Thriller 40th Anniversary

Overtime I’ve developed the impression that Branca has no clue what’s going on outside of the legal elements with the estate. He assigns projects to staff members but isn’t very hands on. The “executive producer” credit is sort of just a technicality. Compare the general lazy sensibilities of the estate with how lightning fast they are when it comes to lawsuits and copyrights. It doesn’t make any sense to me.

Not that that’s an excuse, but I really feel like Branca isn’t intentionally sabotaging the estate; he just doesn’t pay attention and let’s middlemen run everything. Not sure what McClain does, but there needs to be a quality assurance coordinator.

Totally! The estate did not even sue the producer of LN for using copyright protected material e.g. music (videos).

Well.. Is it possible that his era will end soon? or not?

well, he is a lawyer, isn't he! So question is why does he not bring in more competent people to run the creative and technical stuff!!! Why not even bring Prince in, though Prince still needs to learn a lot, but he would (guessing) care!

Really, I think all this Branca-bashing is really over the top. Although I'm really annoyed by Thriller 40's low promotion, I still think that Branca is a really serious Estate- manager overall. And it's just wrong to suggest Michael didn't appreciate him until the end of his life. On every album, also on the last in his lifetime, Thriller 25, he expressly thanked Branca and he most important he named him as executor in his will. It was easy for Michael to give to the court a new testament if this not longer was his wish., Previous testaments automaticly would no longer last.
Nothing wrong also when Branca talks about how he met Michael. Michael also talked about it in his book Moonwalker, and I think the stories are not different.

Maybe the @mods can Branca ask if he is willing to do do a Q&A with the fans in the forum.

Why had Brenda Richie to approve the use of "We are The World". Was she involved in the song?

I am just hearing about this. Michael’s Estate, Lionel and I had to approve the use of “We Are The World”, on the AMA’s. I had no idea about the cancelation of Chris before hand.

That's a good idea. I am sure fans have lots of questions. We can check with Gaz, I have no idea if this is something Branca does or if he would even make the time.

All great points, but at the same time the lack of content, no Thriller 40 promos does raise questions about what is happening, intentionally or unintentionally. I am sure, It's mostly fun and games here, people just venting, the discussion does get carried away sometimes.

I think I enjoy Who Do You Know due to the guitar sounding similar to Wonderful Tonight.

Everything will be answered in the upcoming biopic about MJ, where he talks about John Branca's life.
ok, let's get back to Thriller 40 now. Biopic is another subject. Feel free to open separate thread to talk about it.

thriller 40's coming to a wrap imo, all songs have been accounted for on yt with new uploads/remasters apart from billie jean, which leads me to believe it'll be the send off of the thriller 40 celebration.

Shame if Billie Jean wasn't scanned in 4K, yes it was shot on 16mm film... But - 16mm was also the same format to which The Beatles: Get Back was shot on, just saying... We'll see if it comes in any way.

it will be in 4k. "i'm still standing" was on 16mm, meaning billie jean will have the same quality as it's remaster.

I dunno. This doesn’t look half as good as the MJ remasters, which I’ll assume is because it’s not truly in 4K. I’d rather deal with 2K.

I saw a MJ fan on twitter say that Billie Jean 4k is released on apple music? Is that true?

So the American music awards released a statement addressing the cancellation of Chris Brown's performance...

“Live shows change all the time, it’s the nature of this business; unfortunately, this element of the AMAs didn’t come together as we couldn’t align on the performance, to no fault of Chris Brown,”

WTAF? I honestly can't even find an opinion.

If I recall correctly, Korgnex posted that Sony was pushing for Thriller 40 but the estate had no interest, and this was kinda thrown together to appease them. Apparently the two new songs were among those considered for MICHAEL and XSCAPE, hence why they already had the clearance to show up on disc 2.

If this is accurate, it’s astonishing that Sony has more of a passion for supporting MJ than his own estate. This on top of them not wanting remixes on Bad 25 speaks volumes.
This came out lots longer than I intended, hear with me;

I've given Sony under Tommy Mottola grief for the way they promoted Invincible and how it was at odds with MJ. But the fact remains, they did want to promote it. I found it an inferior way to do so, but the intention was there. MJ going to perform wasn't a bad idea either, but it's a bigger fault of the industry at large that an artist does have to travel the whole globe. You can't expect MJ to have to do that just to stay relevant. The actual solution to that didn't really come to pass until the Pandemic a couple years ago. Virtual Tours probably, that's what MJ would've wanted to do, I think.

*Holograms*, Livestream shows, any sorts of things like that. A random daydream like that, imagine.

Regardless, my point is, Sony is not the true bad guy. I disliked what happened but they're not true villains. Not when Murray, AEG, the Casios, Chandler's, etc, are all right there. And MJ unfortunately allowed them all into his life. Sad but true fact of life, watch your associates. And regulate yourself.

it’s a shame because michael had such a great history with the amas - especially the founder dick clark, whom he had known since he was a child.

they created a special award for him in 1984 called ‘the artist of merit’. he was only 25 years old when he received it. he won a total of 7 awards during that same ceremony. this predates his historic 8 Grammy win. dick Clark wouldn’t approve of what’s happening now if he was here today

The Sony thing was just them not wanting to spend any more money promoting Invincible after funding it for years and MJ not bothering his ass to get it finished, delay after delay, hotel rooms and studios being booked for no reason because MJ didn't bother turning up. Then on top of that he told them he was leaving the label, why would they spend the amounts required to promote an artist who intended to leave and go to another label straight after?

Did they not make the money back? Have they ever made anything less than a profit with MJ involved? That's my first question.

Is MJ the only artist to delay music?

And is MJ the first artist to change labels? Did he deserve to have his entire career hijacked by Sony?

I want answers to those questions first before I consider changing my mind strongly on Sony.
