This is absolutely bizarre. I have no idea what's going on with Number Ones/The Essential in Ireland. Last week, The Essential was #18. This week it is not on the top 100 at, but Number Ones is now #12 after having been missing from the charts since The Essential started climbing.

Streaming has lead to such chart manipulation it's unreal.

I posted this on 16th December 2025

What's really puzzling to me is that the Estate (or Spotify themselves, maybe?) have changed how MJ's music is streamed (here at least).

Since at least 2009, it's been Number Ones that has been the album of MJ's that has hovered around the top 100 albums here in Ireland. All of the top songs were streamed as part of that album. All of a sudden last year, Number Ones dropped off the face of the earth and The Essential has now replaced Number Ones on the chart. So something changed whereby the streams are counted towards The Essential and no longer Number Ones.

Exactly. I've been saying it all along - streaming numbers don't count for shit. They mean absolutely nothing. They're not even a reflection of what people are listening to.

It's just really open to huge manipulation from both labels and from fans.

After the release of Number Ones vinyl, they have decided to allocate the streams to Number Ones instead of Essential.

Sad, because I actually prefer The Essential.

So should we report headlines like "MJ The Essential suffers biggest weekly loss in the history of the pop chart!"?

Or should we give up on reporting this nonsense altogether?

But, what's the point of a music chart then if this is possible? This clearly shows that charts are manipulated by stream/digital allocation and not per stream itself.

But, what's the point of a music chart then if this is possible?
Exactly. That's what I've been saying for the last 100 pages or so. It suits Sony's agenda to have Number Ones visible to the public because that's what they're trying to sell this week.

This clearly shows that charts are manipulated by stream/digital allocation and not per stream itself.
Basically, as much as nobody wants to admit it, there is no such thing as an album or single any more. Both are dead, there are only songs.

But even if you wanted to pretend that we still had albums, then a stream for Billie Jean should always be counted as a stream for Thriller, and not any of the compilations.
