Gilmour dethrones Bailey Rae
13 March 2006 - 10:12:33

Although the EMI group has frequently registered back-to-back number ones in the 50-year history of the album chart - most recently in February of 2005, when Parlophone act Athlete's Tourist dethroned Virgin's The Chemical Brothers' Push The Button - the EMI label has never had back-to-back number ones until this week, writes Alan Jones

It achieves this historic first thanks to David Gilmour's third solo album On An Island replacing rising new star Corinne Bailey Rae's self-titled debut at the summit.

Gilmour turned 60 last Monday (6th), the same day he released his third solo album, On An Island. It earned him a belated birthday present on Sunday, when it debuted at number one with first week sales of 83,060. Gilmour's first, self-titled solo album peaked at number 17 in 1979, and his only subsequent solo effort, About Face, reached number 21 in 1984.

Gilmour's album was helped to its lofty perch by a blitz of media coverage, including a unique Gilmour BBC Radio 2 concert being added to BBC TV's interactive service (with pictures) for a week. As neither of his previous solo albums reached the Top 10, it's a major triumph for Gilmour, which undoubtedly owes something to Pink Floyd's much trumpeted reunion at last year's Live8 concert, which improved his profile considerably. For Gilmour, it's his first number one since Floyd's The Division Bell debuted at the summit in 1994.

Meanwhile, although she was dethroned by her labelmate, Corinne Bailey Rae's album continues to sell at a fair clip. It shifted a further 67,122 copies last week - 38% down on its debut week - to take second place in the chart. Bailey Rae's second single Put Your Records On dips 3-5 on its third week on the singles chart, attracting a further 16,147 buyers to lift its 20 day cume to 67,123 sales. It also takes over at the top of the airplay chart, and is being given enormous support by the BBC's two behemoths Radio One, where it was aired 26 times last week and was third most-played, and Radio Two, where its tally of 23 plays outshone all other singles.

Gilmour and Bailey Rae's albums helped artist album sales to remain above the two million mark for the second week in a row, down 0.5% week-on-week at 2,015,232. There are also Top 10 debuts for new albums from Andrea Bocelli and Van Morrison.

Bocelli has already had four Top 10 albums and Amore is another Top Tenner for the top tenor, debuting this week at number four on sales of 32,124. Given a boost by Bocelli's appearance on the first in a new series of Parkinson on ITV1, where he sang Somos Novis (It's Impossible) with Christina Aguilera, it achieves the third best first week of 11 charted Bocelli albums since his 1997 debut, being bettered only by 200 1's Ciel Di Toscana and the following year's Sentimento, which opened with sales of 46,334 and 36,077 respectively.

Esteemed veteran Van Morrison, now 61, registers the 32nd chart album of his career with Pay The Devil, which debuts at number eight on sales of 20,844. The follow-up to last May's Magic Time - which was his highest charting album ever, reaching number three - Pay The Devil comprises primarily of covers of songs made famous by the likes of Hank Williams, Emmylou Harris and Conway Twitty, and is Morrison's first country album. It debuts at number one on the country chart, replacing 60 year old Dolly Parton's Those Were The Days.

Becoming the 101st album to top the 1m sales mark in the 21st century, Madonna's Confessions On A Dancefloor sold 18,032 copies last week as it drifted 12-13, taking its 17 week cume to 1,014,440. It's Madonna's second album on the list, trailing 2000's Music, which has so far sold 1, 594,045 copies. 2001's hits set GHV2 will get there one day, and has so far sold 804,076 but don't hold your breath for Madonna's last studio album before Confessions - American Life has sold just 328,629 copies, including only 42 last week.

Singles sales eased a little last week, falling just 3% to 1,121,137.

The shortfall over the previous week was largely down to a big fall in sales of the number one.

It's still Chico time, as the Welsh-born Moroccan, who finished fifth in the latest season of X-Factor, continues atop the singles chart with his debut single, albeit with sales tumbling by 43% to 29,258.

Chico's biggest challenge came not from a new release but from Calfornian band Orson's debut single No Tomorrow, which takes advantage of a weak market to jump 5-2 , despite the fact its sales are off 5.9% to 21,030.. The first single from upcoming album Brig ht Idea, due for release in May, No Tomorrow is getting rapidly increasing support from broadcasters, and jumps 11-8 on the radio airplay chart, and 29-20 on the TV airplay chart.

The Sugababes survive their change in personnel - the departure of founder member Mutya and the arrival of Amelie - to register their 15th hit single, Red Dress, which debuts at number four on sales of 18,210.,

The highest of only two new entries to the Top 10 , it's the third straight top five hit from the Sugababes' current album Taller In More Ways, following the chart topping Push The Button, and Ugly, which peaked at number three. Taller In More Ways thus becomes the first of Sugababes' four albums to spawn three top five hits. Its sales to date are 736,687, and it's on target to beat their previous best seller, Angels With Dirty Faces (863,321 sales)

It's less than two years since KanYe West made the jump from producer to artist, and he has already had nine hits in the latter role, including Touch The Sky, which debuts this week at number six on sales of 14,420. Based around a sample from Curtis Mayfield's classic Move On Up, it is the fourth hit from West's Late Registration album, which has sold 548,044 copies to date, and will pass the 554,482 sales of his debut The College Dropout to become his biggest seller this week.

Just outside the Top 10, there are new entries at 11 and 12, from Michael Jackson and Shapeshifters.

After a poor start, the Michael Jackson dualdisc releases continue to pick up steam. First chart eligible single Don't Stop Till You Get Enough reached number 17 a fortnight ago, while Rock With You debuted at number 15 last week. Now, Billie Jean debuts at number 11, with first week sales of 7,856 - 8.4% more than the 7,244 start of Rock With You and 20.7% ahead of Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough's 6,509 opening. Next up , Beat It is out today (13th), followed by Bad next Monday (20th).

The Shapeshifters sold 6,973 copies of Incredible, their third hit, to debut at number 12. Shapeshifters topped the chart in 2004 with Lola's Theme, and reached number 10 last year with Back To Basics. Incredible is on their new album Sound Advice, which is released a week on Monday.

Finally, it's no secret and no surprise that airplay fuels sales. It's working for Orson, whose No Tomorrow shares most-played honours on Radio One, with 28 spins last week but appears not to be working for the other record with 28 plays, Joey Negro's Make A Move On Me, which debuts on the sales chart this week at number 47. But appearances, in this case, are deceptive. Although 8 12-inch copies of Negro's single escaped last week, the 12-inch and a CD single of Make A Move On Me aren't scheduled to hit retail until today (13th), and the rest the former number one club play h it's 1,913 sales last week were digital downloads which are now allowed to count towards the chart a week prior to physical formats being issued. Expect Negro's single to take a massive leap upwards a week hence.

CHART COMMENTARY from JAMES MASTERTON
13/03/06

It's STILL Chico time. It will annoy as many people as it delights, but the Number One single holds firm this week as Chico spends a second week at the top of the chart. Entertainingly some people misinterpreted my comments about the record last week and wondered if I really believed that Chico was a brand new star in the making. Of course he isn't, he's a novelty act on the same level as the Cheeky Girls. Nonetheless his Number One single is still a worthwhile event and as I said last week, he was a worthy contender on the X Factor. He may not have been the best singer but as an entertainer he was outstanding. Just try sleeping through this record in the same way you do one by, say, Shayne Ward.

Taking the runners up slot this week is not a new entry but actually one of last week's older hits. 'No Tomorrow' by Orson continues to grow its appeal and its sales hold firm, giving the single a useful leg-up to the Number 2 slot.

That means that the biggest new hit of the week has to creep in at Number 4. 'Red Dress' effectively marks the chart debut for the Sugababes Mark III. For those not familiar with their history, the Mark I version consisted of Keisha, Mutya and Siobhan and lasted for one well received album on London records back in 2000. After they were dropped by their label, Siobhan left and was replaced by Heidi. Island records picked the girls up and the rest is pretty much history, a string of Number One hits swiftly following. Last December of course Mutya left the group just prior to the release of their last hit 'Ugly', her place swiftly taken by new member Amelle - and thus leaving Keisha Buchanan as the only original member left.

The only complication of course is the fact that the girls were in the middle of promoting the 'Taller In Many Ways' album, recorded with the Mark II lineup. Easily sorted - buy the album now and you will pick up a new version which features several tracks with re-recorded vocals featuring Amelle. 'Red Dress' is one such track and lands on the chart now with ease. Naturally you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference unless you heard both versions side by side, the whole point of replacing the singer being to ensure the brand stays alive and their fanbase intact.

Those with long memories will recall that this isn't the first time a girl group has replaced one member with another in the middle of promotion. The first Atomic Kitten album 'Right Now' had been in the shops for several months in 2001 when Kerry Katona left the group to make babies. Replaced by Jenny Frost, the album was also re-released with a combination of old tracks and ones remade with new vocals. Going further back, in 1988 Bananarama replaced Siobhan Fahey with Jacquie O'Sullivan and released a re-recorded 'I Want You Back' as a single, the original version remaining on the 'Wow' album which had come out a year before.

Back to the present then and the only other new song in the Top 10 this week is Kanye West's 'Touch The Sky, the fourth single to be taken from the 'Late Registration' album and the followup to 'Heard 'Em Say' which made a comparatively disappointing Number 22 back in December. The single is still in direct competition with 'Gold Digger' which continues to hand around the Top 40, this week rising to Number 38 a full 25 weeks since it was first released.

Meanwhile just outside the Top 10 the Michael Jackson re-release programme moves up a gear - slightly. This week we leave the 'Off The Wall' era behind and move onto the 'Thriller' years. The promotion for what would eventually become the biggest selling album of all time actually got off to a low-key start at the end of 1982 with the strange decision to release the rather wimpy 'The Girl Is Mine' as the first single. Indeed the album was in danger of sinking without a trace when Jackson was invited to perform at a special concert to mark the 25th birthday of Motown records. His performance is now the stuff of legend as remained onstage after his brothers had left and performed the intense 'Billie Jean' in black fedora and jacket, debuting the dance move that would become his trademark - the moonwalk. The single shot to Number One on both sides of the Atlantic and received even more attention thanks to its famous Steve Barron video which escaped even MTVs famous reluctance to air songs by black acts. The track's reappearance this week actually marks its first time on the chart since those heady days of 1983 and although it may not have returned to the Top 10 its presence is a very welcome one indeed. The idea that an expensive video could help sell a song is one that Jackson would return to...

Just behind Jackson at Number 12 are the Shapeshifters. The duo topped the charts back in 2004 with the memorable 'Lola's Theme', following it up with the slightly less inspired 'Back To Basics' almost exactly a year ago. Their third hit is 'Incredible' which sadly fails to emulate the Top 10 success of the previous two. I can't really explain why, which is annoying as I'm supposed to know these things.

In at Number 13 this week are the forever underrated Placebo with a new single in advance of what will be their sixth album. The album made headlines earlier in the year after an online leak threatened to derail plans for its release. Despite this, the lead single 'Because I Want You' makes a solid chart debut this week, its placing enough to make it their biggest chart hit since 'Bitter End' made Number 12 back in 2003. Their last Top 10 hit seems ever further away of course, 'You Don't Care About Us' their last single to break into the upper reaches in late 1998. The album 'Meds' is set to hit the shops this week and is well worth the money - assuming you weren't one of the ones to pick up a pirate copy in January of course.

Now take a note of this next hit for in years to come it will be the subject of pub quizzes. What was the first single to make the UK charts before it was even released? The answer is 'Pump It' by the Black Eyed Peas which actually hits the shops this week but which becomes the first beneficiary of the new chart rules which have allowed its online sales to count towards the chart a week early. Thus while for the moment it appears the single could rank as their smallest to date, the distinct possibility exists that it will rise into the Top 10 next week once the CD single becomes available.

If the Black Eyed Peas are the highest profile beneficiary of the new rules, the most high profile "victim" is James Blunt, whose long-deleted 'You're Beautiful' vanishes from the chart in what would have been its 41st week. I'm being bombarded with mails from people berating the Official Charts Company for causing this to happen, misguidedly so as if you want to paint anyone as villains it is the record company who deleted the single last summer. You'll note that many other long-running hits from last year are still kicking around as they remain on the catalogue. Daniel Powter's 'Bad Day' is this week at Number 77, and better still 'I Like The Way' by the Bodyrockers which is at Number 98 this week and looks set to only vanish when the 52 week rule catches it at the end of April. Note as well the appearance of James Blunt's 'Wisemen' at Number 54 which has its "weeks on chart" count reset to one and appears with a new catalogue number. The reason? It is re-released next week and charts on online sales thanks to, er, the new chart rules.

Released for real this week is 'Like You', the latest single from the not so little anymore Bow Wow, here in tandem with former Number One hitmaker Ciara. It is the rapper's first chart hit since 'Let Me Hold You' hit Number 27 in October last year and his biggest chart single since he appeared on JoJo's 'Baby It's You' which went Top 10 in 2004. Ciara hasn't been seen on the chart since August last year when 'Oh' made Number 4. In her four chart hits so far she hasn't actually had a proper solo credit, appearing either alongside another act, or in this case as the guest start on someone else's single.

Finally in the Top 20 this week, Craig David grabs a new entry with 'Unbelievable' which for the record (I get the feeling that we're going to have to note this for every new entry from now on) did hit the shops last week. It's Number 18 placing thus makes it a rather disappointing followup to 'Don't Love You No More' which hit Number 4 at the back end of last year. At the very least it maintains his 100% strike rate of Top 10 hits although a failure to climb next week will make this single his smallest ever chart hit.

Gilmour's 'Island' Grabs No. 1 In U.K.

March 13, 2006, 10:35 AM ET

Paul Sexton, London

David Gilmour's third solo album, "On an Island" (EMI), powered to No. 1 on the U.K. album chart yesterday (March 13), becoming his first chart-topper in his own name. It's also the first Pink Floyd-related No. 1 since the band's live set, "Pulse," hit the top in June 1995.

Gilmour's previous solo releases, issued while Pink Floyd was still an active unit, fared more modestly. "David Gilmour" reached No. 17 in 1978 and "About Face" peaked at No. 21 in 1984. The singer/guitarist and his band, which includes Floyd colleague Richard Wright and Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera, started a sold-out European tour Friday in Dortmund, Germany.

Gilmour replaced another EMI artist, Corinne Bailey Rae, at the top of the album listing after Rae debuted there with her self-titled release last week. Andrea Bocelli's "Amore" (Sugar/UCJ) was a new entry at No. 4 and there was a No. 8 start for Van Morrison's new country-themed album "Pay the Devil" (Exile/Polydor).

On the singles chart, former "X Factor" contestant Chico started a second week at No. 1 with "It's Chico Time" (Sony BMG), ahead of a 5-2 climb by Orson with "No Tomorrow" (Mercury). Sugababes opened at No. 4 with "Red Dress" (Universal Island), their first single since new member Amelle Berranah replaced Mutya Buena in the lineup.

"Billie Jean," the third in Sony BMG's series of Dual Disc singles by Michael Jackson, performed better than its predecessors, starting at No. 11 compared to No. 17 two weeks ago for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and No. 15 last week for "Rock With You." Enduring rock trio Placebo arrived at No. 13 with "Because I Want You," the first single from its fifth studio album, "Meds."

There was a No. 16 entry for Black Eyed Peas' "Pump It" (A&M), while "Like You" (Columbia) by Bow Wow featuring Ciara entered at No. 17. Craig David's "Unbelievable" (Warner Bros.) bowed at No. 18.

Across Europe, James Blunt's "Back to Bedlam" (Atlantic) leads the European Top 100 Albums chart for the eighth consecutive and ninth aggregate week, while Madonna leads the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles roundup for a second week with "Sorry" (Warner Bros.).

CHART COMMENTARY from JAMES MASTERTON
20/03/06

It's a fascinating Top 3 this week on the UK singles chart, albeit maybe not for the best of reasons. Now normally I'm not one to pay that much attention to actual sales figures, the chart books of the future will after all give no clue as to exactly who sold what, but the extraordinary set of figures that have resulted in this week's Top 3 cannot go without comment. According to Music Week this week, a mere 334 copies separates the Top 3 singles this week, with the Number 2 and Number 3 hits separated but just 5 copies.

The unlikely winners of this 3-way tussle turn out to be Orson who in their third week on the chart see the catchy 'No Tomorrow' ascend to the top to give them their very first Number One single. Sad to report though that they do so by breaking an unwanted record. By selling just under 18,000 copies this week, 'No Tomorrow' ranks as the smallest selling Number One single in chart history, a smaller total even than Elvis' 'Jailhouse Rock' which topped 20,000 in January last year. Whilst this isn't exactly cause for alarm and is caused mainly by a lack of prominent new releases from major stars, it is still a disappointing sight and one that is certain to prompt more than its fair share of doom-laden headlines. The underlying fact remains that with online sales factored in, the market for "single tracks" is actually very healthy at the present time, the only problem being that the presence of online stores has expanded the available inventory from a hundred or so singles to several thousand. Thus most sales are spread over a wide range of product rather than being concentrated on those near the top of the singles chart - the result is the chart you see today.

Meanwhile inside that Top 3, the Black Eyed Peas leap 16-3 as 'Pump It' arrives in the shops on CD. As expected this then saves the single from the ignominy of becoming their smallest hit since their rise to fame began in 2003, their chart career overall of course dating back to 1998 when 'Joints And Jam' rose unnoticed to Number 53.

The highest sort-of debut on the chart this week goes to Girls Aloud whose machine-gun approach to singles releases means that 'Whole Lotta History' becomes their fourth hit single in the last seven months and their third in the last four. The single is only a "sort of" new entry as it actually charted at Number 80 last week on online sales alone and so thus technically posts a 74 place rise to land at Number 6. The one fly in the ointment is that Music Week still only publish the chart down to position 75 and it is only these positions which are considered canon by the record books. This will almost certainly mean that the 72-2 leap made by Steps' 'It's The Way You Make Me Feel' in January 2001 will remain the biggest climb in chart history. As for the Girls Aloud record, well it maintains their 100% record, giving them a 12th straight Top 10 hit. It also reverses the decline in their chart fortunes which saw their last single 'See The Day' hit an all time low of Number 9, although 'Biology' remains the only track from their current album to have penetrated the Top 5.

Also new in the shops this week is Joey Negro's 'Make A Move On Me' which makes a canonical 47-11 leap up the chart to debut in the Top 40. Dave Lee invented the pseudonym back in the late 80s in order to circumvent the inverse racism of many house clubs of the time who refused to accept that British producers could make club tracks to rival their New York counterparts. This new single marks the first chart outing for that persona since he hit Number 8 with 'Must Be The Music' in early 2000. Lee's best run of hits came four years ago when as Jakatta he notched up three straight Top 10 singles, including the Number 3 hit 'American Dream' which turned the 'American Beauty' theme into a club anthem.

The changing shape of the market caused by the new chart rules means that the biggest legitemate new entry of the week is at an uncharacteristically low Number 13 - but even this is a single that has aleady charted once before. Ray J's 'One Wish' first came out towards the end of last year but could only peak at Number 26. Re-released now, the single makes a rather more impressive debut and helps Ray J to his biggest solo hit single to date. The R&B star's best chart showing actually came back in 2001 when he duetted with big sister Brandy on a cover of Phil Collins' 'Another Day In Paradise', that single hitting Number 4.

Early sales predictions suggested that Michael Jackson was finally heading for the Top 10 with his latest dualdisc re-release but it is frustration once again as 'Beat It' can only limp to Number 15. Originally a hit back in 1983 it was the followup to 'Billie Jean' and came close to emulating its chart-topping predecessor, eventually peaking at Number 3. It was the first of what came to be a regular token rock track on a Jackson album, the single featuring a famous guitar performance from Eddie Van Halen. As was becoming the habit, the single also came complete with a lavish video, this time entirely bankrolled by Jackson himself. It's gang warfare motif was one that he would revist a few years later - or next week according to the chronology of these reissues.

Just below at Number 16 is a new entry/climber from Beverley Knight whose 'Piece Of My Heart' valuts 93-16 as the CD single appears in the shops. Now a ten year chart veteran, Beverley Knight's latest album is a hits collection, which comes complete with the obligatory new track or two - one of which is this single. It hits the chart exactly one year to the week since her last single 'Keep This Fire Burning' which also hit Number 16. Forever it seems on the verge of a big breakthrough, Knight has only ever had two Top 10 hits, although it is fitting that these are two of her best tracks - 'Shoulda Woulda Coulda' which made Number 10 in March 2002 and 'Come As You Are' which hit Number 9 in June 2004.

The parade of mid-table new entries continues with another track taken from a Greatest Hits collection. This time the deserving recipients are Massive Attack who duly land at Number 17 with the well received 'Live With Me' which features a vocal from folk legend Terry Callier. It's their first Top 40 single in a little over three years, last single 'Special Cases' hitting Number 15 in March 2003. Just like Beverley Knight the group are the subject of much acclaim, have released albums hailed as classics but have always flattered to deceive as far as the singles chart is concerned. All-time classic 'Unfinished Sympathy' actually made a mere Number 13 back in 1991 and their biggest ever chart hit is 'Teardrop' which took them to Number 10 in 1998.

Fresh from topping the Hot 100 in America, new R&B star Ne-Yo makes a UK chart debut at Number 18 with 'So Sick'. Just like the Black Eyed Peas single last week, this is a track which has made the chart on the strength of download sales alone, such is the anticipation for its release. The CD is in the shops this week which will almost certainly see the track gain a Top 10 placing in seven days time.

Two of the biggest female stars in US pop line up next. First up is Hilary Duff with 'Fly' which ranks as a disappointing followup to the joyously catchy 'Wake Up' which was a Number 7 hit as long ago as last November. Oddly enough the singles from her second album are following the same pattern as her first - her chart account being opened in 2003 with the Number 9 hit 'So Yesterday' only for the followup 'Come Clean' to make a more disappointing Number 18. There is similar disappointment for Kelly Clarkson who just misses the Top 20 with 'Walk Away', although she does at least have the excuse that it is the fourth single from her album 'Breakaway', the previous three all having been Top 10 smashes.

Finally this week marks a watershed in the chart career of James Blunt's 'Wisemen' which upon its re-release rises 54-23 to become a Top 40 hit for the first time ever. The single first hit the chart almost exactly a year ago this week but could only reach Number 44. Last summer as 'You're Beautiful' soared up the charts, online sales of the earlier single propelled it back into the charts whereupon it spent the next few months hovering around the cusp of the Top 75, hitting a peak of Number 63 in the week of June 18th last year. Last week the single gained a new catalogue number and appeared again at Number 54 in anticipation of its shop re-release and so this week the track at long long last becomes a Top 40 hit. It is far from James Blunt's biggest single but next to the now departed 'You're Beautiful' it is almost certainly his most well-traveled.
