Executives from the programme's production company Talkback Thames have been in discussion with the pop star's manager Frank DeLeo in a bid to thrash out a deal.
It would see the King of Pop, who is playing a 50 date residency at the O2 arena in London from July this year to February next year, appear on the final show as a mentor to one of the three finalists and perform live singing in a duet with his contestant.

Last year's winner Alexandra Burke sung with Beyoncé and other superstar guests from other series include Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue and boy band Take That.

A programme source said: "As soon as it was confirmed ***** would be in London performing at the O2 at the same time of the X Factor final, Simon [Cowell] saw a golden opportunity. Talks are at an early stage but progressing well. Jackson's representatives are open to negotiations and Jackson himself is said to be keen on the idea.

"Simon's priority is to get bigger and bigger guests on the show each year and they certainly don't get much better than Michael Jackson. It would be a real coup for the show."

The source added: "Simon [Cowell] desperately wants this and we are pulling out all the stops to make it happen. It will be the best series of them all and there is a real buzz building about this."

Auditions for X Factor 2009 are already under way with the show beginning in late autumn.

Tens of thousands of applicants will bid to make it to the show's final, held live on ITV1 the week before Christmas. The winner receives a one million pound recording contract.

The source added: "A starring performance on the X Factor Christmas final, watched by millions of viewers, just weeks before his residency is due to end in London, will no doubt be as beneficial to Jackson as much as it would be for the X Factor."

Meanwhile, it has emerged that *****'s stage show dancers have been asked to commit to his tour for two years, sparking speculation the singer may play more than 50 dates at the O2.

Twins Maya and Nandy McClean auditioned in Los Angeles to take part in the O2 shows and said they could not sign a contract for two years because they had other commitments.

I remember the bodyguards in their book talking about something like this being in the works...X factor or American Idol. But the concept was dropped. Mostly because I think MJ wanted to keep the habit of not being overexposed in tact. Being on a talent show thing would most definitely contribute to overexposure.

BUT I often imagined what it would be like because outside of that, I think he'd be the PERFECT judge/coach on one of those shows, just due to how he treats his fellow musicians in rehearsals. How respectful but honest he is. People have this misconception that he'd be terrible because he'd be nice to everyone, but I don't think that's the case. Well...he WOULD be nice to everyone, but he will also give tips and criticism in a respectful way.

Only problem is...especially with X-factor....is if a CHILD came up on stage lolol Well THEN MJ probably wouldn't be able to be honest lol

(some kid does the worst rendition of I'll Be There EVER!) MJ: "That was wonderful, magical. Really. God bless you."
(other judges looking at MJ like )

The source is Telegraph, which is almost identical to Daily Mail. I don't buy it.

True or false Simon Cowell wanted Michael to be a guest in his show, those kind programs lack credibility and seriousness, it's most of times about the judges humiliating the contestants, their rants and fights than the actual constestants' genuine growing as performers. Michael's star power and legend is too big for those shows IMO, I don't see him being part of that kind of farce. Steven Tyler lost credibility when he accepted being an American Idol judge.

Yeah agree with you on that.
Remembering reading about how one time, Michael was angry with a produce, because he was treatig everyone on a project terribly. Now, instead of firing the guy or create a scene, Michael called the producer in to his office, and had one of his security trhrow a pie at him. Apparently, the producer behaved well after that.

How awesome is that for problemsolving?

Totally agree, but the report is just about mj being a mentor on the final show, not an x factor judge. Even so, imagining mj mentoring a talent titan like olly muirs for one show, shudders.

No it's not. The telegraph is broadsheet, no way is it in the same class as the tabloid celeb filled daily mail. The report makes perfect sense - x factor final is or was the biggest show on tv in the uk - we're talking of an audience of nearly 20m people, about 1 in 3 of the population. Cowell gets stars like paul mccartney, george michael, beyonce etc for these finals. He tried to get prince but he was too demanding, lol. Of course he wd have tried to get mj if he was in london - but mj wdn't have needed the 'exposure' - he'd have had plenty during his 02 run - but an audience reach of a third of the uk might have piqued mj's interest, hence the negotiations.

I always daydreamed about this. It would be fascinating. So you think you can dance would suit him the best though. Especially the Les Twins season.
