The Very Best Of The Jacksons drops 27-50 (Week 6)
___________________________________________________________________

Thanks Guy. Not all territories received the same "Best Of Jacksons" release. Here's the rundown...

In early March 2004, The Essential Jacksons was released only in the U.S. The album only charted on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart peaking at #99. Since this was the first U.S. release of the Jacksons' greatest hits, the dissappointing chart placement was a surprise to me, although in hindsight, I think low shipments, generic "Essential" series packaging, coupled with no promotion played a large role in the album being overlooked. On June 28, 2004, through a licensing agreement with Universal Music, Sony Music UK released the 32 song double disc The Very Best Of The Jacksons. Technically, the album should have been called The Very Best Of The Jackson 5, Michael Jackson and The Jacksons since the first disc comprised of Jackson Five tracks along with some of Michael's solo hits from the Motown era, while the second disc comprised of Jacksons hits from their tenure at Epic. Details aside, the album peaked at #7 on the UK Album Chart selling over 55,000 during its first week alone. This week, the album continues to chart in the Top 40 hanging on at #40 (Week 6).

*Note: This album was released under the title The Very Best Of The Jacksons and Jackson Five in Australia. As you already know, the album has achieved noteworthy success in that country peaking at #15 on the ARIA Album Chart and #3 on the ARIA Urban Album Chart.

And finally, on July 20th, 2004, Motown/Universal Music released The Jacksons Story in the USA, featuring 20 selections spanning 1969-1982. Featuring seven #1 Pop smashes, the album collects material recorded by the Jackson 5, the Jacksons, Jermaine Jackson, and Michael Jackson. You'll notice that it was Universal and not Epic/Sony Music who released this album. Similarly, I believe some sort of licensing arrangement was arranged allowing them to do so. As already mentioned, the album has peaked at #74 thus far on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. Cover and tracklisting:

Hey Amit!

Thankyou for that info on the various Jackson releases!

I was initially under the impression that 'The Very Best of The Jacksons and The Jackson Five' was released in all markets, which is why I was confused.

It all makes sense to me now!

In the chart week beginning 23/07/2004, 'The Very Best of The Jacksons and The Jackson Five' jumps eight places to #4 on the Top 40 Albums Chart!

Hey Amit!

Long time no chat!

As of June 6th, 2004, Michael Jackson's USA Soundscan sales for Soundscan era Epic singles are as follows:

1. You Are Not Alone: 1.056 million
2. Black Or White: 758,230
3. Scream: 718,740
4. Remember The Time: 575,510
5. Will You Be There: 492,450

10. Who Is It: 179,460
11. Stranger In Moscow: 85,000-100,000*
12. One More Chance: 30,000**

This is very interesting information Amit! Thankyou! I am surprised that both 'Scream' and 'Black Or White' have sold quite a bit less than 1 million copies. The numbers for 'They Don't Care About Us' are quite impressive, considering its relatively low HOT 100 peak.

I agree with you on Michael's catalogue sales, they are amazing! This is especially since Michael has fewer titles available than many other artists (how many albums has Madonna released!).

Thanks Guy for your great wrap up.

BTW, "Black Or White" and "Scream" are both certified platinum by the RIAA. At the time, maxi singles counted twice toward certifications.

Great news in Australia and New Zealand.

Year To Date Soundscan tallies rounded off (through 10/17/04) for Michael Jackson and his peers. Information courtesy of JRKing. Enjoy.

*** indicates 2004 release

Michael Jackson - 699,620 units

1. Number Ones: 342,110
2. Thriller: 173,835
3. Greatest Hits-History, Vol. 1: 107,255
4. Off the Wall: 38,200
5. Bad: 14,280
6. Dangerous: 11,450
7. Invincible: 9,585
8. Blood on the Dance Floor: 2,905

Note # 1: Released in late 2003, Number Ones is Michael Jackson's best seller so far this year. Will The Ultimate Collection surpass Number Ones when it only has seven weeks to chart in 2004 and will be priced significantly higher? We shall see. Meanwhile, Thriller continues to see great catalog sales, while his other special editions saw decent sales. Despite Number Ones ' presence, Greatest Hits - HIStory Volume 1 is holding up well. In fact, both Number Ones and GH-H V 1 are quietly approaching a cumulative total of 800k each.

Note # 2: The cumulative Soundscan total of 699,620 units does not include the total for video/DVD releases like: Number Ones, The One, Video Greatest Hits - HIStory, HIStory On Film: Volume 2, Dangerous: The Short Films, Moonwalker, etc. Nor does it include the sales for any Jacksons releases like The Essential and The Jacksons Story (both released earlier this year).

Madonna - 347,485 units

1. The Immaculate Collection: 155,410
2. Remixed & Revisited: 45,520
3. GHV2: 33,270
4. American Life: 28,405
5. Ray of Light: 14,145
6. Something to Remember: 12,970
7. Like a Virgin: 11,240
8. Music: 10,410
9. True Blue: 7,720
10. Madonna: 7,405
11. Erotica: 5,605
12. Like a Prayer: 5,510
13. You Can Dance: 5,105
14. Evita: 3,010
15. I'm Breathless: 1,760

Notes: The Immaculate Collection continues as M's biggest-selling title, by far. Ray of Light sees the highest sales of her pre-2003 studio efforts. Like a Prayer has "ralllied" since May, and likely will move past Erotica for 2004.

Cher - 425,860 units

1. Very Best of Cher: 231,355
2. Very Best of Cher (Deluxe Edition): 67,475
***3. 20th Century Masters... Millennium Collection (2004): 47,420
4. If I Could Turn Back Time: Cher's Greatest Hits: 21,675
5. Heart of Stone: 16,430
6. 20th Century Masters...Millennium Collection (2000): 14,515
7. Believe: 11,770
8. Half Breed: 9,970
9. Living Proof: 3,550
10. Love Hurts: 1,700

Notes: The Very Best of Cher sits comfortably as Cher's best seller. However, her other numerous compilations still see OK sales.

Whitney Houston - 112,275 units

1. The Greatest Hits: 48,095
2. The Bodyguard: 16,360
3. Just Whitney: 12,530
4. The Prwacher's Wife: 8,175
5. Whitney Houston: 7,710
6. My Love is Your Love: 7,050
7. One Wish: 5,940
8. Whitney: 5,115
9. I'm Your Baby Tonight: 1,300

Notes: Greatest Hits easily maintains its lead as Whit's top seller, though The Bodyguard contnues to do pretty decently (considering 5 of the 6 Whitney tracks are found on GH).

Janet Jackson - 1,144,859 units

***1. Damita Jo: 940,840
2. janet.: 70,185
3. Design of a Decade: 39,470
4. All For You: 35,490 (separately, the CD/DVD edition has scanned 6,830 to date this year)
5. The Velvet Rope: 25,760
6. Rhythm Nation: 14,740
7. Control: 11,195
8. Janet Jackson: 345
9. Dream Street: 4

Notes: Of JJ's pre-2004 releases, janet. continues its impressive catalog sales. In fact, the two albums that follow also see healthy catalog numbers- these three albums have yet to be represented on a hits compilation, which probably partly accounts for the impressive numbers.

Mariah Carey - 240,364 units

1. Greatest Hits: 70,110
2. Remixes: 56,230
3. #1s: 42,350
4. Charmbracelet: 14,235
5. Music Box: 13,580
6. Butterfly: 11,460
7. Glitter: 8,895
8. Rainbow: 7,945
9. Daydream: 6,160
10. Mariah Carey: 3,540
11. MTV Unplugged: 2,755
12. Emotions: 1,584
13. Merry Christmas: 1,520

Notes: Greatest Hits comfortably takes the top spot from #1's as Mariah's best catalog seller. Greatest Hits has been making strides in recent weeks, notably making upward movement at mass merchants (where's it increased 300+ copies last week). Merry Christmas, as usual, will do good business through year's end.
