiece like this and there was no one to supervise the process.
Remember, Riley had HT done "in no time" (I quote)... the same as all of his other submissions for the project.

I really wish it was only one producer/musician (Neff-U, John McClain or Brad Buxer preferably) who had a year to work solely on Michael's music, go through all the songs and properly complete what was left incomplete the best way it could be done. Then get a team of marketing specialists and we could still have something wortwhile.

The way it is now - as sad as it is - I see no bright future for Michael's art at all.

While I don't care for the spoken-word part on Hollywood Tonight, I'd like to point out that Riley's lyrics do make the girl succeed, but they imply her success is empty and ultimately soul-destroying : "now it's back to reality, from this Hollywood". Basically success wasn't all it's cracked up to be.

I know I would have.

They're treating Michael's art as mediocre pop music with no depth, and they're totally missing the point. He was one of the few commercially successful artists (dare I say: massive!) who were able to merge popularity with true, meaningful art. Michael was a master of that. Now all they do is barely scratch the surface of his commercial side while completely dropping ALL artistry.

Spot on. Don't forget Michael Jackson was the artist who released TDCAU, Earth Song, etc... An artist who saw himself as the platform to spread great messages. He's never just another commercial pop singer. He's way much more.

What I'm also frustrated about is the way they (re)produced the songs.

Great post! :agree:

Hollywood Tonight is a great track. However, the producers simply turn it into a danceable track. The production is quite horrible, IMO. I'm frustrated by the autotune and the way they chopped Michael's vocals.

I'm no optimistic about any posthumous release of incomplete materials. I just don't see enough appreication and respect being put into Michael's music.

The bridge penned by Michael fit the story he had in mind. A runaway girl, age 15, goes aginst her parents and chase her movie star dream. She struggles and has no way out.

I don't know what went through Teddy's mind when he decided to re-write the bridge and twist the story Michael left.

May be getting a co-writter credit on a Michael Jackson song can make people do strange things.

Well I can tell you that even having a producer credit on a Michael Jackson song can put a big smile on your face, I can assure you. Hell, being a part of a Michael Jackson record, even in a small way, has that effect.

"It lacks Michael spirit."

Can your brother, your best friend, the closest person that have worked with you, re-produce your visions, your thoughts, your artistical self? No , they can't! No one can! cause they are not you. can't read your mind. Doesn't matter how much someone strains his ass or thinks he knows you.

If Riley, McClain, Buxter and ect could, we wouldn't need Michael for the last 15 years. Or Michael wouldn't have to work on albums. just record something and give it to others to finish it.

Just enjoy the music, much as you can and don't give too much into it. thats why all those examples and comparisons of what Michael has done and how he has done are pointless.
If someone could do TDCAU, ES, Bj, Michael would have been just another mediocre pop singer and not who he was. ( i think i repeat myself)
thats holding you of enjoy and "accept" the situation now.

And I may be wrong (I'm sure, i'm not), but didn't we "the fans" wail, why there was still no album, no unreleased songs, year after Michaels death. why it take them so long. that they are going to miss the time, when the whole "hype" after his death was. well, here you have it.

Yes. You're definitely wrong.
come on, don't quote just that whats comfortable for you.

I'm DEFINITELY not.

And don't come with "it wasn't me", "no, i didn't" and pointing the fingers to others.

Strange how fast people forget. especially the things they've brewed them self.

You know whats most wicked thing in life after having a dream? self lying.

I agree that I was eager to hear some unrealesed songs, but not like this. They should have released them just the way Michael left them and IF he had left some completely recorded.
If not, I would have wanted only the demos.
If the demos aren't available, then none.
I am not interested in further commercial succes, he is already the best selling artist.

I rather listen to OTW, Thriller, Bad etc. a thousand times more.

What a ridiculous post.

I couldn't give a monkey's about unreleased material so save the indignation for someone who actually cares.

You wanted unreleased material? Good for you. Don't tell me what I did or didn't want.

Don't tell me what I am. Pessimistic? No. I just value Michael Jackson's art more than you do. You're happy to see his lyrics being changed? The ones that he wrote with his own hands? The hands that wrote Billie Jean, Beat It, Earth Song and Black Or White? Suddenly they're not good enough for the world to hear? And Teddy Riley has to 'salvage' a Michael Jackson song?

Pessimistic? Don't make me laugh.

You want to see what they're doing to Michael Jackson's art? THIS is what they're doing to Michael Jackson's art!

The great Jackie Wilson reduced to a singing and dancing claymation puppet. THE Jackie Wilson that Elvis stole his whole career from!

Arguably the greatest jazz artist of all time, Nina Simone, converted to a singing black cat. Nine Simone!!!

What the Estate is doing with Michael's art is no different to that, in my eyes. Pessimistic? No. Realistic.

You applaud it if you want. Don't tell me what I am or what my personality is.

You think your "it" don't you? Lol I feel sorry for you

everyone please watch the tone in the thread.

express your ideas but please do not make it at the expense of disrespecting other member's ideas.

if not expect a cleaning / thread closing with warnings issued.

That's part of the problem, you only think about yourself as if you're someone to look up to around here. Look at the album thread, if you can, before it released (it may be locked now, only viewable to donators), but 65% of this forum was rambling on about how we hadn't gotten any unreleased music yet, and how pissed they'd be if the album was full of songs that had already leaked and were just re-done. People were moaning, whining about how they didn't want an album with Another Day, The Way You Love Me, and ton's of other re-releases...So Lom Kit isn't wrong at all.

...So Lom Kit isn't wrong at all.

Lom Kit addressed his post to me. Now unless you know me better than I know myself, on what basis are you going to claim he's not wrong to claim that I wanted unreleased material being released?

Just don't listen/don't watch the video of the future releases and everyone's happy.

Yes, because as a lifelong Michael Jackson fan the best thing to do would be to stand back and watch as his art gets raped day-in, day-out.

I have no intention of watching that horrid video again. Thanks for your concern, though.

To me your logic is invalid, this constant hating on MJ's Estate is ridiculas, to me you obviously have no understanding of how things are done in Business, and the things the estate are now doing, they are listening to the fans to an extent now.

And them raping Michael art..........

They are listening to the fans? In what way? And what do you know about my business background to make such a bogus claim?

And them raping Michael art..........

Yes. Disgusting isn't it? Or should I be thanking the Estate/Sony releasing the Thriller video, for example, with black boxes all around it EVEN on the iPhone???

they are listening to the fans to an extent now.

They made some fans happy by releasing HT with Michael's raw vocals...But at the same time, Riley CHANGES Michael Jackson's lyrics.....How is this NOT disrespecting his art?

Right lets actually look at this, with REAL answers instead of shouting how everyone else is wrong and the Estate and Sony and Cascios and anyone else involved in Michael music/videos/legacy is doing the wrong thing.

Okay, for a start, have the Estate released any Cascio tracks as singles? no, why, because of the uproar about things from what i have been told after BTM & HT possibly one more single will be released from "Michael" would be interesting to see if its a Cascio track

Again, The fans complained about teddy Rileys mix of Hollywood tonight and the way he has over-edited MJ's vocals and changed the entire message of the song...........what did the Estate do??? Scrap Teddys version and release a version which is extremely similar to one of Michaels versions of the song, infact they have used pretty much ALL the vocals Michael ever recorded for that song.

Again, the Estate have hired an Online team to correspond with fans who are interested, this team sends out regular emails and keeps us upto date with michael jackson releases and information, this team is also very contactable and very polite and interested in what the fans have to say

Again regarding the Bad tour release coming next year, I emailed the estate about some issues and I believe some stuff has changed to do with the release, because of the way the FANS want it.

All the above is happening because of the fans uproar over mistakes they made on the "michael" album, they made mistakes because they released it off the cuff, now they are learning.

If you actually look at the above and what the estate have put in place in the last few months, are they really ignoring fans?

First, let me just put a disclaimer here. I don't hate the Estate. My wish is real simple. I just want them to protect and reinforce Michael's artistic integrity.

Yes, the Cascio tracks are not released as singles, but they are indeed included on the album. Many fans have doubts on the vocal authenticity and ask the Estate to release tangible proof, not just a flimsy statment, one way or another. So far, absolutely nothing has been released to ease fans' concerns.

Of course they are not going to release Breaking News as single after the unfavourable reactions from the public after the song's on-line streaming.

KYHU is never a single material. Who knows? If Hollywood Tonight and BTM do nothing to lift sales, Monster may be released. I was told Monster has "hit potential" written all over. Whatever!

I'll give the Estate credit for the Throwback Remix.

You may be much more connected than most fans out there. I know nothing about this Online Team. What is their contact info? I'd love to get in touch with them as well.

I sincerely hope you are right. I hope they learn from this mishap and put all their hearts in all future releases. So far, the collaborations between Sony and the Estate are mediocre.
