I'm guessing here, but that's probably due to him having Vitiligo (and being self conscious about how he looked with the white patches all over his face, etc.) and didn't want the public to see that?

I agree. In order to see him putting on make up- or getting made up- we'd have to see him without his makeup on and he just wasn't comfortable letting the whole world see him like that.
