Hi all. :) I'm not a big poster but always stop in a few times a week. I think about Michael every single day. He's taught me so much about life and love.

But I wanted to make a personal post. In 2006, my 5 year old brother drowned beneath an empty lifeguard chair. By the time a patron pulled him out of the pool, he spit up water and that same patron performed CPR. No lifeguards around, all of them froze and did not know what to do. 911 was called, and asked if a defibrillator was on site, to which a guard replied, yes, but they did not know how to use it. Connor went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance and did not have a chance. His life was cut entirely too short.

Long story short, it our mission to bring about AWARENESS to this issue, first and foremost. It is the second leading cause of death in the United States in children 14 and under and the LEADING cause in 18 states. It happens fast and silent -- not kicking, screaming and splashing like in the movies and it can happen in an instant. Over 4000 kids die EVERY year from drowning and leaves another 12,000 with permanent brain damage.

Please spread the word. With Michael being the way he was with charity, and caring so much for our world's children, I think this would be an important issue to him. And he has also taught me so much about helping others. I really want to prevent this from happening to other families... it's so preventable!!

I am so sorry for the loss of your brother.

Thank you for your initiative. Will head over to facebook, this cause deserves more attention since little children keep drowning in the most benign looking 'baby pools' without constant supervision. I put a chair next to the tub when my 4 year old started loved nothing more then hanging out in the bathtub. I have literally fished out 2 children in public pools who went under without the parent being right next to them- and that despite the lifeguards who try combing every inch by dividing the pool into visualized sections with their arm. I once passed an exam as lifeguard so the cause is dear to me, I see FAR too many children sliding of waterslides in waterparks without the parent- and a child in the water means watching like a hawk.

The ratio you described is appalling, the waterpark I lived nearby made sure that lifeguards went on often and regular breaks to prevent them from getting too tired.

Thanks, you guys. I knew I could count on you. This community has such an awesome group of people.

This is definitely my passion and I will continue to honor my brother's legacy through this. I was really really close to him, even though we were 10yrs apart (he'd have been 11 this year) and I miss him dearly. "Gone Too Soon" is my song to him although it's really hard to listen to... so I don't usually.
 
I´m sorry for your loss

My cousin was 14 months when she drowned in a water tube almost 60 years ago
She was standing on the ground leaning over the water tube.It was not much water but she was unable to rise again and that was enough for her to drown.
Her mother milked the cows, her sisters, four and six yea rs old was playing from a distance.
Maybe she could have been saved if my aunt knew how to do CPR.

It´s common at least in Sweden nowadays with a childrens pool in the garden.It´s easy to think it´s not much water in it ,I´m just going in for some seconds to fetch something but it can take longer time than you think and can be enough for a child to die.
I haven´t read about someone who has drowned at home in the garden later years but it has happened now and then.

Many lives have been saved in public pools,lakes,because there are people there who knows how to do CPR.Not only lifeguards but common people who is there just for fun. More people should learn how to do it to save more lifes.

So so sad. And the fact that you still remember 60yrs later shows something. It deeply affects families. No one should ever bury a child.

And yes, it can happen in an inch of water! I heard a story of two young twins whose mother was washing her car and they got stuck head-first in a bucket and drowned. :( Terrible terrible.

I can´t remember it because it happened years before I was born, but of course it affected the families when it happened.
