The Official 'Michael' Bio-Pic Thread

I peeked in the Leaving Neverland subreddit and saw them rejoicing that the public conversation seems to be leaning in favor of viewing MJ as guilty, all because there are a few popular tweets and articles painting MJ as guilty. Never mind that “Thriller” reached the top 10 last year for the first time in four decades, the Broadway show is a monumental success and is actively touring, and the biopic is set to break opening weekend records.

Those people live in an alternate reality lmao.

They are so delusional 🤪🤪
The people in the Movie subreddit thought that the movie would flop and wouldn't be a success and the result is that the film is crushing the box office at this moment.

‘MICHAEL’ CROSSED $100M THIS FRIDAY, BREAKING DOMESTIC AND GLOBAL RECORDS

In a historic milestone for the biopic genre, the long-awaited Michael Jackson film has set new records both domestically and internationally. This Friday, it became the first biopic in history to hit $100 million worldwide on its domestic opening day.
Domestically, Michael opening day delivered an even more impressive feat by earning over $40 million, the highest-grossing opening day ever for a biopic. This figure (which includes previews) eclipses the domestic opening day of every other biopic ever released.
• Oppenheimer — $33 million on its opening day in 2023;
• The Passion of the Christ — (dir. Mel Gibson): $26.6 million on its Wednesday opening day 2004;
• Straight Outta Compton (N.W.A. biopic): $24.2 million on Friday in 2015.;
• Bohemian Rhapsody — $18 million on its opening day in 2018.
Lionsgate/Universal
The strong performance highlights Michael’s ability to connect with both longtime fans of Michael Jackson and a new generation of moviegoers drawn to the larger-than-life story of one of music’s most iconic figures.

Global Box Office organization was the first one to predict it:

Remember, while legacy media and major outlets were reporting lowball industry numbers, which vastly underestimated the global impact of Michael Jackson’s career, we were the first ones to call a global opening at
$200M
+! And this is happening.

‘Michael’ Knocking Auds Off Their Feet: Biopic Nears $100M U.S. & $206M+ WW Opening, Best Post Covid For Lionsgate – Box Office Update

By Anthony D'Alessandro
SATURDAY AM: Well, it’s clear, if you want to make the box office a better place, release a Michael Jackson biopic, and make a change. Lionsgate‘s Michael twirled up a $39.5M Friday U.S. in what’s shaping up to be a $95M opening in North America, maybe even an epic $100M (which would be the second highest bow of the year behind Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s $131M). Overseas Universal is reporting from 82 territories $111.4M (excluding Korea and Japan), add it all up and we’re at $206.4M WW, which is the best opening YTD for a live-action MPA movie ahead of Project Hail Mary ($140.9M).

That first day/previews for Michael stateside as well as its opening weekend are the best Lionsgate has seen since 2015’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 ($45.5M), and far and away the best post Covid opening day and weekend the Santa Monica, CA studio has seen. Michael has easily won the dance-off between musical biopic openings, well ahead of Straight Outta Compton ($60.2M). Also, it’s the biggest opening ever for director Antoine Fuqua, far ahead of Equalizer 2 ($36M). It’s also the biggest opening for producer Graham King ahead of both World War Z ($66.4M) and Bohemian Rhapsody ($51M), as well as screenwriter John Logan, besting the 007 title Skyfall ($88.3M).

The more we learn about the movie's original vision it makes me sad, this movie was supposed to be so much more man...
But I don't get why they had to rework this lol. It would've given more depth to both LaToya and Michael. And has nothing to do with the legal issues

Toya is the sibling with the most lines, but it's like 4 lines. The brothers and sister should have had more interactions with MJ. Michael did come off as too perfect and this would've played well into the theme of his loneliness and shyness.

What upset me more was that they decided to oversimplify the story of how Michael ended up getting his first nose job. As we know, in reality, it wasn't just his father's bullying, Michael also suffered an injury during rehearsals in 1979, which is why he actually had to see a surgeon. In the movie, however, he just goes there... specifically to make his nose smaller

Out of curiosity, what exactly does he need a body double for ?
Every single lead actor has a body double, or a 'stand-in'(and oftentimes more than one) who is approximately their height, build, and complexion - to minimize the amount of time the actor themself is needed for production. Stand-ins are frequently used for lighting tests, framing shots, camera movements, and actual takes or setups where you don't see the actor's face.

For instance, while Jaafar is getting into makeup, his stand-in could be doing a dry practice run of a scene so all of the crew members(camera/boom operators, etc) can memorize and hit their spots...so the actual shooting can go as smoothly as possible once Jaafar is ready.

I'm genuinely happy for everyone here who enjoyed the film!
I have to be honest though, I really didn't like it. Like many of you I already knew quite a lot about this movie before watching it and therefore wasn't expecting anything more than a paint by numbers biopic, but even by those standards I got disappointed. Yes, the performances by Jaafar and Colman (and Juliano) are amazing. However, I also think they got way too little to work with, since both their characters are very one dimensional. Besides lacking a real story or relationships between the characters, I think my biggest complaint would be Michael's character... I genuinely don't understand how people can say that the film makes Michael Jackson feel human. He's simply portrayed as this shy genius who is perfect and I'm sorry, there's nothing human about that for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it should have been a drama or whatever, it makes sense that the film is just one big celebration, but even then, Michael was a human being and this film simply didn't reflect that in any way. It's just too flat, inconsistent, boring and rushed, (in my opinion!) Cannot give it more than a 3/10, too bad (pun intended)
