Now that my hype has calmed down I'd say my biggest problem with the film is that it really is quite rushed. They rushed through the J5 era, they skipped the transition years between Motown to Epic and there was really 1 song from The Jacksons besides the one on the soundtrack that was shown (I'm not too familiar with MJ's discography pre-Off The Wall so I unfortunately don't know the name). The Off The Wall era was skimmed through and so were the clips (the "Beat It" one was a big let down because it wasn't even a clip it was just a rehearsal), if you've seen the teasers you've practically seen all those parts of the movie. The jumps in timeline were quite sudden, you see MJ as a kid and suddenly it transitions to the year 1978 and Michael is just about to release Off The Wall with no mention of The Wiz. This, the cut to Victory Tour and then to Bad Tour is where it's the most abrupt.
The dramatization is mostly centered around Joe being controlling and MJ trying to break free from him, we do get other bits showing how much of a lonely person Michael was and that he only had the company of his own animals, bits with Michael vising sick children at hospitals (the scene where Bill Bray was looking over MJ talking to a burn victim after the Pepsi commercial accident was quite touching) and stuff like the vitiligo/plastic surgery was just briefly touched on. There isn't much depth besides that.
I still enjoyed watching the movie, I'd say it picks up after "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" is played (Michael's voice was powerful in that acapella) which is quite early on in the film but it is a let down in some aspects. I'd rate the movie a 6.5/10, it really could've used a bigger runtime.
