New MoFi 'Off The Wall' Master One-Step Pressing Announced

I don't think there's necessarily a different release date for the UK, I think with something as small as MoFi it's literally just the time it takes to ship to different countries.

Just listened to that review - I'm waiting on the SACD, ie not really bothered about the vinyl, but it's very interesting to note she's actually changed her favourite song from DSTYGE to GOTF based on the sound quality.

It was one date and I received an email saying it had been delayed to another, that's why I posted about it being delayed.

It's possible they just hadn't factored in shipping or whatever though, yeah.

Although I can't wait to give it a listen, one part of me is thinking "it's been 46 years, what's another week?"

With proper mastering, I'd say the same for every song on the album.
Honestly the reason I'm so excited about these releases. Whilst they won't really be widely available it will give enthusiasts a way to get a high quality master done recently. Fingers crossed they keep doing this and we get BAD next.

It'll be a convenient easier way to hear it. It'll be interesting to stack it up next to the classic original masters.

Just listened to the redbook layer of the SACD and, well, MFSL did it again.

I've compared it to the 80s Japanese CD master (gold disc, silver disc, 1987, 1988 and 1991 "ESCA" reissues are all clones) and it has a much wider soundstage with an amazing stereo separation which brings new ambience to the album imo.
In terms of mastering, it now carries a similar punch to the original LP and tracks like DSTYGE, GOTF and ICHI really shine through. ITFIL also sounds amazing. Bass and kick are much more prominent throughout. Michael's lead sounds like it has been brought back a little, blending nicely with all the instruments.

On a final note, it has the "single mixes" of RWY and GOTF, sadly.

We're all in for a great treat, folks. This is just as good as their Thriller, if not better.

I bet this uses (like Thriller) Bruce' 1999 master.
You might be wrong, mate. MFSL states it clearly that both Thriller and this new OTW release are sourced from DSD 256 digital transfers of the original analog masters.

Bruce's 1999 masters are digital. MFSL went back to the OG analog masters.

I dunno. Mofi has stated for Thriller they've used "original master tapes". And they had to admit meekly the tape's a digital to analog transfer.

Also, OTW, Thriller & Bad were never mixed for CD/digital until 1999. All previous releases were sourced from a LP master - which by its nature have different EQ'ing. Bruce was very fond of his "new" mixes.

As per their website:

Off the Wall: 1/4" / 30 IPS analog master to DSD 256 to analog console to lathe
Thriller: 1/2" / 30 IPS analog master to DSD 256 to analog console to lathe

Therefore, their sources for both reissues are digital transfers of the original studio masters done by themselves. So, analog to digital, not the other way around. It happens for obvious reasons as no one would let them mess with the analog master and work with a tape copy would be pointless since generational loss would happen. Although the DSD 256 file is analogically mastered for the vinyl, I don't think the same happens to the SACD.

How is that true if even the 1999 SACD of Thriller is just a flat transfer of the original stereo master tape?

Are you able to test the SACD layer?

Great news. Wider soundstage seems to be the consistent theme. With Thriller I'd probably say the channel separation and the bass were the highlights.

Fantastic. I'll look forward to my copy. All I'm getting so far is "Fulfillment in Process".

To my knowledge, the new masters were first used for the Special Editions (and later re-releases, T25 & Bad25).
But the SEs sound terrible, and the T25/Bad25/T40 is even worse...
