"Speaking to students at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film & TV on April 8, Jones recalled meeting Jackson as a 12-year-old and then getting to know him on the 1978 movie The Wiz. Later, “I used to call Michael ‘Smelly,’ because he wouldn’t say ‘funky.’ He’d say ‘smelly jelly.’ "

DUH!!!

This part make me sad ..
He shares that when Jackson was traveling he couldn't simply send his clothes out to be cleaned because, quite often, his belongings wouldn't be returned.

"Everybody kept something for a souvenir," writes Richie.

First off, according to the person who gave him the nickname it had nothing to do with his hygiene, so let's not re-write history:

Secondly, what kind of friend would say something like that in a book for the whole world to read? There are plenty of people who talked about how good Michael smelled, so just because he had a bad day where he couldn't change clothes doesn't mean you have to humiliate him for it in front of the whole world.

I mean, I don't mind the part where he explains that it was not always possible for him to change clothes because of his special circumstances, but he didn't have to say that he smelled bad. That's the kind of things you can keep to yourself out of respect.

Sometimes I think Quincy just wanted to mellow the real meaning out... it's pretty straightforward, "Smelly."

I thought it was because of MJ's supposed knack for hearing (or "smelling") a good melody.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was really because of how much MJ supposedly stank, and Quincy just made the other explanation up, but you'd think Quincy would be the one to say this, not Lionel Richie.

Maybe there are multiple meanings to what "Smelly" meant, I dunno. We'll never know for sure now that both MJ and Quincy have passed on.

Relax he isn’t saying anything bad and has actually spent time with Michael have any of you? 🙄

Interesting this also seems to line up w/ another story of (literally) MJ's dirty laundry

Michael had a zoo in his backyard. What people call bad hygiene is probably just him feeding his giraffe that morning and the smell lingering on. Karen said she smelled like giraffe for days after petting Michael's giraffe, the smell might be hard to get rid of.

Anyway, I hope Michael purposefully put on his "giraffe" jeans whenever he went to see Lionel just to watch him run around to get him new pants.

Relax he isn’t saying anything bad and has actually spent time with Michael have any of you? 🙄
Are we so used to people disrespecting Michael that now it's not an insult to say someone smells bad in front of the whole world? Those headlines are NOT good, but I guess between that and being called a child molester, it makes what Lionel said look good... There are also plenty of people who said Michael smelled amazing, so he does not deserve the reputation of smelling bad just because of one or two incidents. But hey, now the media will have fun with it...

Sorry I am not sure what I am hearing here, did you say Michael "supposedly stank"?
Like I am not sure what you actually mean but I know 10000% for sure Michael never STANK of hygenie issues..period!

QUOTE: Quincy Jones called Michael Jackson "Smelly" because Jackson would say "smelly jelly" to describe something that was funky or cool, as he avoided saying "funky" himself. The nickname was a lighthearted reference to Jackson's unique slang and did not relate to odor, and Jones even referred to Jackson as "Smelly" in tributes after his passing. Jackson used "smelly jelly" to convey that something was grooving or impressive, and Jones adopted the term, shortening it to "Smelly"

👉Glad we clarified this for those that did not know, what this nickname is in reference TO and not ABOUT Michael's smell!👈

FACTS:
The only way Michael's "SMELL" ever offended anyone is that he used way to much COLOGNE and so what do you know how many people documented in print that talked about how amazzzzzzzzzzing he smelled like " TOM FORD" is a very exspensive kinda STANK right!!
:ROFLMAO::LOL::ROFLMAO:

It's sad to me that there are people who crave tabloid nonsense even in MJ's own fanbase. No critical thinking at all.
