Tui's Jackson billboard touch and go - ASA
NZPA December 6, 2009, 9:17 am
A Tui billboard poking fun at Michael Jackson's death and allegations he sexually abused children has upset a nearby Dunedin primary school.
George Street Normal School complained to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) after the billboard, which said "Don't worry, MJ touched me too. Yeah right", was erected near the school's playground shortly after the singer's death in July.
Jackson was accused of molesting 13-year-old Gavin Arvizo five years ago but was cleared of the allegations.
Parents, teachers and some of the school's children had complained about the billboard.
Tui brand owner DB Breweries said the billboard never intended to trivialise the allegations. It was designed to be humorous in the normal Tui billboard "quirky and satirical style" but not offensive, the brewery said.
The ASA, while it was divided on whether the billboard breached good taste, was unanimous in its concern about placing it next to a school.
However, most children, and many people, would take the message at face value and would not be aware of the double meaning.
The ASA did not uphold the complaint but a minority of the panel believed it was inappropriate to place the billboard, with its sexual connotations, next to a primary school, and that it could cause serious offence.
