Cats love to move objects that are on a table, shelf or refrigerator and then watch them fall. As veterinarian Ellen Whiteley explains, it's all about the hunting instinct.

"It tells the cat that a paperweight or trinket might turn out to be a mouse. Poking it with his paw will start a great game of fetch, possibly culminating in a nice meal," says Ellen. Once the object falls and remains lying motionless on the floor, however, the cat realizes that there's no bread or spectacle in sight and loses all interest in the item.

There is, according to Whiteley, and another explanation for minor acts of vandalism. Sometimes a cat remembers that the owner gets up and walks over to pick up the glass (or what's left of it). Having noticed this, animals often use provocation to get attention, especially when feeding time is approaching.
