It is legaly released in the U.S., a smaller company got the rights of the Hong Kong edition and released it on the U.S. market. You can buy it at a few movie places and rent it in select movie rental stores.. It is released more so as a foriegn release, but still technically released..
For that it really minimizes the potential of a larger release if Sony wanted to.. Kinda sucks, but for the U.S. fans you can buy it..
Moonwalker is an intrigal part of the whole Bad era. It should have had an official release in the U.S.
I got the Hong Kong edition of Moonwalker on bluray. It works on all players (I personally just have a PS3 for playing blurays).Only thing is, they cut out the part where Michael says "do it and you're dead" and I love that part! So, if they did release it in the U.S. I might just buy it again if they keep it uncensored.
Yeah, I wish they would release it in the US, this time un-censored, unlike the UK version. And they should work on the colors during Man In The Mirror and Come Together. The colors look amazing during Smooth Criminal, but I swear there's a part during Man In The Mirror where his tongue looks orange, and his skin tone looks really weird. They should also add the original making of, plus new never-seen-before behind the scenes footage, for those of us who have already bought the UK version.
Originally it was planned for a US theater release. I remember reading somewhere the reason it didn't get to theaters, but I can't remember the reason! It's weird reading about stuff later as an adult about stuff when you were a kid.
I had no idea Moonwalker wasn't released theatrically in the U.S.
It came out on video at the end of the Bad era.
I mean, it was a good time to do so, but a limited theatrical run in the states would have been great.
Alls I know is I have fond memories of watching the movie on a betamax tape my parents dubbed onto over and over. I would even re-enact LEAVE ME ALONE with my stuffed animals, taking place of the roller coaster and such
They'd cover me with my toys, and I'd sit up like he does at the end. Oh embarrassing memories...
they released it on vhs instead and made way more moneyOriginally it was planned for a US theater release. I remember reading somewhere the reason it didn't get to theaters, but I can't remember the reason!
I'm talking about in 1988. It was going to be shown in theaters but it was cancelled. The estate didn't allow it

Wikipedia says this:
"The release of Moonwalker was originally scheduled to coincide with Jackson's 1987 album, Bad. During the theatrical release of Moonwalker, Jackson was also embarking on the Bad world tour, his first tour as a solo performer. The film was released theatrically in Europe and South America, but Warner Bros. canceled plans for a Christmas 1988 theatrical release in the U.S. Moonwalker was released on home video in the United States and Canada on January 10, 1989, just as the Bad tour finished. (His tour was supposed to finish sooner, but had been postponed due to some vocal strain, so it went on until the last week of January 1989.) The video had sold more than 800,000 copies in the U.S. by April 17, 1989."
