Michael Jackson’s Halloween - New animated special coming this fall

Just watched it...

Not very impressed I must admit.

The music seems like it's just thrown in without any thoughts to when and why... - Nice with MJ music of course, but it was just very random whenever a song came...

Animation was not great and the story was very very thin...

I hope children will enjoy it - and adult of course... But it looked like a school project thrown together on a single week without much thought...

I enjoyed it and I am a GROWN woman.

I did not see Stranger Series anywhere when watching the shows on that time slot. Word Series #1 and MJ #2. No "Stranger".

That's because Stranger Things doesn't air on traditional television. It airs on Netflix, it's basically the biggest show of the world's biggest streaming service.

I agree. I think this "Historic" is one of those fans that are historically negative about everything the Estate comes up with. How about being grateful and happy that MJ's estate is doing a great job in promulgating his legacy.

It's always embarrassing when someone who doesn't know who they're talking about waltzes in and talks like they do know who or what they're talking about, and in this case that person is you Tricia! Like it's actually quite shallow of you to think I dislike everything the Estate does because I'm critical of one project.

Anyone who's seen me post for a while (which isn't hard, I'm reasonably active on here) would know I'm actually quite Pro-Estate. I think the only projects by the Estate I've rather disliked are the Michael project and the Pitbull remix of Bad. Everything else I've either quite enjoyed (This Is It, Vision, Bad 25, Xscape, Immortal, MJ One) or simply don't really care for (OTW Doco, Scream album). Hell go see the Scream thread, I'm pretty defensive in there.

I think on the whole the Estate are doing an excellent job of keeping Michael Jackson's legacy going. However I'm not going to praise them for producing something terrible just because it's a great idea poorly executed or it has Michael's name on it. What kind of low standard is that? No, I'm going to praise them when they do a good job and criticise them when they do a crap job. That's how I treat everything I enjoy. The Michael Jackson Estate and brand name are not exempt from criticism.

It’s hard to believe what some people post. It’s a fricken cartoon. They did a decent job what do people expect geez. I guess I’m done for a while I’m too old to read about nit picking a cartoon it’s for kids for god sakes. See you all when a new project comes up.

I agree that some people can be overly critical regardless of the quality. However, in my opinion, just because its animated doesn't mean it doesn't have to live up to any kind of standard of quality right? I also don't agree with the argument that because something is aimed at a younger demographic that it doesn't have to be a quality product. Many of the best works of art from film and music to books and games are aimed at a younger demographic or for all ages and yet they maintain a certain level of artistic merit and integrity. With regards to this show specifically, I felt that they did a great job with the design, the voice acting, and many other aspects of the production. However, the script was very poor. And it's easily noticeable. It's why you can watch a 3 hour movie and stay engaged yet watch a 2 hour movie and come out of it clueless. I think if it had a solid script and everything else was poor, I could have given it a pass, given the limited budget. But the script was weak, and the one thing it had going for it, the music..was very poorly utilized. It's like someone was just skipping through an iTunes playlist the whole time. I usually try to see the best in any piece of work and stay positive as I know a lot of work usually goes into these kinds of things but at the same time, I have to agree with HIStoric. Just because the estate slapped MJ's name on it doesn't mean it's automatically a great product. As a matter of fact, same with MJ. The reason his albums have stood the test of time is because they were good, pure and simple, even if you had no idea who MJ was.

I liked it overall.. the animation was actually better than I expected.. the story was somewhat convoluted but my two kids (2, 8) and myself chuckled a few times and it was cool hearing all the MJ song clips... but I didn’t like how it had nothing to do with actual Halloween, besides some talking pumpkins.. I can’t rememver if they even mention the word “Halloween” or “trick or treat” at all.. other than that, we approve!

:dancingcat: IT MADE ME WANT TO DANCE!!!! :rockingstickman:

Will catch it today on Z Studio, an Indian cable tv channel :)

I really loved it. I thought it was well done and enjoyed the use of Michael's music. And the cartoon Michael. I've always wanted a cartoon Michael. But it makes me miss him all over again.

I guess if I had a criticism I'd say the animation moved in a weird sort of way that was nearly headache inducing. I don't know if it was a weird frame rate or what. But other than that, overall it was pretty magical with a good message. I definitely think Michael would have liked it. Good job Estate.

I wasn't overly impressed the first time so I gave it a 2nd go. It's not something I want to see again. I still love cartoons and animated films, but this was just poor. Very poor. As I say, hopefully the kids will like it, but if MJs name wasnt attached Id have turned it off.

There are way too many people here who are too sensitive when it comes to criticism. Get over it.

Watched this with my daughter (5 years old) and wife. Why Michael’s name is attached to this movie is beyond us. There is too much going on and the music seems randomly picked. What a waste. My daughter waited for Michael and eventually she lost interest. But then he came on at the end and we were all disappointed in the way hey animated him. My daughter said: “he doesn’t even look like him!!”

Glad people can enjoy this. But I simply can not. It’s a waste. They should’ve hired Pixar or Disney for this. Michael worked with Disney for the Captain EO movie.

This estate is simply not capable of taking care of michaels legacy. The intentions are ok, but the final result of every project seems to lack time and time again quality wise.

Again, this is a waste.

I really liked it and thought it does not deserve some of the negativity it got.

So glad it played in New Zealand, I really thought they would not consider us.

The only gripes was the cheesiness and cuteness of some of the scenes, but oh well it was aimed at kids.

Overall I found it heartwarming and very beautiful, it nearly made me cry when Michael appeared and then set all the zombies free. The songs made it even better, the dancing to Dangerous in the Pumpkin patch was cute and funky all in one.

I loved the MJ symbols and the Spiders were really fun, especially the general when he turns on to their side. the cat scientist was cool too and even better is that Pumpkin man the Spider and Cat Scientist are all actually Michael in pieces.

I really liked this and will buy the DVD if it ever comes out. I hope there are more.

8/10 - B+

Leading out of the Michael Jackson’s Halloween special (5.7 mil/1.1), MacGyver (6.4 mil/0.8) was steady. With a softer lead-in, Blue Bloods (8.1 mil/0.9) held steady in the demo while slipping to an all-time audience low.

CBS: A MICHAEL JACKSON’S HALLOWEEN special was the highest-rated non-sports telecast of the night at 1.1, up 0.3 from last week’s MACGYVER. That show shifted to 9PM for the night, and remained at last week’s 0.8. BLUE BLOODS held at 0.9.

1.1 for MJ's Halloween? CBS will be pleased with that!

Yet again the critics mentioning "Pixar" and "Disney"? No wonder they are disappointed. Do they not realise how much money and time goes into one of these movies?

This was a great debut to try out a themed MJ cartoon. Perhaps, as it's a success, there will be bigger and better to come in the future.

I'm glad the majority of people seemed to have enjoyed it, for the positivity it brings to MJ's legacy - in a musical and ideological sense.

I didn’t mind that there was no direct reference to Halloween in this animation film, as ‘trick or treat’ tends to degenerate into threats from large teenagers to damage your property if you don’t give them money, in certain UK locations!

Overall, I loved this animation, and until the ‘transformation’ scene I would have given it a good 9.7 out of ten. It made me cry (when MJ appeared) and I loved all the ‘Michael’ references. It was clear that the production team are fans, and packed in as much ‘Michael’ as possible :)

I thought there were a few ‘missed opportunities’, but I can understand why most of these points might have been difficult to overcome:

I was sorry that 'MJ's Halloween' wasn’t able to ‘trend’ heavily on Twitter, as worldwide coverage was patchy, and missed even English-speaking regions. (Like the 65 million UK population!) I’d happily buy the DVD, and hope that it will also be available either dubbed or with subtitles for non English-speaking countries.

I thought that the dog (Ichy / Icky!) could have had more character and a stronger story-arc, although he did push the story along quite well. I’d have liked to see him ‘transformed’ at the end, maybe with a nicer, freer (more playful) character.

The 'travelling lift' sequences were a bit dizzying, and didn't seem to have much of a link to Michael. It would have been good to maybe have the lift convert into a roller coaster cabin?

I would have liked to see the three ‘MJ’-linked characters display three distinct elements of MJ’s talent, but both ‘Hay man’ and ‘Meryweather’ seemed to be predominantly dancers. It would have been nice if one was more predominantly a singer. Franklin Stine seemed to portray ‘inventiveness’ quite well (and I liked the ‘cat / dog’ humour).

Sadly the last ‘missed opportunity’ (for me) puts this animation firmly in the ‘outdated’ category, and really spoiled the transformation scene. I had been thinking all along how clever it had been of the animators to make ‘Conformity’ such a typical ‘female plaything in entertainment’ figure. Triple digit chest size and hips, tiny waist, and lots of 1940’s ‘Jessica Rabbit’-style leg exposure. The younger female protagonist (Victoria) had been portrayed very well as ‘realistic and relatable’, so I looked forward to Conformity’s transformation into another ‘real’ woman. How totally disappointing and outdated her transformation turned out to be! Her enormous chest practically blotted out the screen as she woke up! And then she joined in with the ‘zombie dance’. Really, guys???? (I’m assuming there were no female animation ‘lead’ staff???) I wouldn’t want to show this animation to a young female relative as sending a message of ‘be yourself’. The message it sent to me was ‘women in entertainment are there as idealised playthings for men’. Aaaargh. Post Harvey Weinstein and #Metoo this message just doesn’t play any more.

I really longed for a post credit clip (where the outtakes usually go) showing the transformed Conformity ripping off her tiny corset, slapping a telephone on her head , climbing on a table and doing a mashup ‘Lady Gaga does BOTDF’ dance.
Ah well, another time maybe.

I’ll still enjoy re-watching this (at tea-time, with scones, pumpkin jam and (s)cream), but I’ll probably stop at the transformation scene, and imagine better days to come.

Not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but personally, I thought it was great

My only issue really was the length. It needed to be longer. I think they tried to pack too much in to an hour.

This made it too jumpy, there wasn't enough room for dialogue and the script therefore suffered. Sure, character animation could have been refined but that's just nit picking.

Overall myself at 37 and my children at 5 and 6 found it very enjoyable.

My Review REAL

Soundtrack & The Mix - 8/10
Storyline - 7/10
Sound FX - 8/10
Content - 5/10

Included - 28/40 = 7/10

Liked it, but can't say I loved it. The beginning and the ending were good, while the middle part had an Alice in Wonderland kinda feel to it.

I agree that the length - 45 minutes - is probably what kept this from being better as it sped from scene to scene.

One aspect about the plot that didn't sit quite right with me was when it was revealed that all three characters (pumpkin scarecrow, spider general, and the cat scientist) "were all Michael" all along. Let me preface this by saying I don't think this was the writer's intention.
So, I could see the pumpkin scarecrow being a part of Michael; he was a fun, lighthearted character. But there were aspects to the cat scientist character (initially collecting heads, brandishing a knife to the kids) and the spider general's initial threatening demeanor that I didn't feel comfortable seeing associated with Michael. Again, I don't think this was the writer's intention, they ended up showing Michael as a positive character in the end, but I could see how children could associate those aspects of the characters with Michael, especially during the sequence where they visually show all three of those characters encompassing as Michael.
Might be reading too much into it, but it was something I noticed and felt during the special. Does anyone else feel this way? Loved the special overall.

That's a good observation and I noticed it but didn't give it alot of thought at the time as there was so much going on. I'm guessing here, but perhaps it was to show that what appears to be threatening and scary is in fact the opposite. How Michael himself was portrayed in his life. But the story moved so fast that it wasn't shown properly.
