If “One More Chance” was properly released and promoted, would it have been Michael’s 2000s success?

Aside the trial drama that halted the music video production of “One More Chance”, I do like the song and feel that Michael put more effort, enthusiasm and focus on it (performance and production-wise) than even the Invincible album. If the trial never happened or the song/ music video was at least officially released to the public, it would have boosted Michael’s image. If officially released in 2004, it would have shared the charts with Outkast, Maroon 5 and The Black Eyed Peas.
 
Even if the 'One More Chance' song was properly released and promoted (without the trial), it would not have achieved big success.

The song musically did not break new ground, the vocals were just decent, and the lyrics were too plain.

'One More Chance' was also described as a backward step for Michael Jackson, considering that it was very similar to many of his previous songs ('Human Nature', 'Cry', 'You Are Not Alone', 'On The Line', and so on).
 
No. Even before the allegations broke, the association with R. Kelly was already being talked about.

Also, it's a very very average song. I like it, but it was never going to light the charts on fire. That chorus wears thin by the end.
 
What do you mean, properly released and promoted? It was properly released and promoted. There were two CD singles, and I heard it on the radio, which is more than can be said for any of the other four bands I was listening to at the time.

And actually, the performance was ok. #5 in the UK. #7 in Spain and Italy. That's amazing. Most artists would kill for such success.

I like the song, it's the best R Kelly song, but let's not kid ourselves it was going to get to #1 in six countries. It's not Sony's fault, it's just not hit material.

Adele didn't break any new ground either, but was extremely successful. Same for Taylor Swift. Also, look at what's popular on TV, shows like American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, Masked Singer, America's Got Talent, & The Voice. So I don't know what that has to do with anything.
 
I didn't see the song going #1 but at that time, it felt like a nice send off as it's his last official single.
 
If the song was on Invincible and released as a single in 2001, maybe. But there was no way it was going to do well in 2003 following the Bashir doc, let alone the Arvizo allegations.

The song isn't even good. Another Off the Wall-era retread while also sounding like R. Kelly's "Ignition" remix. And the lyrics are awful. R. Kelly is trash lol
