Finally, the BAD tour was almost over, 4.5 million people had paid to see Michael Jackson perform over the past year and a half.Michael's last date was on December 26th in Japan, where he would perform nine sold-out concerts. He would have a month off before his closing dates in Los Angeles.
"We're giving Michael his space now," Jermaine said while Michael was on the road."But after he finishes his tour, we're all going to attack him-with love." After Michael returned to the United States, however, no one in his family was able to attack him with anything. They couldn't find him. He was exhausted from his trip and did not speak to anyone.
"They think he's shy and evasive and all this,' obsevred guitarist David Williams. "No. He's just extremely scared and tired of people bugging him."
What brought Michael Jackson out of hiding in January 1989 was his sister LaToya. Michael was now thirty years old and has spent twenty years being concerned with the public's perception of him and his family. Ever since that day in 1969 when Barry Gordy and Diana Ross taught him to lie about his age, Michael had understaood the importance of public relations. He has always helped represent an image of solidarity where the Jackson family was concerned, even embarking on the Victory tour with his brothers when he truely didn't want to do so. Now LaToya, thirty-two, was threatening to shatter the family's carefully constructed image of wholesomeness with a Playboy magazine layout.
The Playboy layout was the culmination of a chain of events that had destroyed LaToya's relationship with her family.LaToya was unhappy because the albums she had thus far recorded were all poor sellers. "I want platnium albums" she complained. Hoping to appease thier daughter Joe and Katherine hired an outsider, Jack Gordon, to manage LaToya under Joe's direction. Gordon became more than laToya's business associate. Before anyone in the family knew what was happening, he and LaToya were plotting a way to extricate her from Joe and Katherine's hold.
In march 1988-just 3 days after Michael moved out of the Encino home-LaToya took off with Gordon, with just 2 suitcases, left her Mercedes in the driveway, and hasen't been back to the home since.
When Katerine heard what her daughter planned to strip for Hugh Hefner's magazine, she couldn't believe it. Neither could anyone else who knew LaToya. "Latoya was always the puritanical one." said long time friend Joyce McCrae. "She was always the one with high collared sweaters and long dresses. No one ever saw her body. She was very modest."
"I used to always cover my body from head to toe," LaToya told Playboy. "I guess it may came from growing up the way I did, being so sheltered and having a strict father."
Katherine telephoned LaToya and asked if it was true."Are you posing for a Playboy centerfold? "Please, Toya tell me it's not true," she recalled asking. "Oh mother," LaToya said "Where do you hear these things? Of course it's not true." Later LaToya explained why she lied. "Mother did ask me if I had posed for Playboy. she explained," I told her No, and that was the truth. I did pose for Playboy-but not for the centerfold."
Katherine then telepohoned Michael and, with a sigh of relief, told him that everything the family had heard about LaToya and Playboy was a lie, but by now Michael had heard otherwise. He decided to take matters into his own hands. After a few phone calls, he discovered that there would be a meeting at Hugh Hefner's mansion about the LaToya Jackson pictorial.Michael drove over there, and met with Hefner, who promised to send him the photographs by messenger later in the week, "after they've been touched up." A week later, when Michael recieved the photographs ,he got the shock of his life. " I can't believe this is my sister," he stated. "This ruins the family image. That's it. There's nothing left." Michael's employee said that all Michael cared about after seeing the pictures was his mother's high blood pressure. "I am afraid that when she sees these pictures, she'll have a heart attack for sure', he told me. "I am not even going to tell her I have them.' A month later, the layout was published. Michael's fury resulted from LaToya's claim that he actually approved of the pictures and was glad she had taken them. That was not true. "When he heard that LaToya was saying in interviews that he was the only one in the family who approved, he went nuts," said Steven Harris, an associate. "He called his mother and he said, "How can I talk to her about anything if she twists what I say for her own purposes?"he asked. He and Katherine decided it was best to stay away and not to speak to LaToya for awhile. And that's what happened, he changed his number and didn't give it to her. Michael instructed some members of his staff never to bring up the subject of LaToya's Playboy layout in his presence. "I just want to forget the whole thing ever happened."
In the summer of 1989, the family prepared themselves for more distress from LaToya, now thirty-three years old. They had heard that she decided to write a book that would be nothing like Michael's Moowalker; this one would tell the "whole truth about the family." Katherine called LaToya again, and asked if this was true. Again LaToya lied to her mother. Katherine was very hurt. This was a girl who felt her family could do no wrong, and now she was planning to write a book about just how wrong they all could be." It won't be so bad,' reasoned Katherine."What can she write about anyway."
For starters she was going to claim that her brother, Michael, had been sexually molested as a child. When word of this charge got back to Michael, he was incensed. "You got to stop her,Branca" he said. John Branca called Jack Gordon to discuss the matter, and told him that Michael did not want his sister printing that story.
"Why not?" Gordon demaned to know. "It's the truth."
"I don't know if it's true or not, Branca told him. "But I do know that if she writes that Michael was molested, he will sue her. I can guarantee you that." It is not known if there is any truth to LaToya's claim. Runors of Michael's having been sexually molested as a child had been circulating for many years within the music industry. Branca then sent a formal letter to Gordon and LaToya, advising them again of Michael's intentions to follow through with legal action against them if they continued. Gordon then called Jerome Howard, and asked for a meeting. According to Howard, Gordon offered him this deal at the meeting; if Joe and Katherine came up with $5 million, LaToya would cancel all her memoirs. Moreover, if Howard convinced them to give LaToya $5 million, he would get a cool $500,000.00 for himself.
"Man that's called blackmail" Howard said.
"No it's not," Gordon responded. "It's called business."
"Well I don't want anythng to do with it," Howard told him.I will advise katherine of your offer and have her get in touch with you." Howard then had a meeting with Katherine and advised her to have her lawyer deal with this.
Someone got in touch with Michael's people and said that Michael had better come up with some big money-millions-if he didn't want the book published.
" I'm not going to let my own sister, a person I have loved and who has known me all my life, blackmail me," Michael said. "this is as low as you can go." Then he said a funny thing. "Tell LaToya to go jump in a lake."
Indeed, for LaToya, family loyalty was a thing of the past. Jack Gordon claimed that LaToya's years in the home made her angry and bitter enough to include another aweful charge in her book proposal. He threatened that she would write about the time Joe molested her when she was eight years old. Katherine was horrified."It's not true,' she insisted to Jack Gordon.'It's just not true."
"Oh yes, it is," Gordon said."Who told you this?" Katherine said she demanded to know. "Did LaToya tell you this happened to her?"
"No. Rebbie's the one who told me," Gordon said.
By the time katherine confromnted Rebbie, she was seething. But Rebbie denied ever telling Gordon that her sister was molested by Joe.
Michael telephoned LaToya, and she recalled, "We fought about alot of things, but mostly about the book." She claimed the real reason was not the book, it was the fact that Michael "is jealous of all the exposure I'm getting. He wants to hog the limelight." None of the family ever wants to cross Michael, because he's the one with all the money," she continued," Michael cannot tell me what to write and not to write, I'll will do what I want to do." she lamented " Michael wants to ruin me."
LaToya's memoirs were rejected by G.P. Putnam's and Sons and instead signed to new American Library. As of this writting, the book still has not been published.
This is just a small piece of reality that was Michael Jackson's life after he got off stage entertaining 4.5 million people who loved him.
Now we all know what happened. And as we know Michael loved his family so much, that he has forgiven them many times. I however, will be watching to see if LaToya's book will surprisingly be fed to the media, and if she dares tries to make herself look innocent at many of Michael's Charities, she is now appearing at, after his passing.
