UK

Michael Jackson is Britain's 6th Biggest Selling Singles Artist.

You'll note that Michael's tally doesn't take into account his work with the Jackson 5/Jacksons, therefore, I wonder how much higher he would have placed if those single sales were included. :flowers:

Cliff is the ultimate pop star Feb 23 2004

Sir Cliff Richard has been crowned the UK's Ultimate Pop Star as the biggest selling artist of all time.

He came out ahead of The Beatles and Elvis Presley for selling more singles in the UK than any other artist in the past 50 years.

Sunday night's Channel 4 show, The Ultimate Pop Star, crowned Madonna the top female artist.

At number four in the list, the Material Girl was the only female in the top ten Ultimate Pop Stars.

She was followed by Kylie Minogue at number 13 and The Spice Girls at 15.

Despite his phenomenal success, Robbie Williams only came in at number 37 on the Channel Four list.

The Beatles came second on the list, Elvis Presley third, Elton John fifth, and Michael Jackson sixth.

The Ultimate Pop Stars was presented by Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse.

The show counted down the definitive list of the 50 biggest-selling artists of all time, based on UK singles sales from the past 50 years.

The Ultimate Pop Star also featured interviews with Rod Stewart, Sir Cliff Richard, Duran Duran and Westlife.

Michael Jackson did very well with 11.3 million sold on his own.
I believe he might have sold between 3 and 4 million singles with the J 5/Jacksons.

His first 4 chart entries in the UK in 1970, certainly shifted well over 1 million together ( I Want You Back #2, ABC #8, The Love You Save #7 and I'll Be There #4).
Show You The Way To Go (UK #1), Blame It On the Boogie (UK #8), Shake Your Body (UK #4) and Can You Feel It (UK #6) have all been certified silver (250.000) by the BPI cumulating 1 million sales.

This accurate chart proves how illusional are the stories of 1 billion sales stuck to artists such as Elvis or Sinatra.

Sinatra has sold about 4 million singles in the UK and certainly not that many albums. He's been outsold by the Spice Girls who needed only about 2 years to shift almost twice as many singles.

Elvis has sold 19.3 million singles in almost 50 years by charting 120 singles (not counting his re-issues), averaging approx. 150.000 copies sold per singles releases.
Someone like Madonna needed only 20 years and 58 charting singles to sell 14.5 million singles (in spite of being a bigger selling albums artist than Presley).

The Beatles and Abba numbers are truly impressive, for they'd charted only 33 and 25 singles to reach these totals, avering 600.000 and 400.000 copies per singles respectively.

Nevertheless, I'm also happy to see George Michael having sold 12 + million singles (5.3 with Wham and 6.8 on his own). It shows how UK loves him.

King Of Pop Beats the January Blues as 'Number Ones' Re-enters the USA and British Album Charts

Created: Tuesday, 22 February 2005

It's no surprise that January has long been regarded as the darkest month of the year due to fading Christmas memories, foul weather, debt, etc. For the King Of Pop, however, it was business as usual as January saw the artist's Number Ones album re-enter both the USA and British album charts while simultaneously lengthening it's stellar 63 week+ consecutive chart run in Australia.

Meanwhile, in a follow up to last month's report, additional 2004 year-end chart information reveals the artist racked up extra honors Stateside as his multi-platinum Number Ones DVD ranked as the 5th Best Selling Music Video of the Year while over in the UK, for the second year in a row, Michael Jackson was the #1 solo catalog artist of 2004 with the most titles on the UK End Of Year Catalog Chart.

USA

With sales of approximately 60,000 units** for the month of January, Michael Jackson's library of Epic/Sony era material continued to demonstrate it's enduring appeal in the United States. In fact, Jackson's Number Ones album re-entered the Billboard 200 on January 13th posting three consecutive weeks of increased sales climbing 177-170-162. With combined CD/DVD sales of over 30,000 units for the month, the Number Ones project continued to roll forward in the USA as the platinum* album and triple platinum* DVD amassed 24 and 46 weeks respectively on the charts.

In other Number Ones news, Billboard's End Of Year 2004 video survey yielded more kudos for the King Of Pop as the aforementioned Number Ones DVD came in at #5 on the Top Comprehensive Music Videos Sales chart and #12 on the Top Music Video sales chart - an impressive showing in light of the fact that, according to p2pnet.net, the Number Ones DVD was Sony Music's top selling music video DVD worldwide for 2003.***

And finally, January wouldn't be complete without mentioning that the artist's legendary mainstay on the R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Chart Thriller amassed its 320th week on the chart shifting an additional 14,000 units for the month.

UK

The United States wasn't the only territory that saw a surge in January sales for Jackson's Number Ones album. In fact, the artist's British fans outdid their U.S. counterparts by moving the album back into the Top 75 on January 2nd with a monthly chart performance that looked exactly like this: 53-48-56-64. The 5X platinum* album has now amassed a cumulative 10 months inside the Top 75 Album Chart.

In other news, leading British trade publication Musicweek yielded more great news for the King Of Pop on 1st January as, for the second year in a row, Michael Jackson was the #1 solo catalog artist in the UK. In a repeat of 2003's chart performance, Jackson had the most titles on the UK End Of Year 2004 Catalog Chart with the same three albums in the same order: Thriller improved 9-6, Off The Wall slipped 16-17 and Bad stumbled 22-47, with sales of 134,729, 91,675 and 56,209, respectively. Interestingly, 1979's Off The Wall was one of the oldest titles on the list.

With sales of 660,000 albums for 2004 (excluding sales of Jackson 5/Jacksons releases), Michael Jackson was the UK's 30th Best Selling Albums Artist of 2004. Thanks to such an impressive showing in 2004, Jackson was the highest climber of the year on The Guinness British Hit Singles and Albums book which ranks artists every year according to how many weeks they have spent in the UK singles and albums charts. He is now number eight.

Australia

In keeping with it's uninterrupted 16 month chart run, Michael Jackson's triple platinum* Number Ones retained another five weeks on the ARIA Urban Album Chart in January. The album remained fixed in the Top 20 and charted as follows: 14-12-17-13-17. Elsewhere on the same chart, the gold certified The Very Best Of The Jacksons album continued treading with a 32-37-dropout-39-38 chart run for the month.

Living up to it's title as Australia's #1 Best Selling Music DVD of 2004, Jackson's 8X platinum Number Ones DVD also flexed it's chart muscle in the Top 30 as follows: 20-26-18-13-18. The title has now spent an impressive 59 weeks on the ARIA Top 40 Music DVD Chart.

Summary

Thanks to a successful January chart run coupled with additional End Of Year 2004 chart news, the new year kicked off nicely for the King Of Pop. With February already in full gear, it's worth noting that Jackson's Number Ones album posted its fifth consecutive week of increased sales in the USA two weeks ago - up 41% selling 9,198 units.

And the record continues to spin.

Hey guys - Another solid week at retail (post Valentine's Day) as Michael Jackson shifted approximately another 18,000 units* in the USA last week.

Although Number Ones slipped out of the Billboard 200, it likely still made the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Album Chart (still need to confirm that.)

Note: The #200 album on this week's chart Keith Sweat's Best Of Keith: Sweat Make sold 6,609 units while Number Ones shifted 5,889 units. Therefore, if Number Ones sold another 721 units, it would have made the Top 200.

Hey guys - Here's a little treat. I was able to get some information from this week's UK Top 200 Album Chart (whereas normally the UK Top 75 Album Chart is only available.)

UK

Number Ones - UK Top 200 Album Chart
Week #65 (20/02/05): #120
Week #66 (27/02/05): #136

Thriller - UK Top 200 Album Chart
Week #276 (27/02/05): #185 (Re-Entry)

Hey guys - Another relatively steady week at retail as Michael Jackson shifted approximately another 17,000 units* in the USA last week.

You'll notice that sales in general dropped in comparison to last week, the two notable exceptions being Bad and Dangerous which experienced a 39% and 25% sales increase respectively. Perhaps the BET Michael Jackson Marathon had a positive affect on these two titles?

Elsewhere, although Number Ones sold 5,648 copies last week, it remains outside of the Billboard 200. However, it is still placing near the outside of the chart since the #200 album sold approximately 6,300 copies.

You'll note near the bottom of this post, this week's UK and Australia chart information is included.

Hey guys - Another steady week at retail as Michael Jackson shifted over 15,000 units* in the USA last week.

Sales in general were down across the board this week for all artists so no big deal. The only exception being Mariah Carey who made notable percentage gains due to the promotion surrounding her upcoming album (Oprah, Making of the Video, video premiere probably aiding, etc.)

You'll notice Number Ones sold 4,740 copies last week. The #200 album on the Billboard 200 Pitbull's M.I.A.M.I sold 5,967 copies.

BTW, this information is late but you might be interested to know that The One (DVD) was certified GOLD (50,000) by the RIAA back on June 25th, 2004.

February Fever for The King Of Pop

no1salbum.gif

Created: Friday, 11 March 2005

For chart watchers and music lovers, the month of February is generally anticipated for two reasons. The first being the annual Grammy Awards telecast which showcases both established and breaking artists on a national stage for one night. The second being the pre-Valentine's week sales surge which finds a number of consumers flocking to the record stores in pursuit of gifts for their romantic loved ones.

For Michael Jackson, it was the latter which largely contributed to the artist's notable increase in domestic February sales as his platinum* Number Ones album shot back up the Billboard 200 during the pre-Valentine's weeks while other titles in his catalog similarily experienced a sales boost.

In other news, the United Kingdom yielded even more accolades for the King Of Pop as three of his music videos landed at #1, #7, and #12 respectively on Channel 4's nationwide vote to find the 100 Greatest Pop Videos of all time. Likewise, in a separate poll conducted by BBC Radio 1, Michael Jackson landed a Top 3 placing in the search to name the Greatest No.1 singles ever in the UK. The month ended on an even higher note as, according to figures released by Channel 4, Michael Jackson was named the 6th Best Selling UK Singles Artist ever.

Elsewhere around the world, the Number Ones project lengthened it's durable chart run in Australia as the CD and DVD each amassed their 66th and 62nd week on the charts respectively.

USA

With cumulative February sales of over 75,000 units**, Michael Jackson's catalog of Epic material scored a 25% increase over the previous month. Thanks to a renewed interest in the artist's Number Ones album, Jackson re-entered the album charts on January 20th and posted four consecutive weeks of increased sales climbing evenutally to #122 and #66 on the Billboard 200 and Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart respectively. With combined CD/DVD sales of approximately 40,000 units for the month, Number Ones' healthy resurgence gave the artist and his multi-platinum endeavour another reason to smile.

Elsewhere on the charts, Thriller remained locked inside the Top 20 of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Chart selling over 17,000 copies for the month. It's worth noting that the biggest selling album of all time has now amassed over 320 weeks on the R&B chart.

Honorable mentions must also go to both Jackson's Bad and Dangerous which, thanks to BET's Michael Jackson: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough eight hour marathon on February 20th, posted a 39% and 25% sales increase respectively the following week. Combined, the albums shifted approximately 3,000 units for the month.

UK

On February 7th, the King of Pop received even more good news as twenty-two years after it's groundbreaking release on television screens worldwide, Thriller was once again voted the greatest music video of all time according to a nationwide vote conducted by Channel 4 ranking the Top 100 Greatest Pop Videos ever. With three films eligible to compete, Jackson not only topped the chart but also placed two other videos in the Top 20 with Billie Jean at #7 and Scream (Jackson's legendary duet with sister Janet Jackson) at #12.

Likewise, after the 1000th #1 single was notched up in the UK, a separate poll conducted in January by BBC Radio 1 to find the Greatest #1 singles ever resulted in a #3 placing for Michael Jackson's classic "Billie Jean" (only to be outdone by Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Iron Maiden's "Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter".) Of the 25,000 votes counted, Jackson was the most voted for male artist.

Wrapping up the month, Michael Jackson was also named Britain's 6th Best Selling Singles Artist ever based on another Channel 4 ranking which counted down the definitive list of the 50 biggest-selling artists of all time, drawing on UK singles sales from the past 50 years. It's worth noting that Jackson's cumulative single sales total of 11,310,958 units excluded his work with the Jackson 5/Jacksons leaving one to wonder exactly how much higher Jackson would have placed had his entire career of single sales been considered.

Australia

Knotching it's 66th week on the ARIA Urban Album Chart, Michael Jackson's triple platinum* Number Ones continued it's Top 20 trajectory charting as follows: 17-18-18-17. Likewise, the 8X platinum* Number Ones DVD exercised it's endurance on the ARIA Top Music DVD Chart ringing up it's 62nd week on the chart and performing as follows: 19-24-31-15.

Summary

From the 40,000 Number Ones surge in the United States to the numerous UK polls/listings in which Jackson placed ever so prominently to the uninterrupted 60+ week Australian Number Ones chart run, February was indeed a feverish month for the King Of Pop. Looking ahead, March has already begun with two Jackson albums entrenched in the UK Top 200 Album Chart along with the Number Ones DVD holding firmly in the Top 20 in both the USA and Australia.

And the record continues to spin.

Hey guys - Another week, another approximately 15,000 units* shifted in the USA by Michael Jackson last week.

As you can see, Thriller made a nice increase along with the Number Ones DVD. To give you an idea where Number Ones stands in relation to other albums, the album shifted 4,106 units last week while the #200 on the Billboard 200 (Ruben Studdard's I Need An Angel ) shifted 5,379 units.
