The Discussion of MJ's Unreleased Tracks

According to Bill, Price of Fame is early 1986 and the Pepsi version is 1987
recorded in January - February 1986, mixed January 3, 1987. I thought recording dates were known so I just focused on when each mix was actually done, not recorded

Who knows about groove of midnight
This one’s a mystery. Years ago, an alleged snippet of the vocal session leaked online where MJ is chatting in the recording studio. Matt Forger was looking for it for inclusion on Bad 25 but wasn’t able to find a version with MJ’s vocals; however, some years later, a tape box of Bad era cassettes went up for sale, and one of the tapes was labeled “Groove of Midnight.” It could’ve been Rod’s writers’ demo for all we know; nobody ever followed up.

My personal conspiracy theory is that Rod wouldn’t sign off on its inclusion since he was allegedly butting heads with the estate, so they either told Forger to say it didn’t exist or purposefully hid the tapes prior to archiving to give him plausible deniability.

Or maybe MJ really didn’t record it, and the leaked snippet just captured him ad-libbing the song randomly while recording a different track. Who knows?

My guess is MJ did record Groove of Midnight.

Listen to that brief snippet that leaked. At the beginning for a second, you can hear the song playing. I also doubt MJ and Rod would waste time in a studio to not record the song, even if it was just a quick vocal take. Rod was very organized. I'm sure he had the song ready for MJ to sing.

GOM is probably my holy grail that's in the vault. I understand why it didn't make BAD (not edgy enough), but Rod is very good at creating songs for MJ to sing.

I'd assume Siedah Garrett would know if there is a MJ version.

The article mentions 5 contributions from Michael. I wonder if Behind the Mask was one of those?
