Julien Nitzberg Announces Musical FOR THE LOVE OF A GLOVE, An Unauthorized Musical Fable

It's like..."Yeah, of course his music is incredible, he was MICHAEL JACKSON!"
But people forget that Michael had to become Michael Jackson. He was good with music, yeah. But to simply disregard all the hard work, practice and grinding that he actually had to put in...that is so much heasier than actually acknowledging his dedication and focus.

This. People are always surprised when I tell them that MJ worked closely with a vocal coach for many years, to warm up for recording sessions, to expand his vocal range etc. He always worked on improving his craft. I wish more established artists would be that down-to-earth. Instead, many artists let their success get to their head, and when someone comes along who puts more effort into their work, they’re jealous.

I agree. He always worked with Seth Riggs right? I think it is is name. Just because he was Michael Jackson doesn't mean he didn't need anyone else. Like you said he always worked on his craft to become better and better.

Yup, Seth Riggs. Look him up on YouTube, there are some really good videos about the speech level singing technique that he popularized. :)

EDIT: It’s a bit off topic, but here’s a good one. :)

Johnny Depp's Michael Jackson Musical Will Blame Sex Abuse on "Virgin Boy Blood" Glove

exclut2-h_2019.jpg

The L.A. production 'For the Love of a Glove' is a part-puppet show in which the late singer's alleged history of child sex abuse is blamed on a glove-shaped alien forcing Jackson to feed on boys.

Michael Jackson, of all people, seems to be making a comeback. The late and controversial pop star is about to get his own Broadway show (MJ: The Musical, set to open July 6 with Ephraim Sykes in the lead role) as well as a biopic (producer Graham King has been working with Jackson's estate and scribe John Logan). And now, Johnny Depp and his company Infinitum Nihil are producing an L.A. stage play about the King of Pop … or, rather, his famous glove.

Written by L.A. playwright and filmmaker Julien Nitzberg, For the Love of a Glove tells the story of what happens after a group of aliens shaped like bedazzled gloves crash-land in Jackson’s hometown of Gary, Indiana. “It turns out, [the glove] can give people magical musical talent if it drinks their blood and has part of their body inside of it,” Nitzberg, 54, tells Rambling Reporter. “But it can only feed on virgin boy blood.”

Naturally, one alien glove attaches itself to a young Michael Jackson, who eventually learns that he can’t feed all five alien gloves himself, so he starts bringing boys home.

Nitzberg describes the musical as a layered look at the entire landscape of Jackson’s life including themes of racism, religious oppression (Jackson was raised a Jehovah’s Witness), cultural appropriation and a reported rivalry with Donny Osmond, who was accused of copying Jackson’s ensembles and photo shoots. He's also quick to point out that the production — set to open Jan. 25, 2020, at the Carl Sagan-Ann Druyan Theater inside the Center for Inquiry on West Temple Street — is not a jukebox musical; rather, it contains 20 original songs and will feature Japanese Bunraku-style puppets.

Actor and comedian Jerry Minor (Saturday Night Love, Mr. Show) takes on the title role of THRHIL-LHA (aka, the Glove) with Eric B. Anthony (The Lion King) starring as Jackson. Additional characters in the show will include other members of The Jackson 5, Osmond, Emmanuel Lewis (star of TV's Webster), Corey Feldman and Bubbles the Chimp.

Nitzberg explains that the seed of the project was planted 17 years ago when he was approached by a TV network he declines to name to write a Jackson biopic. Even then, he refused to do a sanitized version that didn’t address the child abuse allegations so a deal was never made. Instead, he hatched the plan for a fictionalized take involving the rogue gloves.

As for how Depp got involved, his production company, Infinitum Nihil, had been working with Nitzberg on a biopic of ukulele player Tiny Tim, and when that fell through Nitzberg pitched his glove story.

The show’s producers are Leigh Crawford, Depp, Sam Sarkar, Tony Jones, Betsy Zajko and Burk Zanft. Crawford and Zanft are the sole investors with Nitzberg handling directing duties based on his own book and lyrics. Composers are Drew Erickson, Nicole Morier and Max Townsley with musical director Christopher Moscatiello. The production designer is Andrea Keller and costumes are by Ann Closs-Farley. Robin Walsh is lead puppet designer and puppet director.

Nitzberg says now is the time to process Jackson’s story rather than cancel his legacy. “We should be in 'process culture,' where we process how ****ed up people are and understand what made them that way,” he explains. “I think there’s a collective trauma of everyone who grew up as a Jackson 5 fan and a Michael fan. This is a way to process that in a fun way while helping people understand all of the really ****ed up stuff that affected Michael’s life.”

^ UPDATE:
Looks like Depp has spoken up at last....

Update Dec. 4, 12:07 p.m.: An earlier version of the story listed Johnny Depp and his production company Infinitum Nihil as producers of For the Love of a Glove. There is currently a dispute over credits and a rep for Depp says that he and his company are not producing and not involved in any way.

I don't know but to me this sounds like they are teasing MJ. Its such a nonsense story. To me that doesn't make any sense.

Even an 'anti -MJ' journalist has written negatively about this production. (and all the comments below the article currently seem to be from Mj fans and supporters).

Big Nope to a Michael Jackson Musical Where His Glove Is an Alien That Feeds on Young Boys’ Blood

Negative and uninformed article, but it ends:

I would be lying if I didn’t say a part of me isn’t intrigued, but I’m more the kind of intrigued as to whether or not something smells bad and then you smell it and go, “Yeah, that smells bad. Why did I do this?” so let’s hope this stops before it even begins.

He can't deny being involved....it's HIS production company. Plus...it wasn't he who issued the denial, it was his publicist, or PR person, who could just as easily be trying to avoid the wrath of MJ fans.

"we knew that the sanctioned other Michael Jackson projects were probably going to ignore that aspect of his life while we had it as a major element."

Yep. I think I've read all I need to know about this "musical".

My understanding is that they’re denying the involvement of his production company also. Either way, that “musical” is at the very least in poor taste and shouldn’t get more attention than it already has.

Lowbrow insensitive trash wanting to look like highbrow "satire", combined with a publicity stunt using Depp's name (and MJ's of course, but that's not news).

Unfortunetly their dirty trick worked, as per TSCM: "Soon after the headlines hit, their initial shows sold out. It definitely worked to their benefit. In the early media interviews, Nitzberg said he once talked w/ Depp's company about a different biopic that never happened, and then told "an exec" about his MJ idea. That's it."

They’re not using any of Michael’s music.

As for his name and likeness, it appears that in the USA once you’re dead, people are allowed to do pretty much anything with it. Which – from my European point of view – is extremely bizarre.

They may be eligible to use MJ's name and likeness under the concept of 'fair use' in United States copyright law which includes:
commentary, search engines, criticism, parody, news reporting, research, and scholarship.

On the other hand, 'Michael Jackson' is a trademark and is protected for the following uses:

Entertainment services, namely, live performances featuring musical, dance, dramatic, presentations; song writing services; entertainment services, namely, providing information and commentary online in the field of music; providing online newsletters in the field of music via e-mail; entertainment services, namely, providing pre-recorded music, video and graphics, providing information in the field of music, and commentary and articles about music, all of the foregoing on-line and non-downloadable; providing an Internet website portal featuring musical performances, musical videos, film clips, photographs and other multimedia materials.

https://trademarks.justia.com/864/85/michael-86485781.html

'Michael Jackson' is used throughout their advertising, but the musical is likely to be categorised as 'parody / criticism'.
The advertising makes clear that the musical is 'Unauthorised', so I doubt there is much that can be done legally. (Wikipedia says:Trademarks may also be lawfully used in parodies, since in that case there is usually no likelihood of confusion (with the official Trademark)).

Don't forget that many MJ tribute performers use 'Michael Jackson' in their promotional materials, and are not sued....

Sometimes it leads to shit like this but in the end, it's better for things to go into the public domain, in my opinion. European IP laws are very hostile towards the public domain, much moreso than in the United States. The more freedom people have to create artwork of all kinds, the better.

All of that said, this play looks like absolute trash. Making a mockery of MJ and it's bs.

I agree with you that works of arts/science should be at public domain as much as possible, but I think what ScreenOrigami meant wasn't about using MJ's work, but exploiting his personality rights ("his name and likeness"). As well as Depp's BTW when they lied about his involvement for a cheap PR stunt.

I'm getting so much second hand embarrasement just reading about the musical. I imagine the theater will be empty.

Choreographers Cris Judd, Bryan Anthony Join FOR THE LOVE OF A GLOVE Michael Jackson Musical

Award-winning playwright/filmmaker Julien Nitzberg today announced that choreographers Cris Judd and Bryan Anthony have joined the company of his new musical FOR THE LOVE OF A GLOVE, AN UNAUTHORIZED MUSICAL FABLE ABOUT Michael Jackson AS TOLD BY HIS GLOVE. Cris Judd danced with Michael Jackson for many years, most notably at the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards, on The Dangerous Tour and HIStory Tour, where he became one of Michael's main dancers. Bryan Anthony danced as an 11-year-old with Michael Jackson, Alfonso Ribeiro and the other Jackson brothers in an infamous 1984 Pepsi commercial.

Bryan Anthony also choreographed and was Assistant Creative Director to Barry Lather on the Donny & Marie Osmond show in Las Vegas, adding to FOR THE LOVE OF A GLOVE a certain verisimilitude to the character of Donny Osmond, whose attempted appropriation of Jackson's looks and moves in real life is among the many cultural arrows in Nitzberg's rich satirical quiver.

Both choreographers' contributions bookend that of another figure close to Jackson, producer Tony Jones, who worked with the whole Jackson 5 as they exploded and has been working with Nitzberg and FOR THE LOVE OF A GLOVE for the last 2 years.

Said Nitzberg: "I knew I wanted to work with people who would enrich the show through their personal experiences. Cris Judd and Bryan Anthony both danced with Michael Jackson. They not only draw on that experience as choreographers but also give our cast insights into the real life of Michael Jackson. They have been consistently adding wit to the dancing that pays tribute to Michael that also comically enhances our political commentary.

Nitzberg adds: "Since our star Jerry Minor, who plays the title character, was raised as a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses, he brings to the show the pain he lived by growing up in a repressive cult. Our show delves into the sexual repression that the Jehovah's Witnesses use to torment their members. One number highlights the Jehovah's Witnesses' teaching that masturbation can turn you gay. Many in our company had never heard of this belief, but Jerry talks about hearing this from a young age and being made to confess his sinful sexual thoughts to church elders. An important part of the show explores how homophobia and sexual repression probably affected Michael."

Judd's career highlights include dancing with Diana Ross on the music video for Take Me Higher. As a choreographer Judd's body of work spans live events, TV and film including Jennifer Love Hewitt's Pro-Bowl Halftime show, "Bringing Down The House" (staring Queen Latifah and Steve Martin), and the fan-favorite 420 Dance for Netflix's Disjointed. Cris Judd and Bryan Anthony also appeared together as dancers at the 1998 Motown Through The Years Super Bowl Halftime with Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, and Boyz II Men.

Anthony was a dancer in the cult classic film "Showgirls." Bryan started acting at the age of 5 doing commercials and work on television shows such as Different Strokes and Small Wonder. He has danced with an incredibly diverse list of artists including Paula Abdul, Reba McEntire, Boyz II Men, Queen Latifah, Paulina Rubio, Donna Summer, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez and Carrie Underwood. He continues to work as both an assistant creative director, assistant choreographer, and choreographer for such shows as Miss America, Kids' Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, American Idol, Disjointed, Coop & Cami, Henry Danger and Fuller House. He has also stunt-danced and doubled for Adam Sandler in the films "You Don't Mess with the Zohan," "Bedtime Stories," "Jack & Jill," and "The Do Over."

FOR THE LOVE OF A GLOVE stars Jerry Minor, (Daily Show correspondent, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Dr. Martin Luther King in Netflix's Historical Roasts, SNL) as Michael Jackson's glove THRHIL-LHA, and Eric B. Anthony (The Lion King on Broadway) as Michael Jackson. As with the hit Broadway musical AVENUE Q, and THE LION KING, the performers and puppets are equally visible in FOR THE LOVE OF A GLOVE. This show does not use "Muppet-style" puppets, but rather original, meticulously built Japanese Bunraku-inspired puppets designed by Robin Walsh and created with her associate puppet artists Adrian Rose Leonard and Ron Binion. Realistic and close to life size, these 20 all-original works of art portray all members of the Jackson 5, Donny Osmond, Emmanuel Lewis, Corey Feldman and Bubbles the Chimp.

FOR THE LOVE OF A GLOVE opens January 25, 2020, the inaugural production of the Carl Sagan- Ann Druyan Theater on the ground floor of the Center For Inquiry (CFI-West) 2535 W. Temple Street at Rampart, adjacent to Hollywood and DTLA. Tickets: www.fortheloveofaglove.com

The show's producers are Leigh Crawford, Tony Jones, Julien Nitzberg, Sam Sarkar (CEO of Infinitum Nihil, which is not involved), and Betsy Zajko, and Burk Zanft, the sole investor.

Just for the record. A 51 minute interview with J Nitz. the writer.

At least the host podcast title is correct (Sick and Wrong). The beginning sounds like a 'frat boy' semi drunken party.

Examples of their accuracy of information- they say 'The Jacksons are very litigious, They are suing HBO'. Plus, of course they (the musical producers and cast) believe LN and find it very amusing :(

Apparently the Jackson's tour manager who is part of the production Co. says that the Jacksons always used to tease MJ and call him a little girl. Also apparently MJ has been 'dead for 7 years now''.

Worst of all, they are hoping to take this rubbish to a larger theatre, maybe in New York (I guess they want to play at the same time as MJ the Musical).
