Michael - The Great Album Debate

Here's the thing, this wasn't marked by my teacher but rather an anonymous examiner. This grade was for my end-of-school exams. What's so shocking is that I did so well in the past and I've somehow botched it up for the real thing.

Then it is probably a question of originality. Lately, there has been too much hype about MJ. Since his death almost everyone has all of sudden become his biggest fan. Thus the subject wasn't maybe as intriguing as if you wrote about something unexpected, or remember what Mike used to say "the opposite of unexpected" in order to create the wow effect.

Sometimes we have to forget personal affection and empathy and try to give the best of ourselves by creating new things or at least by including unexpected elements. It is extremely and painfully difficult to explain how and why we're touched by MJ's magic with words. There are no words for that.

But if you create the wow effect and if the teacher asks you where does your inspiration come from, then you could proudly say: 'from Michael Jackson, he made me believe in magic'.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind for when I start college :) I'm taking part in an extra-curricular Creative Writing class, so I'll use your advice when I need to for that :D

I just knew that if I wrote about MJ for that question, I know I could channel all of my heart into it and try to create a really good piece with it. Hopefully, my teacher will look into it as he said and ask if the piece can be remarked for a possibility of a higher grade.

arklove and love is magical stop lurking and flirting together, let me join you. :p

In high school I wasn't that worried about marks. Some days I wasn't in the mood and had bad marks, some days I was fully inspired and had good marks. It's a human thing. When I was in good mood I was more worried if I could do better than the time before, when I was in bad mood all I wanted was to pass.

At the university I didn't care about marks, but I however had serious discussions with some professors who demanded futile things without even teaching whatsoever in exchange of probable good marks. The whole current system is f*cked up.

The thing is, when a teacher assesses, s/he has to take into account all the copies s/he has read. So if someone else did a better job than you it is impossible to give him/her more than the maximum. If you are given the maximum, it would be unfair towards the one who did a better job.

The subjective part must be accepted by the pupil as the originality is taken into account. Maybe the teacher expected you to write about Michael and didn't have a surprise effect.

In any case, it is extremely difficult to assess people's essays. It is the same case with a jury in front of an amateur performance.

Another thing. The reason your teacher did not give you the maximum could also mean that he/she believes that you are capable of doing even better than that. So I wouldn't worry about school marks. No one will ask you about them when you will be looking for a job later on.

The last two sentences are so very true. When I was in school, I was quite obsessive about my grades. I wanted to get A's all the time. In college, I always tried to get a 4.0 GPA (A equivalent in the States). Lol... I was quite nerdy. Once I started looking for a job, I realized I wasted too much energy on the wrong area. Instead of worrying about my grades, I should have spent more time one extracurricular activities because employers typically are not looking for a person who only knows how to do well on exam. Employers want well-rounded people.

Now, I don't even remember my college GPA.

Luckily for me I'm doing 4 extra-curricular activities at college, including Photoshop skills and learning Japanese! Thanks for making me feel better guys! *hugs*
